This is a great book for those looking to develop an intuition around electricity and related practical applications. I come from an Ivy league background, computer science with some light EE classes. I've been tinkering in the house with electrical work, and realizing I lacked the grounding I want for understanding how things work together. I initially looked at the online courses from MIT and others. Several thousand greek letters and formulas later, I was feeling refreshed on my calculus and algebra, but no better at figuring out what the white wire does in my light switch :) I also looked at some electrician practitioner courses online, but they all seemed to start with things like "this is how you use a linesman plier", something I'm comfortable with, and way too slow for the crash course I'm interested in. This book was a nice happy medium...I also purchased a codebook explanation alongside this, that I've yet to crack the spine on.

This will most likely be THE best money you'll ever spend for a high quality refresher on basic electricity. The author, Milton Gussow, does an absolutely outstanding job covering the fundamentals with enough detail and clarity to make this a definite "go to" reference manual for the electrician, the technician, or the field engineer.Rather than listing the topics, I strongly suggest all potential buyers utilize the "Search inside this book" application. Reading through the Table of Contents will give you a good feel for the subject matter and how it is laid out. A cursory read of the those portions of text that are provided in the search application will give you a good understanding as to how the author clearly and concisely presents each subject. And, reading through the Index gives ample reference to those topics you most likely would want to look up on the spur of the moment.I highly recommend this is book!

For some reason, when I picked up David Rensin’s The Mailroom: Hollywood History from the Bottom up, I just expected it to be a book-length exhortation for the chronically un-motivated. It may have had elements of that, but it was so much more. The book focuses on the William Morris Agency’s widely imitated sink-or-swim mail-room training program for agents. For Hollywood buffs, it is a history of Hollywood (and to a lesser extent, show-business New York), not only from the “bottom up,” as billed, but from the inside out. Life lessons abound with hilarious (and sad) stories of savvy cutthroats (the mailroom boy who edges a long-serving agent’s secretary out of her job), screw-ups and hyperventilating basket cases who washed out. The special challenges faced by women and minorities in the program are sensitively addressed (with insights from one-time trainee-secretary Helen Gurley Brown, among others). The role of nepotism and connections in unmistakable (e.g., George Burns’ nephew), but interestingly it emerges that sometimes the nepotism worked out in spite of everything (George Burns’ conscientious nephew). and at other times resulted with the agency being stuck with lazy, entitled incompetents (Doris Day’s son). Dirty little secrets emerge, such as why WMA and other agencies started requiring college degrees (to avoid hiring minority applicants) in a business where street smarts, cunning, ruthlessness and what might be called “emotional intelligence” were and still are infinitely far more important than traditional “book smarts.” Hilarious tales of adolescent and 20-something males walking in on naked or scantily clad actresses) and pranks (e.g. letters with forged signatures from top agents, hired call girls posing as reporters, and even gluing Doris Day’s son, Terry Melcher’s shoes to the floor, since apparently he couldn’t be bothered to wear them) alternate with insight into the world of show-business agents and the entertainment industry in general. The most important life lessons I took away were (1) that if you want to succeed in any endeavor,. you must be willing to start at rock-bottom, however much humiliation and grunt work that inevitably entails; formal education and superficially impressive-sounding academic degrees are no substitute for grit, determination and what Rensin would term “intestinal fortitude”; and (2) oh yes, in the world of Hollywood agencies, as in most other areas of life, a-holes almost always finish first!

What made Ivy League educated young people want to slave in the mail room for ungodly hours for barely sustainable wages, be screamed at constantly, cater to the whims of some very eccentric people, make deliveries in all hours of the day and sometimes night, run demeaning errands and in their spare time, read and "cover" scripts for the powers that be? Well, for the chance to be entertainment agents, to make piles of money and hobnob with the stars. This is the story as told by the successful ones like David Geffin and Mike Orvitz about what it took and really why you had to start there. It was a postgraduate course in how to be a winner in Hollywood and New York. The book covers it all from the early days to post 2000 with entertaining vignettes based on many many interviews. This seems to have been a labor of love by the author and it shows. You will laugh at some of the antics and learn some great tips about how to get ahead in this industry and perhaps anywhere.

