I opened the box and immediately noticed that this is a -much- smaller book than the Panther edition. The reason? It's about command line Unix, nothing else. This is described as "we've come back to the Unix roots" and that this is consistent with other O'Reilly titles like "Linux in a Nutshell". Perhaps, but titling a book "Tiger in a Nutshell" and discussing only Unix terminal commands is misleading at best, especially since this is a major departure from previous editions. This isn't a bad unix command reference and it is specialized for the BSD Unix of Tiger. Just don't expect it to be more than that.If you're looking for a book that covers Tiger -and- the unix commands in a lot of technical depth, you may want to look at "Mac OS X Tiger Unleashed". That isn't in any sense a nutshell book (it's huge) but it has all the material that this book doesn't.

I am starting on MAC, I know Operating systems in general, but this is very concise and complete for my needs

Yes, this is a command-line centric book - because that's where all the POWER is (the graphical user interface is well designed and hardly needs a reference). This book provides a great OS X-specific reference - so you won't have to test all the commands in your "UNIX in a Nutshell" book to see which ones work. Aside from the command line, this book provides important information on Managing Mac OS X (See PART THREE, below) and an excellent index for finding your information. The sections (and approximate page count) in this book are:PART ONE - Commands and ShellsIntroduction - 3 pagesUnix Command Reference - 251 pagesUsing the Terminal - 13 pagesShell Overview - 3 pagesbash: The Bourne-Again Shell - 10 pagesPART TWO - Text Editing and ProcessingPattern Matching - 3 pagesThe Vi Editor - 34 pagesThe Emacs Editor - 12 pagesPART THREE - Managing Mac OS XFilesystem Overview - 15 pagesDirectory Services - 15 pagesRunning Network Services - 10 pagesThe X Window System - 11 pagesThe Defaults System - 3 pagesINDEX

To be clear, this is a Unix reference. The commands are defined in enough detail to understand and use them easily. It also includes information on command line utilities that are installed with the Xcode Tools. A number of the common UI functions in Tiger have command line equivalents, like Software Update, NetInfo Manager, Grab (screencapture) or Spotlight, so you can create pretty powerful shell scripts. The rest of the information is covered with less detail (i.e. vi, emacs, regular expressions, X11, etc). The chapters on bash, vi and emacs, for example, are ok - but I'm not sure who would use them. If you're coming from a Unix or Linux background, you probably already know this stuff as the info is pretty basic. If you're coming from Windows, I'd recommend other, more detailed, books for learning bash, vi, emacs, etc.I like the detail on the metadata (aka Spotlight) commands. I also found a couple fun commands I hadn't used before, for example "say". Now you can have your shell script announce "Dude, I'm done!" on completion. I will be using this book for the Unix command reference and probably not much else, so it works for me.

Before you go buying this book expecting it to be about Mac OS X with lots of pictures and descriptions about iTunes and the like, if that's what you are looking for this book is NOT for you. If you are looking for a reference on UNIX commands and how to use the Terminal mode on the Mac with OS X 10.4 then you are in the right place. Chock full of more than 500 pages, I really like the way that this book is laid out. Not too long, not too short, this reference lays out all the relevant UNIX commands that you would find useful on the Mac and provides short descriptions of how each command should be used. There is some discussion on the xWindows system and Network Services, but this is mainly a reference on UNIX commands and all the keyboard shortcuts available in emacs.A very nice reference for Max OS X users who use the Terminal on a daily basis. If you are a UNIX expert you probably won't get a lot out of this book, but if you do use the UNIX side of things on the Mac it's probably worth the purchase to add to your library.***** RECOMMENDED

Noah's Curse: The Biblical Justification of American Slavery (Religion in America)

Review

"Well-researched, interdisciplinary, and strongly moral Historians of American religion, race relations, or slavery, as well as theologians interested in the interplay between the Bible, culture, and social problems, will find this book as excellent resource."-- The Journal of Religion"Noah's Curse must be recognized as the most innovative and enlightening study of the Biblical defense of American slavery ever published. The dubious legend of Noah, as Stephen R. Haynes points out, is still with us, along with the Confederate symbols flying over public places and fundamentalists denouncing racial mixing. The Southern mind, he brilliantly explains, has woven the conventions of honor, the burdens of shame, the practice of race subordination, and the concept of divine grace into a single cultural fabric. In the field of religious and sectional history, this work will take an honored place next to the studies of Eugene Genovese and Donald Mathews. No one interested in American religious history can ignore this intellectually powerful study."--Bertram Wyatt-Brown, University of Florida; Author of Southern Honor and The Shaping of Southern Culture"The ancient rabbis suggested that every biblical text has seventy legitimate meanings (and no doubt an infinite number of illegitimate ones). Stephen Haynes has produced an amazing history of interpretation of the Ham and Nimrod narratives. It becomes clear through his careful research that such texts are supple and vulnerable to misguided theological passion. This book lets us reflect on old mistakes and, by inference, invites us to reflect on our own availability for parallel misreadings. Noah's Curse is an exercise in historical disclosure not to be missed by those who care about the crisis of reading in the church and in a Bible-rooted culture."--Walter Brueggemann, Professor of Old Testament, Columbia Theological Seminary; Author of Spirituality of the Psalms>"Haynes's study provides a thorough and rich sense of the interpretive history of the scriptural story"--Christian Century

