“Harrowing . . . Salak's descriptions of the jungle passage are compelling and dreamlike.†―The Washington Post“Keenly observed . . . As Vecera cuts her way through swamps and forests, encountering insects, snakes and the native population along the way, you'll think of the travails of Katharine Hepburn in The African Queen.†―USA Today“There aren't many books that we hand to friends, urging, 'You have to read this.' The White Mary is one of them.†―The Plain Dealer (Cleveland)“Salak's descriptions of the sights, sounds, and smells of the jungle, with its brutal chieftains and servile women, brings the story to life with all of its horrors and satisfactions.†―St. Louis Post-Dispatch

The deep multi-tiered symbolism in this book had me literally mesmerized. If you're one to really, really enjoy exploring the unspoken and deeper connections between things, you'll get a lot out of this read. I kept realizing the constant symbolism---every object, every event, every setting, and of course every character were all purposely-created tools to intentionally express something deeper, a deeper truth or deeper reality. Not only in the story but in real life in general. If you're satisfied with the surface-level presentation of things in life (nothing wrong with that! Different people have different interests), it's still a thrilling adventure story and worth reading in my opinion, if not just for the book's seeming call for us to re-awaken our sense of empathy and humanity in an undeniably crucial time where empathy and taking action are profoundly needed. And doing that through an exciting, fascinating and overall well-written story? Win.I do have small hang-ups via personal opinion about how a couple parts were written (one part was a little sappy for my taste, another part was confusing and hard-to-follow, etc), but when are two human beings' minds going to line up exactly? I'm still solidly grateful for Ms. Salak's voice. Parts where I felt I may not agree with the way a place or institution is represented just inspired me to do my own research and end up educating myself more overall. Just wanted to add my criticisms atop my praises to make it a more well-rounded review. But all in all, there is so much to get out of this story. I wholly recommend.
The White Mary is the tale of a female journalist who visits most of the world's worst places - places where people are lost and hurting and human life is cheap. As we get to know the main character we discover something I have observed first hand - international war correspondents are very dysfunctional and fascinating people. The White Mary is all about loss and being lost. The only character in the book who seems to know where he is going and where he has been is Tobo, a shaman from the deep jungles. Author Kira Salak seems to have based most of settings and probably some of the characters on her own real world experiences. Marika Vecera is on a quest that (in my opinion) is never fulfilled. She is lost at the beginning of the novel and I still felt she was lost at the end of the novel. Without giving away the plot or spoilers, The White Mary contains extremely disturbing depictions of human brutality. They are as authentic as descriptions of war zones as as I have ever encountered and I am a combat veteran. The White Mary is a worthy read if you want to experience something outside the norm. I also highly recommend Googling Kira Salak.
While the writing was OK and readable, the plot jumps around a lot in time and space making it hard to follow and less than credible. I found the descriptions of the places the author wrote unconvincing - not that she hadn't personally visited these places, but I couldn't get a sense of her places from the writing. In fact, I've read other authors' accounts of entirely fictional places that were more believeable than this author's.I also found the main character's state of mind unconvincing and so her actions based on it didn't seem justified. Regardless of the final point of the book, I just couldn't make myself feel sympathetic towards her and having bought the book, I really tried to. All in all, I can't recommend this book for a purchase and really wish I had gotten it as a paperback rather than an ebook - at least that way I could get some money back reselling it.
Wow. I loved this even more than I loved Four Corners. Kira Salak is most definitely talented. I loved how she didn't just write from the point of view of the white woman traveling (which she obviously knows about) but that she also wrote from the point of view of the Papua New Guinean witch doctor. Having been to Papua New Guinea and knowing many Papua New Guineans, I really feel like she understood their traditional outlook on life. She definitely is not at all a fan of missionaries and paints them in a pretty terrible light in this book (which is kind of understandable, but still rubbed me the wrong way). I was able to get lost in this book and in the world she painted and really loved this story.
One of the best books I read. The truth in the story, look up the author after reading the provided description, so the internal journey she undergoes is more meaningful than a general story. The love story aspect of it is lovely but others will disagree with me; you have to take it in with the meaning of the other story elements and not by itself... in my opinion.
I just needed something to read. I never planned on something so epic, so full, so foreign and yet so simple. A female war reporter goes in search of a mythical male war reporter many years her senior. She must be guided through the jungles of New Guinea by Tobo. The woman's journey is not a walk in the park; it is a hack through the jungle, a slog through swamps (with leeches), and a trip through the hell we call malaria. She fights herself all the way, the other travails are minor compared with her internal strife. She comes through the fire, and into a state of grace, some of which will rub off on you, making you the better for having gone on the journey with her.
