George Dombek has taught architecture and art at universities in Arkansas, Ohio, Florida, Saudi Arabia, and Italy. His work has been included in over eight hundred museum, corporate, and private collections and exhibited in more than 150 shows.Henry Adams is professor of American art at Case Western Reserve University. He is the author of more than a dozen books.Laura M. Terry is professor of architecture at the Fay Jones School of Architecture at the University of Arkansas. She is also a painter and has exhibited her work in Savannah, Atlanta, Minneapolis, Los Angeles, and New York.Louis A. Zona was born and raised in New Castle, Pennsylvania, and attended Youngstown State University, the University of Pittsburgh, and Carnegie Mellon University, from which he received a doctorate in 1973. He joined the Youngstown State faculty in 1971 and became the executive director of the Butler Institute of American Art in 1981. It's a beautiful book. I search the rural countryside for abandoned homesites for structures that survived wind and weather for decades. I've photographed such for many years. This is my reason for the purchase of this particular book, I'm always "hungry" for more than I have seen. Perhaps I expected too much from this book. I did not find the diverse selection of images that was anticipated.

This book documents the courage with which they fought back against overwhelming odds to report these crimes and receive legal justice and the ongoing failure of state and federal powers to take steps. The bus boycott was organized and led by women against a system where bus drivers were free to beat them and sexually harass them. Many were beaten and raped and lost their jobs but in the face of death did not give up. The crimes detailed here are horrid to read but the courage of the women and men who protested should not be forgotten. The book has a lot of footnotes and a long bibliography for those who want to read more and she has interviewed many who took part. Others have pointed that Rosa Parks was an active freedom fighter and that other women had been protesting bus unequal practices. It is well written and very readable. Mike Ditka football player who just stated there has been no oppression in 100 yrs should be forced to read this. If he is going to make stupid statements he should know his facts.

There is so much important information in this book, sometimes it actually feels overwhelming and frustrating at the same time because it really should be common knowledge.I initially got this one from the library, but I bought a copy for myself as I feel like I only scratched the surface by reading it once and need to be able to refer back to it again and again. Can we add this book to the curriculum please? My kids will be asked to read it as soon as they are old enough to.

This was an excellent book. I read it for a Women's Studies course and am so glad I did. It is a hard read at times due to the subject matter and I got chills over and over with every page I turned. This is a dense read so full of information, facts, and, the best part in my opinion, stories that hit you straight in your emotions (I am not ashamed to admit I got a little teary eyed at times). The Civil Rights Movement in the US is definitely taken for granted and has been whittled down to little bites of history where MLK Jr. is glorified and positioned as the center piece but if you read this book you'll learn there was so so much more to it and that once again history bears its burden on the backs of so many brave black women.

If you thought that the Civil Rights Movement began in the 1950's or 1960's, that Rosa Parks was a reticent old woman with tired feet, that the movement started suddenly after her refusal to move from her seat on a bus, I urge you to read this. You'll learn:- that Rosa Parks was raised a Garveyite, and had been an activist and NAACP leader for more than 20 years when she famously refused to move from her seat,- that this very seat was located on a bus whose driver had (less famously) harassed Ms. Parks 10 years before, and that she also knew E.D. Nixon was searching for a victim of racial violence who was "beyond reproach" to gain national media attention,and SO much more!I should add that I usually find history books a little boring, but this was very readable...

Seriously. Out of all of the history books that i read in high school and in the libraries, this was the only one that actually CLICKED for me. The rampant rape of black women throughout slavery and the Jim Crow Era has always been ignored or quickly dismissed in historical books before but this great author made sure to NOT do that! I love her for that! This book needs to be made into a movie one day! This will be the first time where our stories will be told thoroughly.I watched The Help, and it failed to mention the sexual assaults and rapes that the black women suffered. Although i enjoyed the movie somewhat, i was still disappointed because they refused to let our REAL stories get told. You can't have a good story set in the Jim Crow era without telling the rampant rapes of black women by white men and other men. It's part of our history. Whether many people want to admit it or not!

This book tells the nitty gritty of taking care of all types of people in the ER. It covers a few cases, but the gist is to relate how the ERs are places that attempt to take care of every type of individual front he most outrageous to those who are thankful. Although a small sample of cases are told here and in other books she has written, it is a real life experience and makes one appreciate the work that goes into having to care for individuals that most of us would rather not encounter. Nurses and doctors are in the fight for our lives and to have to deal with those who waste their time and seek selfishly to not care for others can be heartbreaking, but this book and her others which tell the real life of the ER is to be commended for bringing us closer to the fact the the preciousness of each life is good regardless of who come sin the doors.

