I thoroughly enjoyed the Robert Fagles translations of both “The Odyssey” and “The Iliad”, much more than I did the first time I read them in school. To even attempt a critique of the work itself would be to take yet another journey down a well-traveled road, so I will more usefully suggest why this particular translation is likely to be a good choice for most people.If you are one of the 99% of us that will read these classics in translation and not in the original Greek, there are a dizzying number of English translations to choose from, some in prose and others in verse, spanning a century or more. If you are not reading this as assigned schoolwork (where that decision is generally made for you), you may be trying to decide if this edition, translated by Robert Fagles, is the one you should choose. My own belief is that for most modern readers, this translation is a great choice.The Fagles editions of “The Odyssey” and “The Iliad” are very readable translations in contemporary English, and I enjoyed them much more than I did the first time I read these classics (decades ago) in different translations. I would recommend these to those reading these classics for the first (and possibly only) time, particularly if doing so on one’s own and outside an academic environment.Those deep enough into Homer to have different translations of these classics as their favorites will have read them more than once, and their first exposure would NOT have been the Fagles translation. I think a reader is more likely to return to these again if the first time reading them was a pleasant experience with literature one could understand.My advice is not to worry too much about whether or not those older versions are “more faithful to the original.” This is academic hair-splitting for most readers. Every translation from the original can never be truly exact, and is only the translator’s interpretation. And when it comes to verse, poetry only really works in its original tongue; a translator can make the finished product read like poetry also, but it won’t be the SAME poetry, especially when the original and target languages are not compatible.Both “The Odyssey” and “The Iliad” include nice introductions by Bernard Knox with some nice commentary. These were long but not TOO long. There is also about a dozen pages of “Notes on the Translation” pointing to particular line numbers (although unfortunately not noted at the applicable points in the text itself, which would have been helpful). There is also a very helpful “Pronouncing Glossary” listing every name mentioned in the book, with a pronunciation and a short description of who it is; this helped a lot in keeping the names straight, especially in “The Iliad” where there are so many more of them.I bought “The Odyssey” and “The Iliad” as a boxed set, and the quality of the paperbacks and their bindings was very good. The covers are durable, and the sturdy spine and glued pages look secure enough to withstand many readings.

Errors in formatting for the Kindle version are every couple of pages. Looks like the vendor used an OCR scan to make the ebook, but no one actually edited it. Iliad and Odyssey are both enjoyable, but a more user-friendly Table of Contents and less errors would have been ideal. The prose/novel format was amazing, and translation was great except for old archaic words and interchanged use of Roman instead of Greek names.

I did a lot of searching and sampling to figure out which translation to read. This one sucked me in. The language is so vivid and rich, I totally felt transported back 3000+ years ago, whenever this supposedly happened. I know it's a myth, but it felt real. Gooey violence with words is so much more shocking when your brain reassembles it from fragments of symbols translated and detranslated across thousands of years/cultures. Fagles did the job right.

With many recent movies (e.g. Troy with Brad Pitt) and the older B/W versions, on cable lately, my husband expressed an interest in re-reading these classics. After examining the books available and their reviews, I settled on purchasing this version combining the two - Iliad and Odyssey. The boxed set and format/quality of these books really filled my idea as to how to have these classic stories on paper. My husband is already entralled in reading the first and has stated that he really enjoys the translation and feels that it does bring to life these stories in the original form, not the revamped current movie versions. The Greek mythos is a delight to his reading thus our conversations on the book so far has stimulated my interest in reading the books, too...it has been far too long since I even thought of revisiting these books once read in high school.So the quality of these classics is very apparent in the appearance, binding and paper - hence the cost for this boxed set is 100% worth it! You won't be disappointed by the visual fact of the set, nor reading the translation of these classic books.

Very disappointed with this purchase. I love books and when the book is damaged it's hard to continue reading the book. The pages of both books are uneven and its hard moving from page to page. I can't continue reading this book. I demand a full refund or a new book that is not damaged. I paid full price for a new book and I received a damaged book. I would never buy from this seller again unless they make up for selling a damaged book. This was not a rating on the content of the book.