I love entertainment business books and this one does not disappoint. Unless you're in the biz, which I'm not, almost all of the names will be unfamiliar. This book has no story. It's a known fact that a way into the entertainment industry is to work in an agency's mailroom, eat sh*t, and hope for your break. This book is a series of interviews with the former mailroom attendees on the good, the bad, and the mental make-up of the wannabes struggling to get out of "mailroom jail". It's funny, informative, and one of those books you can't put down.Many industries have a proving ground. In investment banking we put them on as a trading or sales assistant hoping they will pick up the lingo and learn on the fly. But the agency mailroom seems to be about feeding egos of senior agent's with much more screaming, yelling and attention paid to personal chores. They do mention many of the nice agents as well as the agents who were best at teaching the mailroom guys. My favorite stories are about CAA because it is next door to my favorite hotel the Peninsula and because of the Mike Ovitz aura. Mike doesn't come off particularly well in the book but partner Ron Meyer does come off as a particularly sharp and nice guy.The positives and negatives of the mailroom run from taking your bosses stool sample in the doctor to having nude actresses answer the door. I also enjoyed the stories of the CAA mailroom which had a particularly high level of paranoia. I had met media mogul and former agent, Mike Medavoy so it was interesting seeing his son's quotes who was eventually fired due to information leaked to his father.If you have any interest in the business side of Hollywood, you'll like this book. Other books of interest would be "Wannabe" about an MBA's attempt to succeed at the low levels of Hollywood, and Lynda Obst's book "Hello, He Lied" about her journey from journalist to producer.

Good history book about days long gone. I wasn't in the scene, but good to get a sense of how old Hollywood worked. The stories of mail room workers delivering large checks to the stars, and being encouraged to listen in on all calls was interesting.

At first I wasn't impressed. This is just a bunch of name dropping, I thought. But as I got into it I came to love the stories, the variety of personalities, and the life lessons.

It becomes very repetitive. What a horrible world to live in. Interesting, nonetheless. I bought it used and got a nice copy of a hardback which I gave away after reading.

From the real men and women who started at the bottom and made it to the top and beyond. There is some backstabbing as they all aspire for the same jobs but also the camaraderie of everyone being in the bottom of the barrel trying to get out as fast as possible. Some make it and some don't. A must-read for anyone contemplating becoming a Hollywood agent.

We were living overseas and could not do all the supplements that were recommended by the author, but by following the diet plan which involved removing all possible food sources of ADD for 30 days, then slowly adding back each one bit by bit we found out what triggered my son's ADD. We could then avoid those food additives. What was amazing to me was that after we had been on the 30 day cleansing diet my son described how his brain was working better and the way he described it as a ten year old was a child's description of what the author had explained was happening. This book was literally a Godsend for us. I cannot recommend it highly enough.As a PS I would also add that if you can only add one supplement to your diet I would recommend omega-3 fatty acids. It is the critical nutritional supplement for the brain and memory.The best way to get this is with cold-pressed flax oil. Harder to get and more expensive than fish oil, but seems to work better. I personally was using it for something else and then found my own memory was tremendously better. (My son literally thought I was getting Alzheimers before I started). I put it in my morning smoothie. It should not be heated for cooking. Do not use Gingo Biloba in a child, it causes headaches and I found this out the hard way when I took some myself to help my own memory. I had been giving this to my son before I read the book because I had heard it helped with memory.

My friend really enjoyed it as they are trying to avoid drugs.

This was a gift to our vet, who has compassionately and tirelessly cared for our many pets over the years. He and his staff loved paging through it, and he took it home for his teenagers to enjoy before putting it among the reading materials in his waiting room. The charming and witty illustrations appeal to all ages, not just the little kids. It is a dear story with some great advice for us all.

