Review

“Harrowing . . . Salak's descriptions of the jungle passage are compelling and dreamlike.” ―The Washington Post“Keenly observed . . . As Vecera cuts her way through swamps and forests, encountering insects, snakes and the native population along the way, you'll think of the travails of Katharine Hepburn in The African Queen.” ―USA Today“There aren't many books that we hand to friends, urging, 'You have to read this.' The White Mary is one of them.” ―The Plain Dealer (Cleveland)“Salak's descriptions of the sights, sounds, and smells of the jungle, with its brutal chieftains and servile women, brings the story to life with all of its horrors and satisfactions.” ―St. Louis Post-Dispatch

The deep multi-tiered symbolism in this book had me literally mesmerized. If you're one to really, really enjoy exploring the unspoken and deeper connections between things, you'll get a lot out of this read. I kept realizing the constant symbolism---every object, every event, every setting, and of course every character were all purposely-created tools to intentionally express something deeper, a deeper truth or deeper reality. Not only in the story but in real life in general. If you're satisfied with the surface-level presentation of things in life (nothing wrong with that! Different people have different interests), it's still a thrilling adventure story and worth reading in my opinion, if not just for the book's seeming call for us to re-awaken our sense of empathy and humanity in an undeniably crucial time where empathy and taking action are profoundly needed. And doing that through an exciting, fascinating and overall well-written story? Win.I do have small hang-ups via personal opinion about how a couple parts were written (one part was a little sappy for my taste, another part was confusing and hard-to-follow, etc), but when are two human beings' minds going to line up exactly? I'm still solidly grateful for Ms. Salak's voice. Parts where I felt I may not agree with the way a place or institution is represented just inspired me to do my own research and end up educating myself more overall. Just wanted to add my criticisms atop my praises to make it a more well-rounded review. But all in all, there is so much to get out of this story. I wholly recommend.

The White Mary is the tale of a female journalist who visits most of the world's worst places - places where people are lost and hurting and human life is cheap. As we get to know the main character we discover something I have observed first hand - international war correspondents are very dysfunctional and fascinating people. The White Mary is all about loss and being lost. The only character in the book who seems to know where he is going and where he has been is Tobo, a shaman from the deep jungles. Author Kira Salak seems to have based most of settings and probably some of the characters on her own real world experiences. Marika Vecera is on a quest that (in my opinion) is never fulfilled. She is lost at the beginning of the novel and I still felt she was lost at the end of the novel. Without giving away the plot or spoilers, The White Mary contains extremely disturbing depictions of human brutality. They are as authentic as descriptions of war zones as as I have ever encountered and I am a combat veteran. The White Mary is a worthy read if you want to experience something outside the norm. I also highly recommend Googling Kira Salak.

While the writing was OK and readable, the plot jumps around a lot in time and space making it hard to follow and less than credible. I found the descriptions of the places the author wrote unconvincing - not that she hadn't personally visited these places, but I couldn't get a sense of her places from the writing. In fact, I've read other authors' accounts of entirely fictional places that were more believeable than this author's.I also found the main character's state of mind unconvincing and so her actions based on it didn't seem justified. Regardless of the final point of the book, I just couldn't make myself feel sympathetic towards her and having bought the book, I really tried to. All in all, I can't recommend this book for a purchase and really wish I had gotten it as a paperback rather than an ebook - at least that way I could get some money back reselling it.

Wow. I loved this even more than I loved Four Corners. Kira Salak is most definitely talented. I loved how she didn't just write from the point of view of the white woman traveling (which she obviously knows about) but that she also wrote from the point of view of the Papua New Guinean witch doctor. Having been to Papua New Guinea and knowing many Papua New Guineans, I really feel like she understood their traditional outlook on life. She definitely is not at all a fan of missionaries and paints them in a pretty terrible light in this book (which is kind of understandable, but still rubbed me the wrong way). I was able to get lost in this book and in the world she painted and really loved this story.

One of the best books I read. The truth in the story, look up the author after reading the provided description, so the internal journey she undergoes is more meaningful than a general story. The love story aspect of it is lovely but others will disagree with me; you have to take it in with the meaning of the other story elements and not by itself... in my opinion.

I just needed something to read. I never planned on something so epic, so full, so foreign and yet so simple. A female war reporter goes in search of a mythical male war reporter many years her senior. She must be guided through the jungles of New Guinea by Tobo. The woman's journey is not a walk in the park; it is a hack through the jungle, a slog through swamps (with leeches), and a trip through the hell we call malaria. She fights herself all the way, the other travails are minor compared with her internal strife. She comes through the fire, and into a state of grace, some of which will rub off on you, making you the better for having gone on the journey with her.

This is a very precise and well organized books. Every chapter is well justified and moreover each chapter contains relevant algorithms and psuedocode to address the problems discussed. This makes the book particularly practical and useful. Topics discussed follow each other naturally and the authors have done a great job of covering the topics conisely without going overboard.

I was a bit disappointed by this book. It is written more like a reference book than something you can read through to learn the material. It is full of various equations with little in the way of "plain english" explanations. If you are VERY comfortable with vector math and looking at lots of equations, then this book may be a good reference. If you are looking for understanding basic concepts, then you will need to look elsewhere.

