Wow! I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS BOOK! From the inviting cover which makes you feel in the presence of an old world Italian kitchen to the numerous pages of love and lore... this book is an absolute must have! I couldn’t put it down! I made one of the “gut medicine” recipes the very first day! As stated in her book, Mary-Grace has accomplished her task of recording the old traditions, recipes and lore in an organized and easy to read manner! While reading this book I felt comforted as if I were in the midst of my very own Italian family ... not many books can create such a “magical loving atmosphere” when you read them! This book ensures that the old ways will remain alive and well!

I read this book in a single night, unable to tear myself away from the treasured memories it brought back of my own Italian-American upbringing. On almost every page, I found myself saying "Yes! Yes! It was that way for me too!". As in all Italian-American households, the kitchen is the hearth, the pulsing nerve center of the family, where food is lovingly prepared and consumed, where the important business of the family - including communication with spirits and ancestors - is carried out. Like the author's family, mine would have been appalled to be called anything but devout Catholics, but they observed the same saints and holidays with the same sense of reverence. She emphasizes the vital role that food plays in our culture, each herb, ingredient and method of preparing holding a special significance. I felt like I was conversing with the author at her kitchen table over her fresh espresso and biscotti. If you grew up Italian-American, treat yourself to this precious collection of memories of our ancient traditions. She reminds us that magic resides everywhere, in the ordinary kitchen tools, ingredients and nurturing of the all-important unit: family and friends.

It’s taken me a long time to figure out how to write a review for this book, this book is an absolute treasure and I wanted to do it justice. Turns out, my opinion isn’t the one that I think people will want to hear. I sat down and shared this book with my 88 year old grandma, Italian-American through and through. We looked through the book together, and as she read through it she became completely animated, telling stories, remembering so many things that my great grandparents, and great great grandparents had used to say, things they believed, and practices they did. She loved the section on proverbs, saying several times “My mother used to say something JUST like that!” or “My father did this all the time!” She got to the section that discussed omens and dreams and was shocked to found out, that my great grandmother’s “funny little ideas” about dreams and lottery numbers, weren’t just her own ideas she made up, but were actually something she had learned from her own family that was passed down from Italy. She looked at the section on Saints, and was so happy to see the ones mentioned, saying “look! That’s the Saint from where we’re from in Italy!” And of course she had to check out the recipe section saying that the recipes were “wonderfully put together! Beautiful! This girl knows what she’s doing!” This book is a treasure, read it, share it, pass it on and keep this tradition alive.

This book is a treasure for both Italian Americans wishing o reconnect with their spiritual heritage and for those who are not of Italian descent, Rue explains the culture and spiritual practices of our culture in a way that will allow the reader to connect and explore further. This book should be required reading for those who wish to explore the magical practices of Italy, alongside the works of Ernesto de Martino.

Rue’s kitchen Witchery helped to bring me back to myself. It brought me back to my childhood, growing up as a first generation American on my mothers side, born in Sicily but raised in the US, and hearing about her stories and practices from SicilySo far away. Food, family, and kitchen have always been important to me. Rue helped me to see how vital they are to my cultural identity and most importantly to my spiritual identity. I wasn’t sure I had an authentic spiritual lineage, not quite fitting into American culture but being so far removed from Sicilian culture. Not belonging to practices from other countries. Now I connect these parts of my childhood and adult life, (like how important grocery shopping, keeping a tidy house, and connecting with family are to me. It’s not just weird habits unique to me and my mom- Now I see exactly where it comes from!). I have a resource to reference for deepening this spiritual study. Thank you.

This book is a complete breath of fresh air. You actually feel yourself welcomed into the family kitchen and can smell the foods and feel the love and magic. Italian Folk Magic was a great read. This book is so well written that I felt like I was sitting at the kitchen table listening to my Zia Rue. The family stories are great and the author manages to include a ton of history along with an insight into how Italian-American's shaped their own world. This book felt very genuine and helped me understand what Italian Witchcraft was. I verified almost all the information with my partner and his Italian family. I even read him stories out of the book and he told me similar stories about his family. I highly recommend this book.