Sally Goes to the Vet is just one of the delightful stories by Stephen Huneck. It is a perfect gift to keep on hand for a quick gift to a child. It is also appropriate for any child with a pet.

I used this book to do a presentation at a pre-school - the kids LOVED it. It was a great segue into demonstrating what we do in an examination room as well as their responsibilities as a pet owner. The age group was 3-5 years old and they loved the images - especially Bingo chasing Sally. I recommend this to all of my colleagues to have for visitors to their clinics and to specialty toy stores to carry as part of their library.

Stephen Huneck was a genius and it saddens me that he is no longer with us. I hope his friends and family know how much his stories have touched the lives of me and my children. Buy these books and share the joy and love of having a relationship with a pet with your children.

But like a painting with the needed elements, colors, tones, lines, shapes, something went off in the process of writing, as a painter, who moves from start to middle toward end realises that he/she went off course somewhere, needs to go back to the middle.

It had potential. The themes reflect the challenges of family life and couple dynamics. However i felt like it dragged on, being a struggle to finish. Every character had flaws, as do we all. However, the two couples weren't interesting enough for a novel. A short story would have been better.

This book was right up my alley -- or so I thought. The premise, two black couples living in London on the eve of Obama's historic election, was compelling with promises of psychological insight. But I ultimately had to abandon it. The amount of detail forced the narrative to proceed at a snail's pace and I couldn't lose myself in the story. It may be for another kind of reader but unfortunately, not for me. The title, by the way, is from the music of John Legend, whose second single provides the book's title. There is a lot of promise here but just not enough to keep me hooked.

A scary look at the ordinary lives of two couples and their struggle to love, through love and defining love. A very real portrayal of what couples experience when you hit that wall. I saw echoes of my own relationship as well as those of friends and siblings and it wasn't always pretty. In fact, it was downright scary in some instances and the alarm bells were ringing. I think the realism that Diana Evans brings to the page is what makes this novel so readable and works so well as a tale of stale domesticity.Michael and Melissa are at a crossroads in their relationship. Melissa is starting to feel as if she is taken for granted and begins to push back against the gender roles that have existed forever. Michael, is deeply tied to these roles and gives little to no thought as to how this could possibly be impacting their union.Damian and Stephanie didn't seem like a great fit from the beginning, so their struggles come less as a surprise and more as an expectation for such a poor pairing.The story and message of this novel is; love is fragile and easily broken if not tended to and cared for relentlessly and consistently. She nails the emotions, dialogue and motivations of her characters and succeeds in writing about the lives of ordinary people. There are some instances were this book veers of course, but for the most part it is a good read that stays true to its premise of ordinary people, confronting ordinary challenges. Stephanie differs from Melissa in that she relishes her identity as a mother. Whereas Damian wonders if the life he's beholden himself to is really all there is and is it enough?The story gets a bit odd towards the end with the introduction of a ghost of some kind but I don't think Evans meant to for that portion to be interpreted as magical realism. I think it was meant to serve as definitive proof of Melissa's emotional instability.There is much to discuss and turnover with each of these couples, but the overwriting and frequent tangents away from the topic at hand, takes away from the flow. For that reason alone, I nearly gave up on it altogether, so I can see where others might do so as well.That said, this is a really good story that is definitely worth the effort.

She bravely bares her soul on some of the entries of her life by featuring some of what she has overcame (I say bravely because I admit that I probably would be guilty of covering up some of the harshest events that occurred in my life if I were in her shoes such as the brave situation where she describes the dynamics between her and her late ex-husband). Conner explains what is writing down your soul and the commitment difference between writing down your soul versus journaling, creating a schedule and a sacred writing space, and much more.