All I can say is that Kerry Hamm writes the funniest ER stories I have ever read. And we all know that sometimes it is hard to find anything humorous about an ER, or a hospital, or a Dr.'s office, etc. I'm not sure what caused me to buy a medical humor book, but am glad I did and have since read all her books and will be watching for more. I've read others but she is by far the best!

Brief, real stories from the ER. I'm so glad I don't have that job. And more glad I'm not most of the patients she talks about..if not all of them. When I need a little brief escape from my life, and a need to feel gratitude for the problems I have, I read any of Kerry Hamm's books. You just cannot make this stuff up. Someone should make a TV show out of this.

Another great book from author Kerry Hamm. I have read and own all of her books. I am looking forward to bigger and better things from her in the future.

I love the way she writes, don't usually laugh at stories but these are written honestly with great wit and sarcasm. I can't wait to read all her books.

They are an integral part of our existence which manifest themselves in different guises, based upon the prevailing culture of the percipients.In order to fully appreciate this rather scholarly work (although it is not stuffy and dry), it would be beneficial for the reader to have a good, basic handle on the works of Jung, John Keel (who believed UFOs and other enigmatic visions were 'ultraterrestrials' or 'elementals'), the works of Dr. Jacques Vallee ( including his books 'Passport to Magonia' and most all, 'Dimentions'), Christian doctrine, Greek mythology and perhaps cultural anthropology. If armed with such a background, the work makes a lot of sense, and gives the reader much to contemplate. If this is so, then why are there so many images from antiquity (paintings, cave drawings, coins, etc.) that show what appear to be, when seen by modern eyes, UFOs? Such objects would have no meaning to people in early history, so they became 'flaming shields' and so on.Within the context of Mr. Harpur's work, the points raised above flow from the 'rational ego' holding dominance. While this may be the case, it is an unavoidable aspect of the human condition.For those with a truly open mind, the book can provide a fascinating perspective, quite far apart from the usual theories. I found that after reading the book, I felt a near compulsion to revisit the early works (1940s and 50s) of Meade Layne. His notion of what he called 'etherians', or higher intelligences existing in higher vibrational 'planes', able to slip into and out of our word by changing their rate of vibration from denser to less dense, becomes more compelling as a model.While I do not feel the author has solved these mysteries, I can't emphatically say he is wrong. I can, however, emphatically state that this is an important work, well worth reading. You may agree or disagree, but it will make you think.

Harpur has written a masterpiece. If you have always been baffled by UFOs and such matters, Harpur gives a wonderful guide and explanation about these phenomena. The book is well researched and full of example encounters, which are explained in terms of his Platonic world of Imagination. I think this is the best book I have read on the subject of Blake's Imagination, Jung's Collective Unconscious, the Platonic Realm, UFOs, Folklore and other such matters, and I have read many such books on the subject.

This book is absolutely full of interesting metaphysical, weird, and fascinating tales, theories, and history. You will come away from each chapter both entertained and wondering. You will question reality, and perhaps question your own mind. What are these strange creatures mankind has encountered for ages? What are these sightings, abductions, manifestations, hauntings, etc. that have gone on for millenia? Is it possible that all these things are related? Fairies and bigfoot and poltergeists and ghosts and demons and djinn and aliens and bigfoot? Is this world suffused with a daimonic reality that we have to come to terms with?Whether you believe in any part of these phenomena or not, the book is greatly entertaining. Definitely worth a BUY if you have any interest in these subjects. Great writing. Great ideas. I've studied philosophy, comparative religion, psychology, spiritualism, metaphysics, the paranormal, myth, mysticism, cryptozoology, ufology, et al for decades and have actually come to the same conclusions Harpur has. Well, I guess if you throw enough cottage cheese against a wall some of it might stick I got bombarded with so many tribal names and places without pause for the addition of detail that I nearly gave up the read. Years ago I read THE GOLDEN HORDE by Harold Lamb which turned out to be a great experience, sort of a pleasant stroll through the vast steppes of central Asia and beyond, the thunder of hoof beats, the war cries, the whizzing arrows, the screams , the blood: it was all there. Kennedy's book, however turns the stroll into a head long tumble in to confusion. Enough said.

I'm an english/history high school teacher, teaching abroad in South America, and I have a few students who could have written this much better than the author. Hate the writing style. It was distracting. I bought this book hoping it would be good for my students but it's a definite NO!
