I absolutely loved this book. I have read many stories detailing the horrors Jews faced throughout Europe before, during, and after World War II....and expected this story to be similar. It was different...I connected with it far more that other stories of the same genre. Perhaps knowing it was based on the author's family made it all the more moving. It is a book that I finished a few weeks ago, but cannot stop talking about to friends and family. It is a story that has stayed with me. I highly recommend!

I will start with the dislikes, move on to the likes, and my own personal thoughts.What did I dislike about this novel?Absolutely NOTHING.What did I like about this novel?1. The characters. Even though I know it's based on a true story, I enjoyed the characters.2. It made me cry, laugh, and cry a ton.3. Finding out more about what the Jewish community really went through in order to survive.4. Well-written. Hats off to Mrs. Hunter. I'm an instant fan.5. The careful research that went into making this a novel.6. The patience Mrs. Hunter must have had. Not many writers want to talk about their family's history. It takes so much time to research and fact-check. Kudos to Mrs. Hunter.7. The ending and the acknowledgement. For the first time, I feel completely satisfied and that's hard to achieve.Now for my personal thoughts.What are you waiting for? Go buy this book already! It will make you laugh, cry, cry some more and it will keep you on the edge of your seat. I won't give anything away. You have to be willing to have a box of tissues nearby. It also makes me thing of my ancestors. What they went through to make it this far. Would I ever write about my family's history? No. I don't have the patience. We cannot deny the painful part of our prior history. We need to learn from it and do better as each generation passes. I cried, I honestly did. It made my stomach churn and drop. But this is a book about sacrifice and love. I know as a mother, I would do anything to save my children. But this family is simply remarkable. Yeah, maybe some parts were dramatized but Mrs. Hunter took me there. I could imagine the horrors her family went through. If this book doesn't make you feel something, I don't know what else to tell you. I plan on buying this book on hardcover and it will remain a treasure for the rest of my life. What we need is a whole lot more love in this world and a lot less hate. Thank you, Mrs. Hunter. Bless you and your beautiful family. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your story. I'm sure it was painful for her to write this. I could only imagine.

I would normally avoid a book written about this dark period of history. But I absolutely loved We Were The Lucky Ones. Beautifully written and fast paced. Each chapter is filled with hope and the amazing strength of spirit of each character. I finished it last night and I found myself thinking about the Kurc family several times today. Terrific read!!

Maybe I wasn’t paying enough attention up front, but when I embarked upon this book I was expecting to read a story that would have fallen into the genre of “historical fiction,” i.e. a fictional account of a fictional family told against the backdrop of the all-too-real canvas of World War II. What I got instead was the astounding, near unbelievable, TRUE account of a Polish-Jewish family’s miraculous survival during this darkest time in human history. It is not until the epilogue/“Author’s Note” that we learn that the author’s Grandfather was in fact one of the main characters in her remarkable story.The author acknowledges that her family elders, quite understandably so, were not eager to discuss the horrors of their past. Given the sparsity of details that were handed down to her, I imagine that a good amount of this epic tale can be chalked up to poetic license, so to speak, and that the writing of this tome entailed a good deal of “fleshing out” of a very skeletal handed-down (and oftentimes not first-hand) account. Nevertheless, the essence of this tale is true, and nothing short of miraculous, awe-inspiring and, indeed, life-affirming.The protagonists here are Sol and Nechuma Kurc, their five young-adult children and their respective spouses. The story unfolds all over the far-flung corners of the globe during and after the Second World War: Poland, France, Siberia, Palestine, Argentina and, lastly, the United States. (Keeping track of the many main characters may have been a bit unwieldy, but the author handily provides a family tree at the book’s beginning, which I found myself consulting time after time.)The aspects of this story that moved me most deeply were:First, one cannot read this book without being struck by the perseverance and determination of the family members to provide for one another and simply to survive at the most elemental level during times of starvation, extreme weather, persecution and all the other privations of war-torn Europe. To say that We Were the Lucky Ones is a testament to the human spirit is to state the obvious.Second, the love this family held for one another and the cohesiveness of the family unit – especially when all else was lost – was something that really touched me. There is a not-so-very subtle message here about what matters most in life. The instances of self-sacrifice (Halina for her parents and Mila for her daughter, to name just a couple) are particularly noteworthy.Third, the family, having immigrated to the Unites States immediately post-war, made the utmost of their lives here, all going on to become successful in their chosen spheres. It strikes me that, as clichéd as it may sound, America is truly the land of opportunity for those who are willing to make it happen. As an American whose own Grandparents came here from Europe, I have to say that the author’s choice to bring this out brought a lump to my throat.I don’t know if it’s even possible to describe a Holocaust story as having a happy ending, but if it is at all possible – considering the devastating losses to the world and to humanity at large - this family’s story had one. In fact, the book lightly touches upon the concept of survivor’s guilt: Toward the end of the book one of the characters muses about how none of them should have survived, and yet (against the odds) all of them did. They were the lucky ones….A word about the unspeakably brave souls who harbored the hunted: people like Halina’s boss who was willing to vouch for her (on more than one occasion), or like the peasant family who hid Sol and Nachuma behind a false wall in their home, or the Mother Superior who ran an orphanage and who was willing to accept the falsehood that little Felicia was “Aryan” in order to spare her life. To paraphrase a sentiment of Anne Frank’s: despite everything, there truly are good people in this world. In a world gone mad, these courageous individuals are true heroes.The sanctity of life and the belief that life is something worth fighting for are not new concepts to Holocaust literature. This book ranks right up there with the best in the lessons it has to impart.All in all, edge-of-your-seat story-telling, with an extremely poignant ending. Definitely recommended.