I was looking for a dive book that provided the first step in dive locations. This book was the 2003 edition, and seemed to be an improvement above what I could have found searching similar names on the "Internet" on my own. Since the book was organized into maps, descriptive notes, and photographs, the 300 pages, in large coffee table format, and with beautiful color pictures, it seemed to be just what I needed. Its drawback was that it did not talk about what gear was needed, how the dive would take place, nor did it talk about the dive PLAN, be it from the shore or from a boat, etc. So, the next step for the reader can be: "What kind of dive packages are available", and so on." (Hence, the book was not good for somebody who already had an idea of where to dive.) Yet, for me, as a beginner, this was a great survey of dive sites. Wrecks, fish, caves, lagoons, etc. From this book, my dive trip selection should be a little more accurate.

This is an exceptional dive book. It goes into great geographical detail about many areas. Don't expect an overview. Each chapter contains an expectional level of detail describing multiple "sites within sites". Some chapters could be sold individually as stand alone books. Very well written and very well photographed. Such quality reflects highly of the authors obvious passion for diving and travel. Even if you don't dive (or read) this book would be an amazingly beautiful addition to any coffee table! Buy it.

I got this book for my husband, as a Christmas present. He really loved it, and he is an addicted Diver, in spots all over the world. Highly recommended !!!

Finished THE BLACK GOD'S DRUMS from @pdjeliclark and YALL...yall. What an amazing piece of work. I am always, always impressed by my friend, but man did he put in some work here. The worldbuilding was stellar and really took into account all the ways his alternate history would play out. I think when black writers imagine a world history where slavery isn't just one devastating loss after loss for us it's easy to lean into something utopia-ish. Of course the author's background and knowledge would never allow for something that rose colored and convenient. Haiti might be free and flourishing in this world, but the tyrannical, racist regime of the American South and its Confederates still exist. A great weapon beat back Europe, but it cost the slave rebels too. But beyond the worldbuilding, the characters are so easy to fall into. If you've seen people talk about the nuns it's for good reason. Trust me. If there was nothing else to this story but the nuns then it would be worth it.Please, please read this story.@pdjeliclark is going to be a name you want to say you started reading from the beginning. He has that element that so many writers (myself included) strive to find. He knows his voice and he knows the kind of stories he wants to execute with it.Bravo my friend!

I don’t normally read many novellas, but P. Djèlí Clark has given us quite the fun romp in The Black God’s Drums. This is a wonderful fantasy novella, easily readable in one sitting, that does a tremendous job of plot twists and world building. There’s a lot to like here!This novella made such a fun morning read on my day off one week. First off, the world building was quite deep for something that took me roughly two hours to read. I loved the world that Clark was able to flesh out. He also has a gift for communicating with brevity but without sacrificing detail. Reading the novella was almost like watching a painter start with a blank canvas, and with each stroke, make a picture come to life. I’d now like an epic fantasy trilogy set in this same world, that’s the level of world building we’re talking here. There are also a couple twists that were fun to read and figuring out where things were going or how they’d end up kept things engaging.There isn’t a ton to criticize in this novella. There were a couple times I felt like things worked out a little too easily for the main character. Actually, it might be better to say that there were a few sort of literal deus ex machina situations that lessened the impact of some moments for me.If you’re looking for a fun, short read that does some really fun stuff with world building and gets your pulse pounding from scene to scene, then give The Black God’s Drums a read! I’m definitely looking forward to reading some of the other short stories and novella’s that Clark has written.4/5 stars.5 – I loved this, couldn’t put it down, move it to the top of your TBR pile4 – I really enjoyed this, add it to the TBR pile3 – It was ok, depending on your preferences it may be worth your time2 – I didn’t like this book, it has significant flaws and I can’t recommend it1 – I loathe this book with a most loathsome loathing

This book was amazing - the best new book I've read in YEARS. The author is a fantastic world builder, and his general descriptions of the goings on around the characters slowly divulge this magical place without great exposition. His characters are simple yet absolutely amazing. I would love to read more about this lively, unique world. I will read every single word this extraordinary young author writes! Thank you sir!

