This is a cute little booklet and is inviting to flip through. It has diagrams and directions for 29 stitches from the standard French knot, cross stitch and chain stitch to Roumanian, pistil stitches and spider web rose. My go-to stitch to evaluate the worth of a stitch guide is how it handles the bullion knot. If you stretch out the diagrams, it's 7 different steps. You can get away with fewer diagrams if the directions are clear. This one does a fairly good job with 4 diagrams and good explanations of each step.One problem is that sometimes there is a disconnect between the fiber and needle and the fabric, as if you are doing some of the stitches in the air! It would be very helpful if the directions for each each referred to the fabric it's embroidering because the stitch count is crucial: some stitches must be done over 2 or 4 threads on linen or evenweave whereas others are suitable for aida. Some are useful only for counted stitching and some only for surface stitching. One thing the book does fairly well is show the differences between running or double running stitch, outline stitch and stem stitch, all of which create a line. But each line has a slightly different "look" and is distinguished by the direction the working thread is held and the closeness of each stitch. I think I will get some good use from the booklet.

I recently started to again do some hand embroidery, after many years. And, I wanted a stitch reference guide that I could carry along with me. I had ordered a much more expensive, spiral bound book that was gorgeous, and had lots of intricate stitches. But, it lacked the basics. So, I ordered this and it's perfect. The diagrams are easy to follow, and they contain the most common embroidery stitches. It's small enough to slip into my tote of embroidery projects, so it's always right at hand, if I need a refresher on a particular stitch.

I've done basic embroidery in the past but wanted to learn 'real' embroidery and all the cool stitches. I bought more expensive, really beautiful books and they're great but I wish I had bought this one first. This book is perfect. Actually it's a booklet. Very small in size but the diagrams are large enough for my bad eyesight and easy to follow. There's easy to follow text next to each diagram as well. Dont let the low price or small size fool you. This is a great reference booklet and easy to carry around in your bag.

This is precisely what I wanted; a small, quick reference for some stitches. Not a big reference volume to flip through - so it's a good refresher. I have a different book for more details and projects, and this one is so easy to use for a reminder if I forgot a stitch. I am just learning embroidery and find this very helpful.

This is definitely pocket sized! It’s smaller (and the binding consists of 3 staples) than I’d anticipated. I bought this book for when I’m out and want to do a bit of stitching, but don’t want to be bothered to watch YouTube videos. It is a clear guide with detailed instructions (both images and write ups), and it will fit in my small purse. I’m not sure it was worth the price, but I’m keeping anyway. For photo reference, I have fairly small hands with size 4.5 ring finger.

A great book of embroidery stitches with directions and pictures, and it's small (4"x6") enough to carry in a bag or box that you carry your scissors and floss in.

Great little book to put into the handwork bag you take with you when you anticipate have to wait. I reminds you how to make those stitches you seldom use. It describes the making of each stitch and suggests some of the most common uses of each one. Not extensive but clear and includes the most common stitches for embroidery and crewel work.

Not exactly what I was thinking - all line drawings with no finished and in color photos. A little hard for me to visualize. Good price though.

Victor Hand has traveled the world photographing railways for the past fifty-five years. His work has been published widely in railway periodicals and books. He lives in Bar Harbor, Maine.Jeff Brouws is a fine art photographer and part-time writer who has nine books to his credit, authoring five on railroad photography alone. Victor Hand has been around. When steam was dying in the U.S.A. he was there, when steam was flourishing in the U.K., Japan, South America, Africa, Eastern Europe, and the remnants of the old U.S.S.R. he was there. For over 60 years Mr. Hand has been taking portraits and action photographs of steam locomotives. What sets him apart is the extraordinary technical skills he brings to his photography. His technique is reminiscent of Ansel Adams, everything in focus, finely balanced composition, and powerful awareness of the landscape and skyscape. Beautiful book. Black & white photos in wonderful detail. Takes you around the world in steam locomotive history. Hand is an industry expert who has traveled the world for more than 30 years to work with railroads and capture images of the massive locomotives that power them.

If you like traditional large-format black and white rail photography -- or just good photography -- Victor Hand is a master, and it shows in this book. Some of the material is familiar but much is new and exciting.

Great book - very easy to read and reference to for help in Wordpress site!!! I am not a computer wizard - or website master but I was able to build a website with shopping cart using this book - you can take a look at my site [...] if your interested in what I was able to build with using this book

The material is well presented, and there are clear instructional videos available online to supplement your learning. I purchased this book because it's used as a text book for the WordPress class I was taking at my college.

