Review
“Mark Tennis is without a doubt the ‘go to’ authority on high school football in California. This book brings to life the storied history of CIF football with some of the greatest athletes the sport has ever seen. An enjoyable read which includes not just the history of the game, but most importantly the people who made the game what it is today.” --Roger Blake, Executive Director of the California Interscholastic Federation “This was a great read, and there is no one more qualified to write a book about the history of California football than Mark Tennis. If you're a stat geek like myself, you'll love the records and top 20 lists of the greatest players in state history. The backstories of California legends like Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, and John Elway is worth the read alone and no one has more knowledge of the greatest program and coach in state history, the De La Salle Spartans and their legendary head coach Bob Ladouceur.” --Greg Biggins, National Recruiting Analyst for 247Sports “High School Football in California offers insight and intrigue into the history of the sport in the Golden State, from great players to prolific teams to memorable games. It doesn't matter if you are young or old, the stories will get you thinking and debating and reveal how important high school sports has been in the state.” -- Eric Sondheimer, high school sports editor, Los Angeles Times “If you like sports history, this is a must-read book. There are so many interesting facts and stories I didn't know prior to reading. I have known Mark Tennis for 39 years. He is the consummate expert and historian of all high school sports, especially California. It's perfect for your personal library.” --Bob Ladouceur, head coach of seven-time national champion De La Salle (Concord)

Happy to be the first to review “High School Football in California†( feeling honored). Though I’m not an avid sports fan, I do enjoy football a great deal. Being from California, I can remember many of the teams and historic rivalries that used to be highlighted on the local news channels. I really appreciate the way this book has been thoughtfully organized: the rankings and statistics included toward the back, are easy to use references. The stories are very entertaining, and you don’t have to be a sports nut (which I’m not) to be engaged. I was recounting some aspects of this read to my father, who’s in his seventies. After his retirement, he and some buddies would go to his former high school and watch the football games. This book sparked a lively conversation and reminiscing about old grid iron days. He hasn’t shown that much spark in years. There’s something about the purity of athleticism in high school sports that is celebrated and preserved in this text. Perhaps the modern day football experience has evolved into a glossy, though less vibrant version of its former self. Perhaps its gotten to complicated, or sullied by celebrity. But there’s something about thinking back to the times when these athletes were just kids, playing a game they loved. These kids were our friends, our classmates, we knew them, helped them with their homework, watched them grow, and maybe they never made it to the NFL, but the effort and heart they put into their play should be remembered. This book will make sure they will be.
About 43 years ago, when I was the Prep Sports Editor at The Sacramento Bee, I received a one page hand-written letter, which included a list of “unverified†California high school football records. The writer signed his name as N. Tennis, Cal-High Sports.I was curious records and contacted Doug Huff in Wheeling, WV., the leading high school sports guru at the time regarding the letter and statistics. He verified most of the information, which intrigued me even more. With only a San Francisco address and no phone number on the letter, I had a hard time reaching Nelson Tennis. He was hesitant to do a phone interview for a story, but he finally relented…and Cal-Hi Sports was born. Where did Nelson find all the records? He scoured the newspapers at the UC Berkeley and San Francisco libraries almost every weekend searching for more records and information. Talk about dedication. For the next few years, me and my predecessor, continued to receive weekly hand-written updates, sometimes on 4x6 postcards, and use Nelson’s information where pertinent. Mark Tennis started working with his uncle his senior year of high school in the mid-70s and has taken Cal-Hi Sports to what it is today; the premier high school sports recording enterprise in California, if not the nation. His book on High School Football In California was way over due.The book is full of not only statistics, but wonderful stories about the schools, athletes and those individuals who have helped make California one of the best football states in the nation. The book appropriately concludes with the touching story of Charlie Wedemeyer and his courage to coach at Los Gatos High School, despite suffering from ALS. The story will bring tears to your eyes.I hope Mark writes a sequel…I’m sure there are many more stories to tell.(Side note to Mark: According to CIF Sac-Joaquin Section records, Valley Christian Academy in Roseville, enrollment 107, was the smallest school in California to still be playing 11-man football until this year when Stone Ridge Christian of Merced announced it’s enrollment at 103. All of the very small schools in the North Section have switched to 8-man football).Ben Bodding, Sacramento Bee Sports 1969-1977.
Being a Class of 1972 Carson Colts, glad the 1971 team was in this book. Loved the stories and enjoy the history of the CA High School football. Mark Tennis I bet could write volumes of other stories that didn't make the book. Thank you for writing this book. Walt Go Colts