Writing down your soul is one of those few books that I call a gift. A gift that came at the right time when I was exploring my soul and its purpose. I had tons of questions to ask and this book came to my rescue. I realized that I have been conversing my soul prior to that, I just didn't have a name for it except to call it automatic writing. I would pose a question and an answer came rushing down from my gut into my chest and down my arms. The voice had extraordinary wisdom, it felt like the self that is perfect, whole and complete talking to the limited and scared self. Right now, with the help of Janet's work, I am able to establish a practice of daily conversations with the voice which I refer to as my true self. My journaling begins with: Dear true amazing self and then the journey into mystery begins. I am grateful to have experienced soul writing as a spiritual practice that grounds me and allows me to realize that we are all conduit for Divine truth. All that is required of us is to show up, ask and listen.

It was yet another night of lying in bed, worrying about all sorts of things, when something told me it might be time to take a look at that book I purchased a while ago. I had no idea what to expect. I just knew I wanted to learn a little more about myself and my soul. So I started reading, and found myself moved by Janet's stories about the amazing surprises and blessings that are in store for us when we write this way. I felt a sense of peace that had become a stranger to me. I'm a seasoned journaler and I've read all the great writers on the subject -- Kathleen Adams, Christina Baldwin, Tristine Rainer -- and yes, Tristine's work is wonderful at helping us see how writing can connect us to something bigger, how patterns and meaning emerges through our lives, and how we can write our story in a way that is spiritually powerful. But nothing prepared me for Janet's work: here was someone talking matter-of-factly about the downright miracles that can happen when you connect like this, and she's the most down-to-earth person who talks about miracles you could ever meet! I knew she was right because at my most connected, most aligned, the miracles have happened for me, too. I even been working on a memoir about that for a couple years now because I thought I had so much to share with the world. This book and Janet's work is teaching me that I haven't scratched the surface. There's more. So much more. And I've experienced incredible things that most people just wouldn't believe, so that's saying something.It's the first thing to *really* speak to me in a really long time, and while I can name a handful of books that were life-changing in one way or the other (I LOVE reading), this one blows the others out of the water. The other books were inspiring, but this one is more than that: it expresses in the most concrete terms what to DO to change your life. It's a guide to that, to transformation, to how to be real, to how to listen to your intuition, to how to connect in the deepest way, to live authentically -- even how to get even more out of those other life-changing books! This book came to me highly recommended. It is so much more than what I expected. Author Janet Conner says: Show up. Open up. Listen up. & Follow up. Miracles will happen. I can attest to that.Too often, I have read books without doing the writing exercises. Not so with this one. This time I did all the writing exercises requested. I even bought the companion workbook. That’s something else I don’t usually do, thinking that a ruled notebook is sufficient. It may be, if your budget is pinching you. But the workbook offers so much more and it will continue to offer more as I return to it for the quotes, thoughts, and suggestions that will continue to inspire me even now that I have finished the book awhile ago.This time, I wanted to see if it really makes a difference; if completing the writing exercises in the book is that wee bit extra that makes a giant difference. IT DOES.Janet Conner put me in touch with my spirit guides. I’ve known for a long time that we all have spirit guides and angels that hang around us, keeping an eye on us and getting us out of trouble from time to time. I didn’t know that they were waiting around for us to actually ask them for help! What a difference that makes!Thanks to Janet, I found my guide, Timothy who said to me, “It’s about time. I get bored with nothing to do. I cannot do things for you unless you do your job of ASKING for guidance, help, and/or answers.”Whoa! I never knew that I could actually talk to my guides and get actual answers from them!There is so much more that I want to tell you about this book. So I am going to end this post and write more in the next post.A word to the wise, first; when you buy the book be prepared to write on the pages! Yes, this is something else I never allowed myself to do. I’ll be returning to this book over and over again. My writing in the margins, underlining, drawing little attention-getting icons and doodles, are an important part of the education of me, Arlene. WOW!

If you enjoy mystery, pain, love and murder, read this book. I confess I read by author and she is one of my favs, but this story just got under my skin. I felt sad, unsettled and confused almost simultaneously and I could not put this book down until I finished the entire book!!!