I started building a website for the very first time with this book and it gave me concise and accurate how-to's and short-cuts. The concepts were built one on the other in just the way I needed it to get a good start. There are incredible resources listed that you could spend days looking for.

I highly recommend Mr Plumley Wordpress 24 hours trainer new edition. I have been using his booksto TEACH WordPress in the past and now with the new version is even better. I like his way of teaching, organizationand even comes with movie tutorials.

This book is misleading. At the end of most chapters it includes a reference to online videos and where you can find them on the WROX site. (So far so good.) It also says, "You will also be able to download resources for this lesson from the website." This is where it's misleading, because THERE ARE NO RESOURCES for lessons on the website. What there are is lists of WordPress plug-ins. There should be some text and images that would be used to produce the book's sample "Island Travel" site, but I cannot find any such resources.If the way you want to learn a new piece of software is by following along on examples, you'll be disappointed in this book. It gives the misleading impression that you will be creating an "Island Travel" website. That's the impression you're going to get from skimming this book in a retail store. Then, after you've spent a considerable amount of time (too much time to return the book), you'll find that it is NOT what you bargained for.Stay away from George Plumley!!!

Comprehensive guide to getting started with WordPress. After finishing this book I also have a decent knowledge of adding plugins so that I can go on to more advanced material on developing my own plugins. I recommend this book for technical users who want to start working with WordPress or non-technical users who want to start their own blog.As for the previous reader who gave the book one star, potential buyers can check out the ratings of the previous version of this book by the same author to get a fairer review.

I am a bit sorry I bought this book. What I paid is too much for what it is. What it is is a book containing information that is readily available on the Internet. Now, I knew that would probably be the case, but I bought it anyway. There seems to be confusion between self-hosting and web service hosting. While the plugin information is somewhat helpful, the editing is not optimal, with repetition of poorly-phrased instructions and details. What is not explained well the first time does not improve with the repetition. It looks like it was cut and pasted a lot. I might buy this book at this price, but not the $45 I paid for it in the airport so I would have something to read on the plane.

Also new is that the reader will have to set up an account on autodesk's website to be able to pull those items and download them. This is very reasonably priced ( 45 - 50$ ) but it is intended for the lower level architectural drafting courses just the same.

I found this book to be quite informative, with a broad and entertaining take on the subject of communicating with the Other Side. The book is replete with some of the laws of spiritual interaction; some of the protocols associated with discarnate entities are explained in ordinary language, and make an otherwise nebulous subject quite understandable. This is a must for anyone interested in spiritualism, from the casual observer to the aspiring medium!

I loved the book, the name of it could have been a better title. It's of information and another author's prospective on Mediumship which is good because not everyone processes the same way. I think it's very hard subject to reach everyone on the same platform since we are all unique and individually receive differently. I would really like to witness this author's artistic talent too!

I believe our loved ones are around us, loving us and helping us get through their loss and our lives. This book helped further my belief and will help you as well. We need our spirit guides in this, a difficult life without them.

This book is full of information that not only is of benefit to those new to the belief in spirit communication. But it's an interesting read all around. So many tid bits that were new to me, as well as to those who have believed in Spirit Communication for many, many years. Love all of these books! We have most or all of them and they are a wonderful addition to our homeschool library. This is a wonderful way to explore biomes. "Biomes are very large ecological areas on the earth’s surface, with fauna and flora (animals and plants) adapting to their environment. Biomes are often defined by abiotic factors such as climate, relief, geology, soils and vegetation. " - These books are excellent for teaching your children all the plants and animals and flora and fauna in these biomes. Lots of beautiful images and illustrations and descriptions. It's not only a book with facts but it also tells a story. So lovely and yet informative. My son loves them. They fit great into our homeschool library. Most of our "curriculum" consists of books just like this. This is so much better than a text book or work sheets. This allows the kids to really get into the subject matter and immerse themselves in it and enjoy and love it. I would say these are great from about age 5-10/12Look for the other books in this series you can't go wrong with a collection of these fabulous books in your classroom or homeschool library.

The One Small Square series is wonderful: the concept is that you take a hypothetical square foot of an environment- woods, seashore, arctic tundra, rainforest, etc.- and explore it at all levels, from underground to the sky. Each book is extensively illustrated with all of the inter-connected layers of life- from fungus to megafauna- in the Square. On the margin of most of the 2-page spreads are activities that you can do, no matter where you live. Food chains, life cycles & seasons are explored, and the back section has an identification guide to all of the life forms presented in the book.We took One Small Square: Tropical Rain Forest with us on a trip to the Brazilian rainforest with our 5 & 7 year olds. The book was great- for the grown ups & the kids! We used it as a guide to identify many of the animals & plants we saw, as background to help the girls understand what they were going to see, as reading on the long trips up the river. We did many of the activities- some before, some during, and some after the trip. Our guide was so impressed with it that he ordered a copy for himself, saying that it was hard to find something with so much information that was both accurate and interesting to people at many different levels of knowledge. Highly recommended!