If you already understand image processing and the basics of computer vision, this book is a very good at concisely presenting more advanced algorithms to the reader. Also, because this book is so well organized, you can read it from beginning to end. Rest assured if you are looking at an algorithm on page 84, you will not need to skip ahead to later sections in the book to understand it. From the beginning, algorithms are named and presented in numbered steps for clarity of presentation. The book starts out with introductory material such as basic optics and the geometry of camera models. It continues with image denoising, as well as two full chapters devoted to image features and their detection. Finally, the more basic material concludes with a chapter on the mathematics of camera calibration. One aspect of vision that is often neglected in other computer vision books that is treated well here is that of motion. For those working in video processing, this might make this book a good selection. Also, the book gives one of the best discussions of eigenspaces that I have seen in print in chapter ten of the book, where the subject is recognition of 3D objects. I was able to code up the eigenfaces face recognition algorithm based almost entirely on the information found in chapter ten of this book. If you need an introduction to computer vision before tackling the more advanced material in this text, try Shapiro's book "Computer Vision" ISBN 0130307963. A good knowledge of linear algebra is necessary prior to understanding the algorithms in this book such as is found in Schaum's outline of Matrix Operations. Given the specific subject matter of this book, it would probably be an excellent choice for an engineer or scientist that is interested in computer vision as it relates to robotics.

I didn't know or hear about this book till one fine morning when I went to our IIT library looking for some good book on computer vision to supplement the knowledge imparted by Horn's book. I found this book and it contained most of the concepts covered thus far in my lectures. Still I was not convinced about the credibility of this book. Somehow, I started grazing through this book in leisure hours. To my surprise, I found that it was simply an amazing book written so skillfully on computer vision from the basics. The Math fundae in the appendix were the ones I read first. They were very concise and helped me to grasp the concepts quickly. The chapters were also based on recent literature and very much coherent and self-explanatory.This book has the potential to become a master-piece in computer vision. One unique feature of this book is the clear explanation of Math concepts in each chapter. For it to become more user-friendly, some real application oriented problems should be added. But, on the whole, this book is an excellent book to be read along with Horn's book to fully understand the basics of computer vision. I strongly recommend this book to any novice to computer vision with little understanding of image processing concepts.

I originally purchased this book for a graduate-level computer vision course. I found the book more obfuscating than helpful. For example, Trucco and Verri's discussion of PCA/SVD, a topic I know quite a bit about, left me confused and frustrated. Unfortunately, their treatment of other topics is not any better.I have since used the book as a reference on a couple occasions. My opinion of the book has been raised only slightly since my first read, taking my rating all the way up to two stars ;). I suggest that you DO NOT waste your money on this book.

This is the best textbook for computer vision I've ever met. Compared with Forsyth and Ponce's heavy book titled with "computer vision: a modern approach", this book is very concise, precise, and suitable to be used in classes. Definitions are carefully given. Pseudocode is extremely helpful for practical use. Also some sections about mathematics are appreciated to understand the underlying algorithms. If you want to learn more or do research, then read Forsyth's book after finishing reading this book. Several my collegues think this book is the first choice for new comers in this field.

Every newcomer to the field of computer vision should own this book. With a well organized blend of theory and algorithms, this text clearly and (as important) succinctly introduces the key elements of computer vision. This text has the best introduction to epipolar geometry that I've seen. For a reference, it's very thin. However, for an introductory text, it is hard for me to imagine a much better one. I am not aware of any book that is even comparable.

It is an interesting book that can be read with easiness recommended for all the courses of artificial vision, its brings important algorithms, annotations and interesting internet addresses where one can know more about this topic. The division of the book is interesting sandal in an easy way the topic of the vision stereoscopy, connecting the different topics and allowing to the reader, with a simple but technical leguaje, to select those that more they make comfortable to its necessities.

"The engaging, digitally rendered avian characters stand out against the wintry landscape, and their many antics as they navigate their surroundings will sustain readers interest. They loop-the-loop through the falling snow, tightrope walk on branches, ski on twigs, and knock snow off fence posts. Children will readily join in the reading to supply each ending rhyme." --"School Library Journal, "September 2011"With spare verse and a quiet, winter landscape, Baker ("LMNO Peas") presents an ode to uniqueness, particularly as it pertains to nature.... This is a beautiful book. I had seen it recommended for identical twins but I think it's appropriate for any children. I'm going to enjoy reading this to my boy/girl twins over the next few years.

I bought this book for my son's first birthday and I love it! It is simple, sweet, and has beautiful illustrations and text :) I think that anyone who loves nature and appreciates good writing and art will love it too :) This is a great book for both little boys AND girls! Buy this one! :)

Such a cute story, purchased for my twin boys to help them grow with undertsanding that they may look the same but are very different from eachother.

Great book for twins and their parents. I purchased this as a gift for someone having twins and couldn't wait to read it myself. Very cute story and well illustrated pictures. Easy for a child to understand and a great reminder the parents of twins that they're not the same person.

I bought this book as a Christmas gift for my 10 month old identical twin girls. They love it and I love it! For identical twins who are "just the same" but "not quite" this book seems like it was made just for them. The pictures are really cute as well. I think this book will be a favorite in our house for quite awhile!

This book is perfect as a good night story for my twin boys. Even though they are not identical, they do need reassurance about the fact that they are not "a set of twins" but two individuals and that we love each one of them for how different they are. With this sweet story I can reassure them and at the same time, tell them a beautiful tale about winter nature.

This is a beautiful book and perfect as a holiday gift for young children! My son loves the pictures of snow with the contrast of the red birds as they fly through gorgeous wintry scenes. We liked it so much, we gave it as a gift to all my friends with children aged 0-2 years.

I bought this for my infant twins. It's super cute and I like the message and the illustration style. Though, because the red birds are the only real splashes of color in book, my boys haven't really responded that well to it (compared to how they clamber up on my lap to see other books). Maybe when they're old enough to understand the words better . . .
