I opened the box and immediately noticed that this is a -much- smaller book than the Panther edition. The reason? It's about command line Unix, nothing else. This is described as "we've come back to the Unix roots" and that this is consistent with other O'Reilly titles like "Linux in a Nutshell". Perhaps, but titling a book "Tiger in a Nutshell" and discussing only Unix terminal commands is misleading at best, especially since this is a major departure from previous editions. This isn't a bad unix command reference and it is specialized for the BSD Unix of Tiger. Just don't expect it to be more than that.If you're looking for a book that covers Tiger -and- the unix commands in a lot of technical depth, you may want to look at "Mac OS X Tiger Unleashed". That isn't in any sense a nutshell book (it's huge) but it has all the material that this book doesn't.

I am starting on MAC, I know Operating systems in general, but this is very concise and complete for my needs

Yes, this is a command-line centric book - because that's where all the POWER is (the graphical user interface is well designed and hardly needs a reference). This book provides a great OS X-specific reference - so you won't have to test all the commands in your "UNIX in a Nutshell" book to see which ones work. Aside from the command line, this book provides important information on Managing Mac OS X (See PART THREE, below) and an excellent index for finding your information. The sections (and approximate page count) in this book are:PART ONE - Commands and ShellsIntroduction - 3 pagesUnix Command Reference - 251 pagesUsing the Terminal - 13 pagesShell Overview - 3 pagesbash: The Bourne-Again Shell - 10 pagesPART TWO - Text Editing and ProcessingPattern Matching - 3 pagesThe Vi Editor - 34 pagesThe Emacs Editor - 12 pagesPART THREE - Managing Mac OS XFilesystem Overview - 15 pagesDirectory Services - 15 pagesRunning Network Services - 10 pagesThe X Window System - 11 pagesThe Defaults System - 3 pagesINDEX

To be clear, this is a Unix reference. The commands are defined in enough detail to understand and use them easily. It also includes information on command line utilities that are installed with the Xcode Tools. A number of the common UI functions in Tiger have command line equivalents, like Software Update, NetInfo Manager, Grab (screencapture) or Spotlight, so you can create pretty powerful shell scripts. The rest of the information is covered with less detail (i.e. vi, emacs, regular expressions, X11, etc). The chapters on bash, vi and emacs, for example, are ok - but I'm not sure who would use them. If you're coming from a Unix or Linux background, you probably already know this stuff as the info is pretty basic. If you're coming from Windows, I'd recommend other, more detailed, books for learning bash, vi, emacs, etc.I like the detail on the metadata (aka Spotlight) commands. I also found a couple fun commands I hadn't used before, for example "say". Now you can have your shell script announce "Dude, I'm done!" on completion. I will be using this book for the Unix command reference and probably not much else, so it works for me.

Before you go buying this book expecting it to be about Mac OS X with lots of pictures and descriptions about iTunes and the like, if that's what you are looking for this book is NOT for you. If you are looking for a reference on UNIX commands and how to use the Terminal mode on the Mac with OS X 10.4 then you are in the right place. Chock full of more than 500 pages, I really like the way that this book is laid out. Not too long, not too short, this reference lays out all the relevant UNIX commands that you would find useful on the Mac and provides short descriptions of how each command should be used. There is some discussion on the xWindows system and Network Services, but this is mainly a reference on UNIX commands and all the keyboard shortcuts available in emacs.A very nice reference for Max OS X users who use the Terminal on a daily basis. If you are a UNIX expert you probably won't get a lot out of this book, but if you do use the UNIX side of things on the Mac it's probably worth the purchase to add to your library.***** RECOMMENDED

Noah's Curse: The Biblical Justification of American Slavery (Religion in America)

Review

"Well-researched, interdisciplinary, and strongly moral Historians of American religion, race relations, or slavery, as well as theologians interested in the interplay between the Bible, culture, and social problems, will find this book as excellent resource."-- The Journal of Religion"Noah's Curse must be recognized as the most innovative and enlightening study of the Biblical defense of American slavery ever published. The dubious legend of Noah, as Stephen R. Haynes points out, is still with us, along with the Confederate symbols flying over public places and fundamentalists denouncing racial mixing. The Southern mind, he brilliantly explains, has woven the conventions of honor, the burdens of shame, the practice of race subordination, and the concept of divine grace into a single cultural fabric. In the field of religious and sectional history, this work will take an honored place next to the studies of Eugene Genovese and Donald Mathews. No one interested in American religious history can ignore this intellectually powerful study."--Bertram Wyatt-Brown, University of Florida; Author of Southern Honor and The Shaping of Southern Culture"The ancient rabbis suggested that every biblical text has seventy legitimate meanings (and no doubt an infinite number of illegitimate ones). Stephen Haynes has produced an amazing history of interpretation of the Ham and Nimrod narratives. It becomes clear through his careful research that such texts are supple and vulnerable to misguided theological passion. This book lets us reflect on old mistakes and, by inference, invites us to reflect on our own availability for parallel misreadings. Noah's Curse is an exercise in historical disclosure not to be missed by those who care about the crisis of reading in the church and in a Bible-rooted culture."--Walter Brueggemann, Professor of Old Testament, Columbia Theological Seminary; Author of Spirituality of the Psalms>"Haynes's study provides a thorough and rich sense of the interpretive history of the scriptural story"--Christian Century

Fundamental to anyone studying the Antebellum South and American religious history. This is an outstanding and thoroughly sourced work.

