About the Author
Margaret Wise Brown (1910–1952), best known as the author of Goodnight Moon, wrote countless children’s books inspired by her belief that the very young are fascinated by the simple pleasures of the world around them. Among her many bestselling books are The Little Island, The Golden Egg Book, The Color Kittens, and The Sailor Dog.Alice Provensen and her husband, Martin, have illustrated more than 50 fabulous books for children, including A Visit to William Blake’s Inn, Our Animal Friends at Maple Hill Farm, and numerous Little Golden Books including The Color Kittens and Katie the Kitten. They won the Caldecott Medal for The Glorious Fight in 1984. She lives in San Clemente, California.Martin Provensen (1916–1987) and his wife, Alice, have illustrated more than 50 books for children, including An Owl and Three Pussycats, The Year at Maple Hill Farm, and numerous Little Golden Books including The Color Kittens and Katie the Kitten. Wonderful book with delightful illustrations—but WHY would the publisher delete the first page and illustration: "Blue is the door that leads into the world of the color kittens" and, even worse, the closing page - "Sing Ho! for the color of Brush! Sing Ho! for the color of Hush! Sing Ho! for the color of Brush and Hush! Sing Ho! for the color of color - Now hush!"Even without those pages, the book is a gem.
Born in 1952, I loved this book as a child and still do! I buy it for special friends and relatives. The pictures and verses are unforgettable and beautiful. I am so happy it is still available.
This book was a favorite with my 5 children. We went through two of them over the years and I do not know where it disappeared to. I know some grandchildren loved it as well and I might have sent it home with one of them. One of the grandgirls asked me how to make brown as she only had 4 crayons. I remembered what the kittens had used and told her. She was able to use those colors to make brown boots on the restaurant cowboy color sheet. I told her about the book her aunts and uncles and Momma has loved. She wanted to read it. So, I went looking for a replacement. She is in third grade but she happily left the house with their copy. I also bought one for myself. Maybe a great-grandchild will love it as well. Also as an aside note, knowing about colors may come in handy as it did with me when I took an art class in college!
We love this sweet tale of two kittens making colors! It's a gentle introduction into mixing colors as well as color names. The illustrations are beautifully done, and I haven't tired of reading it yet!
This was my favorite book to read to my children and now I am reading it to my grandchildren. The illustrations are magical and the rhyming is so entertaining and fun to read aloud. It's a great book for both the child AND the person reading it! I hope they will read it to their children~!
I didn't have the pleasure as a child personally so I purely went off the reviews. I bought this for a four-year old that I sponsor in Albania. I can translate it for her. I was squealing with delight when I read this through. The only thing more darling that the story are the illustrations. This book is absolutely adorable and completely universal worldwide. I know that my little love button is going to love these little kittens that don't know how to make green. A great way to learn colors and appreciate creative storytelling. A+ !!!
This was one of my favorite books growing up. I was so very pleased to have found it on Amazon. I included it with other items as an optional addition to baby shower gifts for my great, great nephew.
Love this book from my childhood. My grandchildren love it too.