Typically I love Tami Hoag books. This one was different. Characters were so flawed they were difficult to like and want to continue to read about. In general this was a depressing book. I would not buy one with these characters again.

Ms. Hoag makes the Louisiana back country real in both a romantic and terrifying way. A child is sexually molested, another child is murdered in a small town on the edge of the swamp. Are these crimes connected? Sheriff's detective Annie Boussard and her hot blooded Cajun husband, who is also her boss, must try to find the suspect(s) when very few of any clues exist. This mail biting, page turning novel will keep you reading late into the night.

I waited over a year for this book to come on my kindle and was not disappointed. I reread "A Thin Red Line" to make sure I remembered the characters. I really loved the story line even though it was emotional. Can't go too much into the story because one wrong step and you ruin the plot for others. It was a fantastic book and maybe next book she will get Chas a permanent girl friend.

I had a difficult time staying with this book and skipped more than a few pages. Nick Fourcade is a bully and disguising it under the premise of being "right" doesn't change the facts. I am also not a fan of the squabbling relationship dynamics between Nick and Annie. I found the story more depressing than entertaining.

Tami Hoag is an amazing author. This is the 4th book I had read by her, and I was not disappointed. To make things even better, she has set the book in and around south Louisiana, my home. I also love the depth of her characterization. I felt like I could feel what Annie and Nick were feeling. Mrs. Hoag was certainly right when she pointed out the injustices that often occur in law enforcement and in public opinion. Because she gets us into the main characters' heads so well, it is easy to see how even good people can do evil things. I truly didn't figure out who killed the victims until about 30 pages before it ended.the end. The problem with reading a book this well written and compelling is that it is a hard act to follow. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could read next? By the way, if you have not read the three books in her Secrets From the Grave series. do it! They are unbelievably good.

I am a huge Tami Hoag fan. I have been eagerly waiting for this book, as it's taken much longer for her to publish it since her last novel. As I began, I was excited that she was returning to the Louisiana Bayou, an area where she has based some of her best work. This novel deals with the murders of two children, and this made it very difficult for me to read. As always, her details are brilliant, and I love the way she writes. Unlike many authors, Ms. Hoag will present several characters as possible suspects, and I am never sure who the guilty person might be until the end. However, she is always fair to the reader - it will be one of the suspects that she has given. I am furious when an author suddenly gives a "surprise" perpetrator of the crime at the end of the story. Ms. Hoag never does that. Hopefully, she will not take as long between books as she did with this novel. She is my favorite fiction writer!

I just finished reading "The Boy." There is no end to the amount of twists, and the author is adept at misleading her readers into suspecting who the killer is. That's precisely why I liked this book so much! We are first introduced to a troubled young single mother, Genevieve Gauthier, who is fleeing from her rented ramshackle of a home where her only son was brutally murdered. Then shortly thereafter, Nick Fourcade visits the crime scene, only to immediately conflict with Keith Kemp, who he thinks is an incompetent CSI officer. In her delightfully complex ensemble of characters, it turns out that Kemp has a checkered past, having gone from a veteran cop to a CSI examiner. Also, having followed the new sheriff, Kelvin Dutrow, from a previous town, Houma, into Bayou Breaux arising suspicion in Detective Fourcade. Tami Hoag lets the reader view the family lives of Nick and Annie, a married couple who are both detectives (Nick being her boss). Dutrow lives with his fiancee, Sharon Spencer, with her troubled child, Cameron. Inner conflicts occur. There is the unsolved case of the Theriot girl, which Nick constantly gets hounded over. There is the Florette family, with Nora, a 12-year-old who was supposed to baby sit for KJ, the murder victim, but is embroiled with her bully brother, Dean Florette, who also bullies the troubled Cameron. Cameron Spicer turns out to be a character that the reader will focus on. The author's attention to detail and setting is keen. The spirit of life in the bayou is nicely captured. The ending of this book begets tragedy in the wake of violence. Don't miss this read!