I worked in a DC restaurant and asked the cooks what I should make for sides. That's when I first heard about macaroni and cheese being a "must-have" dish for Thanksgiving. It never appeared on any of my family's feast tables. Mac and cheese was always an end-of-the-month budget stretching dish at our house. Greens too. My Southern mother would make a pot of greens and a pot of white beans with skillet cornbread as a budget-stretcher meal, never a celebration meal. If my dad was eating with us, he would get a pickled pig's foot to eat along with the greens and beans. Over the years after talking with friends and comparing our family's food traditions, I learned there are similarities and differences in white and black southern foodways.In "Soul Food" culinary historian Adrian Miller explores the origins the foods that make up the quintessential soul food plate: greens, mac and cheese, fried chicken, beans, yams, corn bread and few more. It's a fascinating history of the Soul gastronomy. Back to mac and cheese -- originally a European dish made with costly and exotic ingredients introduced to Americans by Thomas Jefferson which became a luxury food of the wealthy white plantation table, prepared by enslaved people. As time went on, the ingredients for the dish became readily available commodities that were often included in the "poor boxes" distributed during the holiday season.This year, I'm going to make some mac and cheese, using one of the recipes in "Soul Food" for my multicultural family's Thanksgiving feast, in honor of all the history that Adrian Miller chronicles, in honor of a shared culinary heritage, and in honor of the enduring struggle for social justice that has been played out in our changing foodways.

This book takes us down a tour of American history via a previously un-trammeled path and as a result provides fascinating insights far beyond its primary focus on American soul food. By thoroughly exploring the history and derivations of the cuisine that has come to be known today as soul food, the author takes us into the life and culture of American black slavery, the interactions between whites and blacks over that history, and some little-discussed aspects of what it means to be black in today's America. Yes, you'll get a great deal of information about the food, along with example recipes of each major type. But far more than that, you'll come away with a greatly increased understanding of American history and culture. Along the way, you'll learn some fascinating tidbits, such as why the color of your cornmeal matters (and why it is different in different parts of the country) and why red-colored drinks are a cliché in the African-American community. Highly recommended!

Miller's history of soul foods and their origins is well researched and enlightening. His writing style is easy with enough humor and keen observation to delight even the most discerning reader. The inclusion of recipes adds to the book's appeal. I read this in one sitting and wanted more. Bravo Mr. Miller for a job well done!

Defining "soul food" is a task that others have attempted; yet a precise definition remains elusive. Author and "soul foodie" Adrian Miller meticulously and lovingly researches the complex history and traditions of this uniquely American cuisine. Miller compares and contrasts soul food with southern and down home cooking. He does this through planning a hypothetical, traditional soul food meal and then dedicating an entire chapter to each of its components. With this method, Miller weaves African American culinary history from West Africa, the Atlantic slave trade, the antebellum era, post Civil War poverty across the South, Jim Crow, the Great Migration, the Civil Rights era, to modern attempts to revive soul food. Other ethnic foods have found a niche in the American fast food and medium food markets (think Olive Garden, Applebees as "medium"). Yet soul food remains largely regulated to homes, church dinners, and small, local restaurants. Miller's last chapter is appropriately titled, "Whither Soul Food?" as he explores the future of soul food.Yes, there are recipes at the conclusion of each chapter! This is an excellent history book with flavor. I recommend this for book clubs for adults and teens, as the meetings could include sharing of recipes from the book.

Entertaining and educational...a cookbook and so much more! In the Black community "soul food" engenders many emotions, good, bad, and many degrees in between. This book gives us an historical look at soul food in the United States, its origins, what/where it is today, and where its heading.

I collect cookbooks and have a "passion" for cookbook that also deliver a message or have a story. This book does both, and does them well. I was impressed by the cover first of all because it catches the eye. I love to display my cookbooks on a bakers rack in my kitchen, so the dual purpose is perfect for me.This book is well written; you will not regret purchasing.

Adrian Miller has written the book I always wanted to write. Built on a foundation of excellent research, he adeptly peeks into the nooks and crannies of kitchens throughout history and all over the world. In so doing, he had honored my favorite cuisine with candor, punctuated by his beguiling sense of humor. From "Sunday cluck" to "motherless greens," to "liquid soul," he covers all the bases (or should I say pots, pans and dishes). The book was a pleasure to read and I look forward to referring to it often and cooking his recipes time and again in future.

It takes a brilliant author to accomplish that. Don't pass this one by.