Fundamental to anyone studying the Antebellum South and American religious history. This is an outstanding and thoroughly sourced work.

I would re-subtitle the book the Genesis Justification of Slavery. From a biblical approach he narrowly looked at the historical and theological traditions of Genesis' interpretation. Of this scholarship it was magnificent, but if one names the book "Biblical justification of slavery" I would expect it to cover more than just Genesis. He does not approach the issue of slavery from a systematic theology perspective at all.

The Old Testament has never been of much interest to me either theological or literary. Perhaps being able to read this book is one reason I rate it with four stars. There are faults with this work, not the least of which is the author's over use of quotations. He points out many interesting writers on the subject, but comes short in discussing the varied views they represent. He does offer the point that Noah's curse on his son has a place in the proslavery literature in America. He presents us with many quotations of many authors without informing us of the acceptance or rejection of these beliefs by the layity. One of the most interesting people he presents is Josiah Priest, "a New Yorker known for his frontier adventure stories, Indian captivity narratives, and `true' tales of the Revolutionary War. [page 42]...whose Slavery as It Relates to the Negro or African Race (1843) was widely read before the Civil War [page 69]." The statement of Priest's position in the authorities of the slavery movement tkes the author 47 pages. For someone unacquainted with Josiah Priest this is a long delay. ( This very influential book is available in a reprint from Amazon.) Bishop John Hopkins of Vermont is also cited on page 75 but the author again neglects to place him in perspective of the 19th century crisis. The modern scholar Bertram Wyatt Brown is cited by the author 10 times in relation to part sSouthern honor played in the interpretation of Noah's curse. He should have spent more time on contemporary authors if he wanted to show the place of this scripture in the 1800's.Benjamin M. Palmer, a 19th century cleric, ranks very high with the author; Palmer is considered from page 125 to 174. Perhaps my problem with this book is that the author tries to make a book out of the handling of Noah's curse on Ham and the tenuous connection of it with American slavery. If you are interested in the curse itself or in Noah or the Old Testament then you will rpbably enjoy this book.If I were not interested in the place of religion in the justification of slavery I would not have bought it. Upon reflection I can't say it was a good buy. Personal prejudice creeps in here. I don not believe that Noah ever existed, that there was ever a curse on poor Ham because he had sex with his mother, or that it would make any difference it this all took place. I am more interested in the effect these writings had on the populace of the time. If the reader's main interest is in the life of Noah or Ham this is probable a good buy.

It was required reading.

Although Dr. Haynes, a religion professor at Memphis' Rhodes College sent me this book, as part of his self explanation for the more recent LAST SEGREGATED HOUR, (OXFORD 20120) I didn't really study it until the more recent book came out, and I highly recommend NOAH'S CURSE as a key component of comprehending this young scholar's serious commitment to comprehending the incomprehensible - organized and systematic color race prejudice within his own Christian denomination, (and in the larger Christian community), for he is an ordained Presbyterian minister. For me, his recent FACEBOOK page about the LAST Seg Hour, shows a photo of young people, black and white, lined up around a fortress like front of Memphis' 2nd Presbyterian Church where we stood for many weeks and my guess is the photo came only from the black press, as the activities remained "INVISIBLE" in the 'white press' of Mamphis for many, many weeks, reflecting the power and the propensity of white folk to ignore any challenge, however logical or VIVID, as my old Southwestern English prof would say, to their their false image of their own superiority, moral, spiritual, financial, intellectual, and well, you name it. A kind of ever willing 'superiority' that rings down thru the ages of American culture. The book is all the more interesting, as it surveys not only the leading Presbyterion pastor, (and Southwester.Rhodes founder) Palmer from New Orleans, in two great chapters, one devoted to his sermons in defense of slavery, but another to his sermons in defense of segregation. Haynes puts this in context even of medieval thinkers on this particular story, and frankly, even though as a lawyer I realized in the last decade the BIBLE,or Sunday school materials, are the only PRINT most folk read, once they leave high school or college, it still is stunning that such a ambiguous ancient story about Jewish tribes thousands of years ago should have so much power into the 20th and 21st Century. Perhaps the editors of the journal NARRATIVE should take note and do one of their special editions on it, as to this reader it has literary, psychological and philosophical implications not yet pondered. (Or perhaps in Not Seeing, as in Nazi - ing, such avoidance has beendemonatrated, yet still not ordinarily taken account of. Howard Romaine

I liked this book overall. It's an interesting bit of analysis on the issue. The author is a religious scholar, though, not a political historian. The analysis is very good, but there's not a great deal of discussion about how the South used the "curse" to justify slavery. That information is there, just not in as great a depth as possible. A nice addition to the study of religion and slavery, however.