About the Author Batt Johnson is an Argentine tango dancer and college professor who has worked as a communication consultant, award-winning actor, award-winning music radio DJ/producer and writer. He wrote a monthly column for ReporTango magazine and is the author of three published books on subjects ranging from acting and public speaking to jazz. This is an interesting book that deals with many aspects of argentine tango dancing with the aim of giving the reader insight into the biomechnical, emotional and musical part of this great dance. The author is a very nice person and his enthusiasm for the dance and for improving his dancing qualities is inspiring. The book is intended to help others to improve the quality of their dance. The prose is easy to read. However, for a more experienced dancer, the book is not relevant as it covers too many topics without going into depth in any of them. The general advice that has been repeated ted throughout the book is that to improve the quality of one's dance, one needs to practice and to develop an understanding of tango music, which is obvious. There interviews with very well known great dancers and teachers, but unfortunately, the conversations were superficial and in many cases without a clear focus. The book suffers from repetition and requires editing.

Batt Johnson is a long time tango dancer, professor of public speaking, communication consultant, media and speech coach, award-winning actor and veteran radio and TV broadcaster in NYC. He has written a book that is one of a kind as he is. Batt Johnson's radiant personality is reflected in this book as well as his enthusiasm, dedication, respect and desire to spread the joy of Argentine tango dancing. This book is a manifestation of his love for this dance. He desires the preservation of it and to assist in the growth of new dancers. He pays homage to the many professionals in the past and present who dedicate their lives everyday to teaching tango or creating tango music. I really enjoyed this book. I've read just about every book about tango in English, and this is one of the better ones. It has a very conversational style with Batt telling stories and opinions based on his years in the New York tango scene and his tremendously varied background in the Art and media. I'm a fairly experienced tango dancer myself and it was really interest to get his perspective on many things I thought about myself, like what makes a quality tango teacher or how the dance relates to the music. It also has nice interviews with many well-known tango dancers in the New York area. I had a couple chance meetings with Batt at milongas (tango dance events) on a recent trip to New York, and his friendly outgoing personalty in real life shows up in every page of this book.

The MOST comprehensive book on everything tango-related! Written with so much love and appreciation for the dance and its music that it will definitely inspire you to dance more and/or to learn more about both, while often making you laugh out loud! I definitely had a few “been there, experienced that” moments, making tango relatable and lovable in a completely new way. This book made me fall in love with tango all over again!

A great and comprehensive book covering numerous aspects of Argentine tango. The best part is surely the interviews! On the down side, the book is repetitive at times and could use some watering down; there are also some issues with proofreading. But I guess this is just my linguistic background speaking.

Eventually all those perspectives coalesce into a three dimensional understanding of the form within each individual. Each teacher highlights a different section of the three dimensional form when they teach. It’s up to the student to bring all those ideas together inside of themselves, along with their own understanding, to form their dance. This book has many tidbits and tales from tango teachers all over the world, as well as a lot of advice. It will be extremely useful for tango students to get some of this three dimensional understanding for their tango, as well as being highly amusing, fun, entertaining, and informative!

Christopher Bartlett's interest in flying started at school where he was an Air Cadet and a member of the British Interplanetary Society, at a time when believing in space flight seemed crazy to many. He completed his then obligatory two years' military service in the British Royal Air Force.After taking a degree in Modern Chinese and Japanese at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London University, he became, among other things, a professional translator of Japanese scientific and technical material. This included Japanese rocket tests. He also wrote for magazines in the Far East.His fluency and understanding of English, French, and Japanese coupled with his extensive travels in Europe, the USA, and the Far East have enabled him to see air travel and aviation from many perspectives. His book Air Crashes and Miracle Landings is a classic, retelling and explaining some sixty incidents that have helped make flying so unbelievably safe today. The present book, PLANE CLEVER, evolved in part from his Flying Dictionary intended to explain the technical terms in that book.