When a five-year-old child falls asleep on a train in India, his life is changed forever. As he sleeps, the train transports him away from everything he knows. The child from a rural village awakes in the capital city of India, Calcutta, with all the dangers an urban setting brings. Used to begging for food, he manages to scavenge enough to survive, choosing to sleep each night with a group of holy men, thereby insuring his safety. The boy's name is "Sheru," which is the Hindu word for "lion." My first question was answered, for I could not see a connection between an African animal and a small child from India. Over time, Sheru becomes Saroo, the name he goes by today. After surviving about two months on the streets of Calcutta, Saroo ends up in an orphanage while authorities attempt to find his family. When no one comes forward to identify Saroo, he becomes available for adoption. Within a few months, a childless couple, the Brierleys, adopt Saroo and take him to Hobart, Tasmania, Australia to live. A few years later, the couple adopts another little Indian boy, Saroo's brother, Mantash. While life in Australia is a happy time for Saroo, he never forgets his Indian family, his mother, Kamla, named after the Hindu goddess of creation, Kamala, his two older brothers, Kallu and Guddu, and his younger sister, Shekila. The father of the family has married a second wife and has abandoned his first family, thereby leaving them pitifully poor. Kamla earns a meager living carrying construction bricks on her head, but all the children scavenge food and beg for money to survive. As the years go by, Saroo wonders if his memories of his previous life are accurate or merely the imaginings of a five-year-old. Saroo has his Australian friends and his Indian friends, and he becomes aware of the internet and Google Earth, a program that allows one to get a bird's eye view of geographic locations. It is then that Saroo decides to search for the neighborhood in which he grew up. After five years of meticulous searching and against all odds, on March 31, 2011, Saroo locates the house he grew up in! He begins to plan his visit to India twenty years after he left it. Concerned he will hurt the feelings of his adoptive parents, he gently refuses their requests to accompany him, feeling this is something he must do by himself.The rest of this book deals with the incredible reunion with his Indian family, how both his families meet, and how the product of two widely diverse cultures adjusts to a contented future. The years-long search could have ended in failure many times, but I believe Destiny played a major role in reuniting Saroo with his Indian family. It also speaks to the stubbornness of an individual who refuses to give up on the dream of finding his original family, assisted by countless people who offered opinions, encouragement, and other assistance when needed. I was especially impressed by Kamla's faith that her son would return if she simply stayed where he could find her. I highly recommend this book.

I'm pretty sure that almost everybody who reads this book, "Lion" by Saroo Brierley, is going to see the movie with Dev Patel. Or, has already seen it. The book, which was originally published under the title of "A Long Way Home: A Memoir", has been reissued as a tie-in for the newly released movie. "Lion" is the story of a journey a five year old boy makes by himself from his hometown in rural India, to the large city of Calcutta. (now, Kolkata) and after being lost in the streets of the huge city, is taken to an orphanage, where he is luckily adopted by an Australian family from Tasmania. He lives the next twenty years, happily with his new family, but always remembers the tragic journey and his mother and siblings he left behind in India. With the advent of Google maps, he's able to trace his birth family's village. He then travels back to India and is reunited with that family, while remaining close to his adopted family and life in Australia.That's basically Saroo Brierley's story and how he tells it in the book is interesting. But as I read it, I felt a bit of a remove from Brierley's telling it. Am I asking for more emotion, and if so, is that a fair request? I'm looking forward to seeing the movie next week, and there, on the screen, might be a more vivid recreation. I enjoyed reading the book, though.

What I found interesting was that I could envision the book as a movie from it's narration--even if a movie about this story had not been made.We first meet Saroo as a toddler, then narrating his memories before the age of 5. He does so for many chapters, until he becomes an adult and seems ready to back track any memories or words he had seen from his past. ( At this point he has moved out of his loving, adoptive home on another continent), yet felt comfortable enough to find his biological family--the one he remembers at age 5--from India. And that, he does!Over all, I believe that the adoption center he was living in after losing his way at the age of 5, saved his life. If he had continued to live on the streets of places after becoming disorientated and lost from riding 'run-away trains', the child could have been taken into horrific bondage. God Bless him for that not happening!It is a fine story.

I remember being 5 yrs old and I think it would have killed me to find myself alone in a huge city like Saroo did. This is an amazing story of his survival, adoption in Australia and his eventual reunification with his family in India. This true story kept me on the edge of my seat throughout and in the end left me with joy in my heart! In the end many lives in India and Australia were enriched because of Saroo's adoptive parent's selfless decision to adopt, educate and nuture a needy child. As well as a compelling story, the book is well written. I will admit, I skimmed through one section about 1/3 of the way through. I don't know if it was an issue too heavily dwelt upon or my weak and pampered life. I couldn't take hearing again and again of the reality of 5 yr old Saroo's hunger and total destitude situation. I ached too much for the little boy. I would love to see the movie and I definitely recommend the book.