Letters to a Young Poet, by Rainer Maria Rilke

Amazon.com Review

It would take a deeply cynical heart not to fall in love with Rainer Maria Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet. At the end of this millennium, his slender book holds everything a student of the century could want: the unedited thoughts of (arguably) the most important European poet of the modern age. Rilke wrote these 10 sweepingly emotional letters in 1903, addressing a former student of one of his own teachers. The recipient was wise enough to omit his own inquiries from the finished product, which means that we get a marvelously undiluted dose of Rilkean aesthetics and exhortation. The poet prefaced each letter with an evocative notation of the city in which he wrote, including Paris, Rome, and the outskirts of Pisa. Yet he spends most of the time encouraging the student in his own work, delivering a sublime, one-on-one equivalent of the modern writing workshop: Go into yourself and test the deeps in which your life takes rise; at its source you will find the answer to the question whether you must create. Accept it, just as it sounds, without inquiring into it. Perhaps it will turn out that you are called to be an artist. Then take that destiny upon yourself and bear it, its burden and its greatness, without ever asking what recompense might come from outside. Every page is stamped with Rilke's characteristic grace, and the book is free of the breathless effect that occasionally mars his poetry. His ideas on gender and the role of the artist are also surprisingly prescient. And even his retrograde comment on the "beauty of the virgin" (which the poet derives from the fact that she "has not yet achieved anything") is counterbalanced by his perception that "the sexes are more related than we think." Those looking for an alluring image of the solitary artist--and for an astonishing quotient of wisdom--will find both in Letters to a Young Poet. --Jennifer Buckendorff

I really enjoyed this book. it’s interesting to watch as the story unfold through letters.Really a great example illustrating the importance of mentorship. and reading the letters you really get close to the two writing these very intimate letters. its a very interesting dynamic. The part I enjoyed the most is that it gives you perspective, cause the problems the student in the book goes through as the years go by, are problems we can all kinda identify with in some way. not just poets but all kinds of artist. and then comes the experienced teacher who has dealt with it all and in some cases still is, and he shares his wisdom. The point of the book being that the journey of the artist is a universal one which we all must walk. But with shared knowledge and some help we can make it quicker and maybe avoid some of the more permanent pitfalls.Just knowing your not alone is comforting and thats why I really enjoyed this book.

Would give this a "0" stars if possible. This vendor is NOT selling the publication of Rilke's book, but has gotten the text and laid it out (probably with MS Word, horrible for layout) and done a cheap printing of it. Am I going to return it? Probably not, only because it's more effort to pack it, take it to the P.O. and mail. But I'm very angry about this book, I do publication layout professionally, and am an editor, so the extra spaces between words, the dropped punctuation, and visually awful layout is an abomination to Rilke's work. I know how they did it: they stripped the text out of an e-book, put it into Word and left-aligned, never proofed it, and sent it to China to be printed. Monstrous. Never buy from this outfit.

Whatever kind of writer or creative artist you are, Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet is a voice worth listening to. The letters were written in the early 1900s when Rilke was about 30 years old. He wrote ten letters to a young poet named Franz Kappus, offering not only advice but a philosophy on how to cultivate the creative spirit. As a fiction author with three novels out, I often get discouraged. We writers know that art and struggle go hand and hand. I’ve read all the pep blogs about following your passion and keeping the faith, recognizing the common Van Gogh blues, blah, blah, blah. Rilke’s book is such a refreshing look at why a person writes at all. He addresses doubt, loneliness vs solitude, love, and patience. This is probably one of the most impressive of books I’ve read on this subject. The thoughts in this little 100-page book is a true source and one to keep on the night stand. I love to open a page at random and see what Rilke has to say to me for the day. Page 61 told me this morning that “We must embrace struggle. Every living thing conforms to it. Everything in nature grows and struggles in its own way, establishing its own identity, insisting on it at all cost, against all resistance.” This book is for any artist who wants inspiration on how to live as an artist.