Djèlí Clark, and features an alternative history America where the events of the American Civil War have been slightly changed and the States are not as United as they once were. Slavery is still present, but there are key differences, and each state operates to its own rules. Separate to that, there is now steampunk technology and it’s on an airship that our main character, Creeper, wants to escape on and leave New Orleans far, far behind.Born during a violent storm, Creeper has divine powers curtesy of Oya, the African orisha of the wind and storms, who lives inside her and pulls her this way and that to her own purposes. Such as sending her warning signs or shoving attackers away by force, and in return Creeper is able to be stealthy and move silently, which enables her pickpocket lifestyle as well as being able to hear dangerous things, and eventually, come into close contact with a very dangerous weapon.The airship captain is especially a favourite, and I would love a series of her life and loves (please and thank you), as well as a heck of a lot more of this world and the rest of its characters – Creeper goes without saying, and I'd love to know more of the nuns.This is a powerful and elegantly written novella at only just 100 pages. You have a full world and history in your head, beautifully orchestrated characters, and while this is a satisfying read plot-wise it’s simply too good to leave it there – you’ll need and want more.Let’s hope we get it.

Each page has about 5-6 questions and they are so simple that even Grade 4-5 student can solve that. Questions are definitely not Grade-7 standard. Also, would have been better if exercises were based on some chapters (ie fraction, decimals, percent, tiagle etc) but they are all around random. So, for me this is no use. I will probably return or dump it somewhere or donate.

I would definitely recommend this book (Argo Brothers Math Workbook, Grade 7: Common Core Math Free Response) for regular 7 Grade math practice. As expected, topics are well organized, and the problems are fairly close to the ones included in Common Core tests.Should definitely improve math skills, if used on regular basis.

I find this book very helpful and glad i got it! It provides an extra practice for any student. This age where students don’t brings books home like we did back in the days, it a great idea to have something on hand to refine and practice the skills students learned in schools. I would recommend it!

We got this book together with Part I, and they are both very well written. Our son is working on Part I now, but we have looked through Part II, and I especially liked the way the problems were stated. Very concise and easy to understand. Looking forward to using this book soon.

Living in Virginia and being a native North Carolinian means I've spent my fair share of time at Colonial Williamsburg. In recent years, I've been many times just to stroll about and enjoy a good dinner. My particular favorite is Game Pie at the King's Arms.I picked up this cookbook there one day when I realized how much I loved the food! Like a critical reviewer said, many of these recipes may be found by ones or twos in other cookbooks (Williams Sonoma series comes to mind) but I've never seen them all together except in this book. After enjoying it thoroughly and getting compliments on the food, I bought more through Amazon to give as gifts and spread the love.Another note on the recipes seems pertinent for the modern cook. Many of the recipes have been brought up to date in terms of ingredients and cooking methods. An example is the prevalent use of lard, woodstoves for baking and the ubiquitous use of massive quantities of salt in traditional Virginia cooking. All these have been updated to be a bit less heavy in those areas and useful for your modern stove and oven. I have several recipes from the original time period as passed down from my own Northeastern North Carolina family and have long lamented that they are just inedible or do-able with modern methods and ingredients. I can now get a taste of them from this book.As far as content, there are a full range of recipes from Appetizers to Desserts and Beverages with everything in between. A good many of the dishes are friendly to vegetarians. And if they are choices that are good to make ahead of time or partially make ahead of time, it is generally stated for your planning ease.I've made a good half of the recipes so far and liked almost all that I have made. After I first got the book, we decided to have a full colonial Christmas and I had a houseful of happily full folks who adored the offerings. They were also happily toasted after serving Egg Nog from the book recipe, something we now do annually, but with slightly less booze!If I had one criticism it would be that I would like to see them narrow back down a bit in using local ingredients that are seasonal. By updating some of the recipes they mixed seasonal and local with imported or out of season ingredients. Most of this seems to be due to those ingredients no longer being raised locally or no longer harvested from our local ocean area or rivers, so it is a minor complaint.Whether it is the candies (we love the Bourbon Balls) or the vegetables (we love the Slaw, Celery Root Slaw, Polenta with Veg and so many more) or anything in between there is much to love. I think this is a fabulous thing to bring home from your visit or just purchase here for a few dollars less and enjoy.Cooking Skill Level: Beginner to Advanced depending on recipe.