Just what I was looking for

Truly a must read. The Cappellan Confederation is stronger now than it had been since the devastating 4th Succession War. As the old ways are swept aside by the new Chancellor Sun-Tzu Liao, the Cappellan state has used its recovery to take back what is theirs. With new weapons, ships and units that are better trained and motivated. The Cappellan Confederation is poised to reinvent itself as a new power. Although the manual did not discuss the impact of the Trinity Alliance with the Magistry of Canopus and the Taurian Concordat, the lack of information on the Maskirovka still could not blunt the book from giving the Confederation an impressive standing.Where the Confederation will strike next is uncertain. With the Federated Commonwealth on the verge of Civil War, I am sure Sun Tzu will take advantage of the opportunity and exact his revenge.This Field Manual will show you just what he has as his tools.

This addition to the field manual series is easily as good as the Draconis Combine book. A couple of things prevent a full 5 though. First, there's almost no information on the Mariskova(sp?) and there is a problem with the Marshall variant that supposedly uses the stealh armor(the problem being, in addition to not having stealth armor, it can't - not enough open crits due to ferro-fibrous and jump jets). The new tech is pretty extreme, but well balanced. Definitely a must buy.

Along with this are a load of new MW 3rd Edition things, like the St. Ives Compact affiliation, loads of new life paths (like Warrior House aspirant or Death Commando covert tour).Plus, the new Stealth Armor, new missile munitions, new 'Mechs and 'Mech variants, and the Feng Huang Cruiser.Buy this, even if you aren't a Cappie! Its so cool!

Its nice to see FASA release a Field Manual on the CC. They always seem to be overlooked. The book is good at providing the in-depth information that you would expect from a Field Manual, but seems to be lacking some of the refinement that is present in the other House Field Manuals. A definite addition to any hardcore BT fan's library.

This is a must-have for anyone who reads the Battletech novels. This catches you up on all the events that are going on that the authors don't write about in the novels, including the Death Commandos, who are a fearsome unit that get very little novel space.

About the Author

Will grew up an automotive enthusiast in Chicago, with parents that were not enthusiasts, dreaming of working in the car business. He earned his Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Illinois at Champaign/Urbana and then went to work on a small SCCA racing team. Soon after, he got a job as the Technical Editor for the racecar and tech cult-classic Circle Track magazine in the late 1980s. He worked full-time in the magazine business for the next 10 years, writing tech for Circle Track, Rod & Custom, Hot Rod, and Motor Trend’s Truck Trend magazine. In 2000 he went to work for General Motors as a Design Release Engineer in their Structures and Closures area (bodies and doors). He worked through the Engineering ranks up to Lead Design Engineer and in 2003 he became the Program Manager at the GM Performance Parts division.

This book is a fantastic reference to specifics (bore, stroke, CR, part numbers, etc. etc) on the various LS1/6, Gen III/IV engines.But the "Build High-Performance Chevy LS1/LS6 V-8s" Meh. There are three combos at the end of the book, built by very reputable shops. It does give you insight into what a combo might make, but nature of print and technology, it's out of date the second its printed, and technology has advanced since. It's nice having all the values and what not in a single source, but the combos, save the money and read LS1Tech.

Provides very useful tips, suggestions, and OEM part numbers and tools that are specific to the Gen III GM engine. This is a must read before assembling your own, since it covers things unique to this particular engine. Also identifies which parts can be switched between different production years, and what to watch out for when doing so, etc. General step by step instructions are very clear and easy to read, including those about getting the engine out of the car. The first chapters outline the development of this powerplant and the people involved, which is good knowledge to have if you really want to know these engines in depth. Only 4 stars because the material is a bit outdated. However, all of the important stuff will always remain relevant. This is not a blueprinting book, so it doesn't go into all the "hows and whys" about building engines in general, but it has valuable information that, in combination with a more thorough engine building book or knowledge, will make building your own LS1/LS6 a clear endeavor.

This book delivers what it says; great "how to" guide for getting more horse power out of your LS series engine. Easy to read and understand, lots of photos and plenty of tips. The book caters to the F-body as well as the corvette. How to remove the engine and make the upgrades; cam, heads, intake, and exhaust. I came away with a very good idea of how to accomplish these upgrades. The last chapter covers the various programing tools; diablo, LS1 Edit, etc., which you will need to take advantage of the upgrades it discusses. I recommend this guide as a great first step when you decide its time for more out of your LS engine.

Bought as a gift for my boyfriend who’s rebuilding a c10. He was really impressed with the book as a whole but even more with all the detail. He made the comment that if you want to build, it’s the book needed!
