I am a solo indie designer/developer and have been reading a lot on how to design and develop games over the past 3 years. It has been part time as I work full-time overseas. I have read numerous articles and books on game design to understand the process. Most of the material though I found assumed you were a student looking to work for a AAA studio; designing for a particular genre; or already working in a AAA studio and needing to polish your knowledge. They got me started, but I had to filter a lot of the info so it applied to my situation and needs. I came across this book while reading another book on game design. I am very glad to have purchased and read it. Unlike the others, it is genre neutral and focuses on the basics that a designer needs to understand to have a solid foundation. The writing is clear and the concepts presented have several examples across different genres to demonstrate how they apply regardless of genre. The book also takes the player-centric approach to game design. It also introduces a tool called Machinations which is used to test how the core mechanics work. That alone was a great thing to learn and has helped me immensely in my understanding of how to design games. I would highly recommend this book for any student of game design (formal or informal), especially people like me who want to take a hobby to a possible vocation.

One of the two great game books I've read, the other being Jesse Schell's Book of Lenses. Where the Book of Lenses is more broad, Earnest Adams' book is specific and detailed, outlining how to diagram game systems to analyze them. This means that it's usefulness may be more limited, but providing game design professionals with tools to help understand and process their work is a huge win.

Based heavily on Joris Dormans's doctoral thesis, this book discusses how to analyze game mechanics in terms of resource flow and feedback. It is an incredibly powerful framework which deserves more attention than it gets.Game designer professionals and would-be's should pay attention to the ideas and patterns elaborated here.

Ive only gone through this once but I will be going through it several more times.There are almost no books on game mechanics but this one makes up for it. It really goes into depth on what an economy is in a game and the effect of positive and negative feedback.There is of course a healthy amount of mechanics theory and plenty of game examples (across all major genres). However where this book really shines is the machinations system.Be warned machinations is no joke and will take some dedicated work to learn and practice. However machinations is a powerful prototyping feature that can help you make a good starting point for game balance and testing out plausible game mehanics or there effects.Great book just know it is very advanced and there is a learning curve!

I really like the not quite so fluffy style of describing the mechanics of game economy. The "machinations" diagrams and program is really useful, but it would have been nice if a simpe version of the source code for a simple version of a program that demonstrates the handling of pools and connection was available. It could have clarified some of the occasionally vague descriptions of how they consider pools and the sequence of evaluation.

Quick Overview:Pros- Informative if you are new to drones. A lot of diagrams and pictures. A lot of basic info that can honestly just be found online, but it's conveniently all in this guide.Cons- All of this info can be found on the internet. If you have even a little experience with drones, there is really not much here.This is a good guide if you're brand new to the world of drones/quadcopters. If you have more than a little experience with this subject, then you won't find a lot of useful information in it. It is full of diagrams, and pictures, and does a nice job explaining exactly how drones work, and gives you a little history on drones.I recommend this guide for newbies to the world of drones, but more experienced "pilots" may find it useful as a paperweight.

Slick layout but a little confusing trying to figure what words go with what pictures. In the photo section there was a statement that was flat out wrong. This caused me to lose confidence in all the information. The one good thing I got from it was when considering a drone buy an inexpensive one and learn to fly it. If you ruin a $60 drone you will not feel as bad as ruining a $1000 one. Learn to fly the cheap on first. All the controls are similar.

Okay, not great.

Enjoyed reading about drones for the first time. Learned a lot even if I never get a drone. I'll pass this book on.

Fun. My son (2)had a polar express themed birthday so I thought this may be a fun thing to do but actually my older son liked it better(5). He actually asked for it for his birthday. I think he liked the realistic look of the trains but didn’t use the activity book that I got as well he just put it on paper.

It has tons of stickers to say that they are reusable is a stretch. You can re-apply them on the pages provided in the book. After a couple times the stickers don't stick as well and bend out of shape. Suggest it for the bunch of stickers but don't expect to use the stickers more than twice.

That Sunday morning (our 12th wedding anniversary) the blackest cloud I have ever seen descended on our area turning day into night. Most frustrating was the absence of any survival information. Was the ash toxic? What about our outdoor animals? How long would it last? The radio didn't help and there was no 24/7 cable news. For lack of anything else to do, we filled a bath tub with water. House guests from Seattle, a three hour drive away, finally left Monday bypassing the ash cloud in a 7 hour roundabout trip through Portland. I wrote a magazine article about how one of our local hospitals coped with the ash and difficulty of staffers in getting to work. Our only casualty was a Samoyed dog that refused to come into the crowded house at the height of the ash fall. She later developed a severe cough and was diagnosed with silicosis of the lungs from inhaling the ash. She had to be euthanized. Almost 36 years later we are reminded of that day whenever we encounter an ash layer a few inches down when planting a tree or flowers.