We are homeschooling next year and using this series as the basis for my 1st grade science. They have amazing pictures and so much information plus extra supplemental activities. Awesome books!

I was very eager to read the creative process about converting a minka into a modern home and the pictures that accompany the restoration. This is published by Princeton Arch Press. This is a book that is more of a memoir of life in Japan and an autobiography of the author and his companion living in the minka in Japan. Nothing wrong with that, if you are expecting to read about the author's time spent in Japan and his autobiography. I was expecting more of a book on minka architecture with emphasis on restoration with full colour pictures rather than having the restoration be in the background of the storytelling. No offense to John Roderick who has passed away, just expected something else.

The book is subtitled "My Farmhouse in Japan" but it's not really a book about a house. I would say that the house is a thread through 40 or 50 years of John Roderick's life, but the book is about several things - moving and reassembling the house, for sure, but also Roderick's career as a journalist, learning about Japanese life and culture, building relationships with Yochan and his family, understanding convoluted Japanese bureaucracy, and other themes too.John Roderick was referred to as a VCW (Veteran China Watcher) and I read this book because I am an Amateur Japan Watcher. I've lived in Japan, visited Gifu and other places Roderick mentioned, and visited houses like his minka (in historic villages - not ones that anybody was actually living in!). What a unique home to create, a modern living space in a traditional Japanese house. Imagine having to design living space in the attic which formerly housed the silk worms!What an adventure Roderick lived in his minka. It's a great story and I recommend it. (I read the Kindle version.)

In July 2012 Spiritual Cinema Circle marketed a short 15 minute film called "Minka." I was glued to this movie, and after watching it a second time, I cried. When I found out that John Roderick had written a book about minkas, I had to have it! The book shed more light on the relationship between John and Yochan. The movie and the book both complement each other. If you read this book and you find it inspiring or interesting, I recommend the DVD as well. I may not ever read the book again, but because it so reverberted with my soul, I doubt if I ever get rid of it. Just seeing this book on my bookshelf gives me comfort. I, like John, am an older Caucasian male, and I also have been in a relationship with an Asian male 16 years my junior. This book and movie have given me much validation to my relationship with my friend. My conclusion is that John and Yochan were not a gay couple, but their deep friendship was based on love of the purest kind.

On 10 March 2015, The New York Times featured the short film, "Minka: A Farmouse in Japan", directed by Davina Pardo. The film was accompanied by a short article by Ms. Pardo in which she explained that her interest in the story came from this book. Having thoroughly enjoyed the film, I ordered the book and read it in a matter of days.What I liked about the book: excellent writing, a fascinating story (that includes some very interesting anecdotes), lots of details about the ancient minka houses of Japan, but most of all it is a story of an intrepid American reporter living in Japan in the post-WWII era who develops a loving friendship with a Japanese family.

I loved this book! Rarely have I read a book that combines the richness of Japanese architecture, history and culture with the personal experiences of an American correspondent who simultaneously adopted a Japanese son and eventually gained a 18th century Japanese farmhouse in the process. It is a lively and fascinating account of John Roderick's life over a 50 year period of living in this country that remains an enigma to most foreigners. This is a refreshing look at a bit of Japanese archecture and family life accompanied by a witty, candid, and entertaining writing style. I strongly recommend it!

The book combines the author's personal story with information about the past uses of this type of house. It also recounts how his close friend (and adopted son) has rebuilt such houses for other uses in other parts of the world. It's nicely written and a touching story. I enjoyed the window it provides into daily life in Japan. Although I hoped for more pictures and larger pictures, I realize that this would have increased the cost. Even with the small photos, I think it'd the book would be useful to others who are interested in domestic architecture.

This is a fine read about the challenges and joys associated with the moving and rebuilding of a minka farm house, worthy of preservation. But the book is about much more: the deepening relationship between an American journalist--a veteran of World War II--and his Japanese friend, amd his friend's family. This delves into the details of traditional architecture, and matters of the heart. A wonderful literary ride.

I stumbled upon this book after watching a VIMEO movie called MINKA. It's an interview with one of the main characters of the book and made me want to know the rest of the story. I wasn't disappointed!