I would re-subtitle the book the Genesis Justification of Slavery. From a biblical approach he narrowly looked at the historical and theological traditions of Genesis' interpretation. Of this scholarship it was magnificent, but if one names the book "Biblical justification of slavery" I would expect it to cover more than just Genesis. He does not approach the issue of slavery from a systematic theology perspective at all.

The Old Testament has never been of much interest to me either theological or literary. Perhaps being able to read this book is one reason I rate it with four stars. There are faults with this work, not the least of which is the author's over use of quotations. He points out many interesting writers on the subject, but comes short in discussing the varied views they represent. He does offer the point that Noah's curse on his son has a place in the proslavery literature in America. He presents us with many quotations of many authors without informing us of the acceptance or rejection of these beliefs by the layity. One of the most interesting people he presents is Josiah Priest, "a New Yorker known for his frontier adventure stories, Indian captivity narratives, and `true' tales of the Revolutionary War. [page 42]...whose Slavery as It Relates to the Negro or African Race (1843) was widely read before the Civil War [page 69]." The statement of Priest's position in the authorities of the slavery movement tkes the author 47 pages. For someone unacquainted with Josiah Priest this is a long delay. ( This very influential book is available in a reprint from Amazon.) Bishop John Hopkins of Vermont is also cited on page 75 but the author again neglects to place him in perspective of the 19th century crisis. The modern scholar Bertram Wyatt Brown is cited by the author 10 times in relation to part sSouthern honor played in the interpretation of Noah's curse. He should have spent more time on contemporary authors if he wanted to show the place of this scripture in the 1800's.Benjamin M. Palmer, a 19th century cleric, ranks very high with the author; Palmer is considered from page 125 to 174. Perhaps my problem with this book is that the author tries to make a book out of the handling of Noah's curse on Ham and the tenuous connection of it with American slavery. If you are interested in the curse itself or in Noah or the Old Testament then you will rpbably enjoy this book.If I were not interested in the place of religion in the justification of slavery I would not have bought it. Upon reflection I can't say it was a good buy. Personal prejudice creeps in here. I don not believe that Noah ever existed, that there was ever a curse on poor Ham because he had sex with his mother, or that it would make any difference it this all took place. I am more interested in the effect these writings had on the populace of the time. If the reader's main interest is in the life of Noah or Ham this is probable a good buy.

It was required reading.

Although Dr. Haynes, a religion professor at Memphis' Rhodes College sent me this book, as part of his self explanation for the more recent LAST SEGREGATED HOUR, (OXFORD 20120) I didn't really study it until the more recent book came out, and I highly recommend NOAH'S CURSE as a key component of comprehending this young scholar's serious commitment to comprehending the incomprehensible - organized and systematic color race prejudice within his own Christian denomination, (and in the larger Christian community), for he is an ordained Presbyterian minister. For me, his recent FACEBOOK page about the LAST Seg Hour, shows a photo of young people, black and white, lined up around a fortress like front of Memphis' 2nd Presbyterian Church where we stood for many weeks and my guess is the photo came only from the black press, as the activities remained "INVISIBLE" in the 'white press' of Mamphis for many, many weeks, reflecting the power and the propensity of white folk to ignore any challenge, however logical or VIVID, as my old Southwestern English prof would say, to their their false image of their own superiority, moral, spiritual, financial, intellectual, and well, you name it. A kind of ever willing 'superiority' that rings down thru the ages of American culture. The book is all the more interesting, as it surveys not only the leading Presbyterion pastor, (and Southwester.Rhodes founder) Palmer from New Orleans, in two great chapters, one devoted to his sermons in defense of slavery, but another to his sermons in defense of segregation. Haynes puts this in context even of medieval thinkers on this particular story, and frankly, even though as a lawyer I realized in the last decade the BIBLE,or Sunday school materials, are the only PRINT most folk read, once they leave high school or college, it still is stunning that such a ambiguous ancient story about Jewish tribes thousands of years ago should have so much power into the 20th and 21st Century. Perhaps the editors of the journal NARRATIVE should take note and do one of their special editions on it, as to this reader it has literary, psychological and philosophical implications not yet pondered. (Or perhaps in Not Seeing, as in Nazi - ing, such avoidance has beendemonatrated, yet still not ordinarily taken account of. Howard Romaine

I liked this book overall. It's an interesting bit of analysis on the issue. The author is a religious scholar, though, not a political historian. The analysis is very good, but there's not a great deal of discussion about how the South used the "curse" to justify slavery. That information is there, just not in as great a depth as possible. A nice addition to the study of religion and slavery, however.