I have been to Colonial Williamsburg and eaten at a couple of the establishments there. Kind of similar to City Tavern in Philadelphia. . . .As introductory comments in this book say (Page 12): "Colonial Williamsburg's operating taverns--Christiana Campbell's, Chowning's, the King's Arms, and Shields--re-create the tastes, smells, and sounds that eighteenth-century visitors to Williamsburg and townspeople experienced. Visitors sample foods suggestive of the past but that suit modern appetites." So, we this cookbook doesn't reproduce foods exactly as they were served at these taverns. Nonetheless, the recipes are certainly evocative of the era and make for interesting reading (and I have already identified several recipes that I want to use). The book begins by discussing each of the taverns mentioned above.The first set of recipes focus on appetizers and first courses. A typical dish is Chicken stock, featuring thyme, parsley, bay leaf, peppercorns, celery ribs, carrots, onions, leeks, chicken parts and salt. Soups? One recipe that interested me was King's Arms Tavern Cream of Peanut Soup. For a Constitution Day event at Penn State Harrisburg, a caterer prepared dishes from the Revolutionary era--one of which was peanut soup. It was delicious. So I want to fix a batch of this dish--featuring butter, onion, celery ribs, flour, chicken stock, peanut butter, light cream, and chopped salt peanuts for garnish. Seems doable--and looks like it would taste good!Salads, dressings, and condiments comprise another section of this cookbook. There is Christiana Campbell's Tavern Crabmeat Salad, Shields Tavern Salmagundi, and Christiana Campbell's Tavern Slaw. Egg, cheese, and vegetarian dishes. . . . Egg and onion pie looks tempting to me. Shirred eggs with Surry sausage, Welsh rarebit with beer, bubble and squeak, and an open-faced omelette represent some examples of dishes in this section. There is a simple macaroni and cheese recipe here, too, that I aim to make within the next several days. . . .Fish/shellfish: Examples include Sea Trout Fillets Topped with Crabmeat and Dill Sauce, Curried Shrimp, and Fish Stock. And so on, with poultry recipes, meat recipes, vegetables (I love making red cabbage' this chapter has a different take on this dish, and I am intrigued to try it out), breads, cakes and cookies, desserts, and beverages (I am interested in trying the Christiana Campbell's Tavern Wassail--which includes sugar, cinnamon, lemon slices, pineapple juice, orange juice, lemon juice, red wine, and sherry).In short, lots of fun!

The reason I gave this 4 stars is that not all of the dishes are photographed and not all the photographs match the directions in the dish. I have tried a few of the recipes and have found them tasty, though I question the accuracy of some of the measurements. I was also wanting reference to a historically correct recipe along with the modernized version (there are some references just not as much as I wanted).

Growing up only 35 minutes from this historical gem of an area, I was excited to see that some of the recipes showcased in the taverns were available to try at my home. Beautiful book, well laid out and great price- they're being sold for about $11-$15 more than the Amazon price in Williamsburg itself. Good deal, great book.

Fun book. We were in Williamsburg and tasted some of the items in the book. I knew I wanted to make more of the spoon bread and salad dressings for sure. I have used some of the recipes and they're quite good.

The meals were well defined and instructions precise. There were suggestions for side dishes to accompany the described recipe.Most of the ingredients were available in most food stores. Pictures showed presentation and preparation methods.I would recommend these recipes for the experienced cook familiar with cooking from scratch ingredients.Anyone who has visited Williamsburg, VA or would like to, would very much enjoy this cookbook.

This recipe book is great. After visiting Colonial Williamsburg, I feel in love with the tavern food and was anxious to make some of my own. This book has all the great recipes, I have made several already and they were easy and very enjoyable.