I had a lot of thoughts/emotions throughout this generally awesome book:~Excitement to read it. I visited the remains of Mt. St. Helens when I was 9. I periodically love volcanoes.~Frustration. Over 50 of the first 139 pages are backstory on the Weyerhaeuser family/company for the past 100 years, and the very in-depth history of the forest service. Both could have been done in 5 or 10 imo)~Incredulity. The mountain developed a rapidly (and constantly) growing bulge on its side for weeks leading up to the explosion but very few seemed to recognize the severity or significance of this... Olson put it best in regards to lessons learned at Mt. St. Helens: "No one will ever again blithely and knowingly watch the side of a volcano bulge out like a balloon ready to pop and expect to outrun the ensuing catastrophe." -p232~Suspense. Olson took the timeline back and forth, both within the almost 2 months of activity leading up to the eruption and the personal stories of some of those affected by the blast.~Impatience. Olson took the timeline back and forth A LOT in the first half of the book.~Suspense (again) and mounting dread. He started referring to certain people in the past tense, and as I had not memorized the list of those who died before reading this the deaths and survivals were genuinely surprising to me.*giggle*"'It was like going to the land of Mordor,' said one logger." -p203~Validation. Take that, loggers! Clearly leaving the downed trees where they lay would result in faster recovery/renewal of the scorched surroundings! I kind of wanted to shout at the corporate interests in their haste to "not waste" the trees to rot. Not-at-all-shockingly, "The habitats that have recovered fastest are those that were left in disarray." -237About halfway through I was also kind of overwhelmed with just pure interest in the story and enjoyment of Olson's writing. I felt that wonderful compulsion to keep reading and ignore everything else to see how it all turns out (spoiler alert, the volcano explodes).Olson does a great job of creating a compelling narrative around this recent historical event and I really liked the book, learned a lot about volcanoes (now I want to be a volcanologist), and came to care for some of the real people highlighted in the personal stories. He blends political maneuvering, history and a natural disaster, personal stories, conservation hot-topics, and individual family histories and creates a genuinely enjoyable read. I have been talking about this book with my friends and family far more than I expected.Because I can't just be happy, if I had to give one more very minor complaint (which doesn't really count as a complaint, but more a back-handed compliment) it is that it did not contain more stories about the people who were near the mountain, both the survivors and those who died. Olson does such a fantastic job with most of those he does include that I found myself wanting to know more. Along those same lines, I would have loved to have the end of the book provide more information about those who survived and their lives since. I know not everyone will want to share any of that (I can't begin to imagine how traumatic that was), but as a reader I am sorry Eruption did not include at least footnotes on more of the people it focused on in the earlier parts of the books.Most impressively, he somehow created a text about a volcano that is both informative and accessible --something that I have recently (today) discovered to be VERY rare.I received an advance copy of this book as part of the Goodreads Giveaways program.

This is a very good book. The research is exhaustive, and the author appears to have gone to considerable lengths to talk to survivors, witnesses, scientists, policy makers and others who lived through the event and helped to shape the response. It's been 35 years since the blast, so Mr. Olson seized the opportunity to make sure the story was told.The book, aside from its dramatic re-telling of the events leading up the blast, and its aftermath, is very relevant for today. It provides insight and perspective on land use and the economic issues surrounding the blast.If you read the Wikipedia entry on Mount St. Helens, it makes it seem as if government did a lot to protect lives. But this book provides an entirely different accounting and is very critical of the state government's response. It illustrates the tensions between big business and government over access restrictions. He explains -- in a very compelling way -- how the death toll could have been substantially higher had it not been for the timing of the volcano blast. Fundamentally, this is a story about hubris.You can apply to response to the volcano's threat to response the leadership makes today to all kinds of threats. Climate change, in particular, came to mind.The land use history and the Washington politics around it foreshadows the strident arguments being made out West today.The history of Weyerhaeuser at the start of the book runs, perhaps, a bit long but it's easy enough to read quickly through it to get the heart of the story. And the heart of the story is a very, very good read.

As far as disaster stories go, it's hard to get much more awe-inspiring than volcanic eruptions, yet I found myself skimming whole sections of "Eruption" despite the subject matter. Instead of delving deeper into the human tragedy, or the science of volcanic eruptions, nearly a third of the book is given to dry, vaguely interesting histories of the forest service and the Weyerhaeuser logging corporation. Having just finished "A Wall of White" (the account of a contemporaneous avalanche disaster in the Sierras, and an absolute page-turner) I expected such a slim volume about an even more dramatic cataclysm to hold me fast from start to finish. It did not, despite the cinematic heights of hubris, ignorance, and bravery its cast of characters display. A missed opportunity.

Speaks from a position of immense privilege and lack of empathy. Avoid at all costs.

I don't condone plagiarism. Therefore, I'll be returning this book. The author apologized that her team and writers didn't credit people. So who wrote the book? She admitted to this and it can be found online. A lot of Christian writers use ghost writers. That's fine. Did she and her publisher skip the taking of other writers words and claiming them as her idea as no one will notice? I'm very disappointed.