Louth's translation of Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet is a mediocre translation, does not match that of M.D. Herter Norton's (Letters to a Young Poet), whose quintessential translation must be the standard for all others of Rilke's work. You cannot see it the following pages in the Look Inside feature, but the following famous passage in Letter 8 is an excellent example. "Mr. Kappus," the young poet, might as well be us, and the passage can be read without the words "dear Mr. Kappus" and stands alone -- at least in the M.D. Herter Norton translation.M.D. Herter Norton's translation (Letters to a Young Poet), Letter 8, reads: "How should we be able to forget those ancient myths that are the beginning of all peoples? The myths about dragons that, at the last moment, turn into princesses. Perhaps all the dragons of our lives are princesses, who are only waiting to see us, once beautiful and brave. Perhaps everything terrible is, in its deepest being, something helpless that wants help from us. So, you must not be frightened, dear Mr. Kappus, if a sadness rises up before you, larger than any you have ever seen. If a restiveness like light and cloud-shadows, passes over your hands and over all you do. You must think that something is happening to you. That life has not forgotten you. That it holds you in its hand. It will not let you fall. Why do you want to shut out of your life any agitation, any pain, any melancholy, since you do really do not know what these states are working upon you? ..."Compare this to Charlie Louth's translation of this same passage in Letter 8 (Letters to a Young Poet):"How can we forget those ancient myths found at the beginnings of all peoples? The myths about the dragons who at the last moment turn into princesses? Perhaps all the dragons of our lives are princesses, only waiting for the day when they will see us handsome and brave? Perhaps everything terrifying is deep down a helpless thing that needs our help. So, dear Mr. Kappus, you shouldn't be dismayed if a sadness rises up in front of you, greater than any you have ever seen before; or if a disquiet plays over your hands and over all your doings like light and cloud-shadow. You must think that something is happening with you; that life has not forgotten you; that it holds you in its hand; it will not let you fall. Why should you want to exclude from your life all unsettling, all pain, all depression of spirit, when you don't know what work it is these states are performing within you? ... "Note that word order in changed in by Louth to give a different meaning, and this is often the case. Also, compare to Stephen Mitchell's translation of the passage in Letter 8 (Letters to a Young Poet (Modern Library) and (Letters to a Young Poet):"How could we forget those ancient myths that stand the beginning of all the races, the myths about dragons that are at the last moment transformed into princesses? Perhaps all the dragons of our lives are princesses who are only waiting to see us act, just once, with beauty and courage. Perhaps everything that frightens us is, in its deepest essence, something helpless that wants our love. So you mustn't be frightened, dear Mr. Kappus, if a sadness rises up in front of you, larger than any you have ever seen; if an anxiety, like light and cloud-shadows, moves over your hands and over everything you do. You must realize that something is happening to you, that life has not forgotten you, that it holds you in its hand and will not let you fall. Why to you want to shut out of your life any uneasiness, any misery, any depression. since after all you don't know what work these conditions are doing inside you?...."Really, "that wants our love"? Our LOVE? No reason for this translator's license, none at all. Mitchell's translation likewise strips the Letters of poetry, and, of note, his introduction to the Letters is somewhat bizarre. If one goes further back in this letter, to Rilke's discussion of solitude, the demarcation between the beautiful and the mediocre translation is equally clear. I find M.D. Herter Norton's translation by far the most beautiful, poetic and meaningful, although reading other translations can add to the reader's understanding, or else, show the reader which translation speaks to him.On the other hand, here is an opportunity to compare, free of charge, three translations. I have chosen to confine myself to the translation by M.D. Herter Norton's of Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet, since I don't want to interrupt the flow of reading as I study these great letters, and feel it is best to choose one. It is a shame the M.D. Herter Norton translation is not currently in print in hardcover. Still, there are used copies to be found and I'd rather buy several paperback copies of Norton's than have a nice looking hardcover of a mediocre translation.

The 6th edition has more information. Just completed a WITS personal training certification that required this 7th edition. A classmate had the 6th edition and the appendix had more useful info in it. The page numbers from the 7th to the 6th edition only varied by 2 or 3 pages. I would rather have the 6th edition.

Worst book I've ever read. Constantly gives contradicting information to the point you can't trust anything it says. Also makes statement about high vitamin E intake causing strokes based off 1 study that only had 50,000 people in it. There were almost the SAME amount of people had strokes taking vit E as the people that took a placebo. The author didn't put much effort into researching facts. One chapter tells you to use certain #'s for sedentary people to find their calories needed for day, then uses low activity #s instead in the case study.

Must have a basic phys. background to understand quite a bit of the language. It is a great text if you already are familiar with Ex. Phys.

My husband will be using the book for class and will us it later when he will need to look up stuff when he needs it.

I bought it to get certified as Personal Trainer, great book! Lot of information, well explained, a lot of external tools to make the learning expierence easier

Personal Training Knowledge — well written.

Great book!