This is Rachel's second book and just like her first book it is being marketed to both a Christian and secular audience. But the contents give one cause for alarm as there are many anti-biblical principles and thought processes that raise some serious red flags. Just like her first book, she is putting herself and her life above all else and presenting this as the way to live even if you are a Christian.(which is secular humanism). If you read reviews on the Gospel Coalition and elsewhere they will confirm that the principles touted in this and her previous book are not Biblical. It's very sad to see people with a platform use it for personal glory and advancement and then claim to be a Christian. Once again, if this were being marketed to an exclusive secular audience then the views presented would be pretty typical. If you're a Christian however, you will find the contents to be contrary to the Bible.

Very disappointed with the language in this book!

It's like every motivational and self help speaker you ever listened to got quoted (but not necessarily credited) here.And sadly, for a book published by a Christian publisher and authored by a professing believer, there is a noticeable lack of Biblical support, some profanity, and ideas that just aren't compatible with the Christian walk.I just can't recommend this to anyone.

I read this book a few weeks ago and I had to jump on here and write a review for those looking to purchase now that it’s officually available. First let me start by saying I’m usually the person who will read a book in one day. But I spread this one out so I could savor it and really absorb what our pal Rach was saying. If you are a woman with dreams and goals then you should read this book. Even if you’re not a woman or you don’t have dreams and goals then you should still read this book. Rachel Hollis gives you information that, if you’re like me, you already know in the back of your mind. But she makes you think about it in a new perspective. And she encourages and inspires you to take action. A must read for anyone looking to do better in any regard. 10/10 is recommend this to everyone.

Amazing Book! Got both the Audible and the actual book and I love listening to Rachel read the book to me. This is what I did with Girl, Wash Your Face and I now hear her in my head motivating me. I totally recommend this book if you feel that you are to be doing bigger and better things with your life but you can’t get past yourself.

The actual translations of the Egyptian Book of the Dead, aka Egyptian Book of Coming Forth By Day, are the usual translations that have been read many times before. Nothing new in this so-called "translation," although the tables of Egyptian hieroglyphs used in the Book of the Dead are useful for reference.But Seleem's main purpose is to convince the reader that the founders of Egypt came from Atlantis, to which he gives an alleged Egyptian name which is never mentioned in the Book of the Dead or anywhere else that Egyptologists know of. He also expounds an occult religious view of an organization he claims dates back to the beginning of history and beyond, and of which he claims to be a member. He encourages the reader to "see" his other books on religion for a fuller explanation.As you might expect, Egyptologists have universally panned this alleged "true" translation, ranging from his confusion between the Pyramid Texts and the Book of the Dead, to his remarkable and undocumented claim that Atlantis was destroyed in 50,509 BC and that the pyramids were built 45,000 years ago and his contention that modern science is "evil" and that the number -place "0" is an evil concept. Naturally, Seleem claims that other Egyptolists are evil as well.So if you have been led to believe that this is a "new and true translation" of the Egyptian Book of the Dead, join many others who have been duped as well. This is a book about New Age occultism wrapped around an actual translation that is neither new nor any truer than any other. For that, look at the translation by R.O. Faulkner or any other Egyptologist who isn't pushing the legend of Atlantis and his other books on occult religions.

Not only does it open your eyes about the nature of reality , but also reveals the truth about religion and where modern day organized religions get their constructs from. This book is recommended for anyone in search of living in accord with the most high laws which governs us.

Some info but author does not explain the why of his theories.Wrote to him to ask directly and he either couldn't or wouldn't answer. He want you to buy more books, Which are very expensive and not on amazon. I am moving on..

Dr Seleem's academic credentials are not listed anywhere in this publication.This seems an obvious intended omission once you start reading in this text his ideas concerning Egyptian Cosmology, history, science and other religious traditions of the world.Exactly what is Mr. Saleem a "Doctor of"?He does not state he has a doctorate in Egyptology or Anthropology, Archeology, Linguistics, Comparative Religion or Mythology.From his absurd conculsions and naive speculations on themetaphysical and monotheistic nature of the Egyptian religon and his rantings on the evil foundations of the Western scientific method, one might conclude he never attendedan accredited University or took a single class on comparative religion or mythology.Pass this book up and be happy you did.If someone sends it to you - send it back for a refund.If you are really interested in this subject stick with Falkner and Zahi Hawass.

Its so fascinating to find out that Egypt had incorporated Breathing Techniques and Yoga into their Religion. I always thought that Asia was the only area that really perfected this but Egypt also perfected this. I have many other books on Egypt and Egyptology but this is the one I read over and over again.This translation of the Scriptures is the most beautiful I've ever read. I feel like I'm reading a Bible and building a better relationship with God when I read it.The Egyptian Book of Life goes in depth in describing the Individual Gods and it displays the correlations and correspondences with the Elements, Forces, and Principles of Nature, Life, and the Universe.I picked up this book, started reading it, and finished it in 2 days. I've re-read it twice.I bought 5 extra books and gave them out to my Family and Friends as gifts.