On the one hand he does not get bogged down in details failing to get to what God is actually saying in the text and what we are to do about it. On the other hand he shows that carefully reading the text is necessary in order to grasp what God is saying rather than reading in whatever we want to find. I especially appreciate his sensitivity to structure and flow of thought as well as his careful connections across the covenants.I think pastors will find this volume very helpful in the task of preaching (The Founders Journal)... The Gospel Coalition blog has been rating commentaries, and this one got a very high rating. Since I'm starting a sermon series on Elijah, I got a copy from Amazon. I was surprised, as it is not a typical scholarly/academic commentary, yet it is filled with pastoral insight. Not a lightweight "devotional" commentary, yet one that you'll want to read for the wisdom and exegetical gems gleaned from the text. If you're looking for an analysis of the Hebrew text, go to the Word Biblical Commentary. If you want to understand what the text has to say to real people, this commentary is invaluable. I'd also give high marks to the New American Commentary vol 8 (I & II Kings) by Paul R. House (B&H).

This commentary is wise, pastoral, interesting, and even funny. The picture is just a random sample to give you an idea of the way Ralph Davis writes. I highly recommend anything he has had published. Very helpful. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed in any of Davis' commentaries.

This book by DRD was a tremendous although accidental find for me. I was preaching through the life of Elijah in the summer of 2015 and got this book on the second message or so that I preached. DRD does some excellent background into the history surrounding Elijah and his interactions with Elisha, Ahab, and Jezebel. I would recommend it for anyone who is a preacher or just for personal devotional work.

Davis is a skilled expository with a solid view of Scripture. He takes the text as presented instead of twisting it to reflect modern sensibility. His humor and wit allow him to stand apart from other conservative commentators as he explains the text with knowledge and applies it to everyday life.

Another excellent commentary from Dale Ralph Davis. I absolutely devour his books and consequently have tons of notes written all over the margins of my Bible. Great book from a great teacher--and it helps that he gets me laughing while he's teaching!

This is a commentary that brings many other commentator's to the table, both pro and con to Davis' position. Davis makes the reader so very aware of what is afoot over the vast span of time that 1 Kings covers, and that is what happens when mankind, meddles in 1st commandment stuff. This is timeless in its teaching. Man refusing to believe that God has spoken, that we are to have no other gods before us. When writing of Solomon, Davis notes, "The text is not interested in Solomon's politics but in his affections." This is true for all the characters that follow. When Davis writes, "the problem is not wealth or luxury or high handedness or wisdom or popularity or renown or splendor or achievement but other gods. First commandment stuff," he summarizes the problem and the issue for mankind. This teaching is timeless in its truth. God is sovereign and when we meddle in First Commandment stuff what happens is, and I quote Davis: "What happens when one make first commandment compromises? One meets the anger of the Lord." I highly recommend this book.

Dale Davis has very good insights. I have loved his commentary. Very applicable to life today.

If you have never read Ralph Davis' commentaries, you are missing a real treat! He has a depth of insight and the way he applies the Scriptures is truly fantastic. His academic ability is shown, but he does not over power you with it. His OT commentaries are great for Bible study and seeing how an ancient text applies in the 21st century. If you don't own them, you need to get them today.

About the Author

Patrick D. Howard, CISSP, CISM, is a senior consultant for SecureInfo, a Kratos Company. He has over 40 years experience in security, including 20 years service as a U.S. Army Military Police officer, and has specialized in information security since 1989. Mr. Howard began his service as the Chief Information Security Officer for the National Science Foundation’s Antarctic Support Contract in Centennial, Colorado in March 2012. He previously served as CISO for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in Rockville, Maryland from 2008–2012, and for the Department of Housing and Urban Development from 2005–2008. Mr. Howard was named a Fed 100 winner in 2007, and is the author of three information security books: The Total CISSP Exam Prep Book, 2002; Building and Implementing a Security Certification and Accreditation Program, 2006; and Beyond Compliance: FISMA Principles and Best Practices, 2011. He is a member of the International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium’s Government Advisory Board and Executive Writer’s Bureau, which he chairs. Mr. Howard is also an adjunct professor of Information Assurance at Walsh College, Troy Michigan. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1971 and a Master’s degree from Boston University in 1984.

Howard, CISSP, CISMPublished 2012USBN 978-1-4398-2075Steven EddySept 1, 2017The author has done a great job given the state of the Risk Management Framework (RMF) at the time. He was involved in one of the first RMF assessments which was for the Department of Transportation. This was before the DOD requirement to transition from the DIACAP Certification and Accreditation process to the RMF Assessment and Accreditation (A&A) process. NIST Special Publication 800-37Revision 1, Guide for Applying the Risk Management Framework to Federal Information Systems a Security Life Cycle Approach is the overarching document for RMF. The problem with this book is that RMF has matured much since it was written. Assessment and Accreditation have been increasingly automated. The process has become more complicated and complex. Roll names have changed almost entirely. Practical steps required for a modern A&A process are not given. DISA’s Enterprise Mission Assurance Support Service (eMASS) application and website is essential and mandatory in prosecuting a modern A&A effort. eMASS uploads Excel test result spreadsheets and scans, creates the System Security Plan, the POAM, the Implementation Plan, the Risk Assessment Plan (RAR) and the Security Assessment Plan (SAR). Many new roles such as the Security Control Assessor – Reviewer (SCA-R) and Security Control Assessor- Verifier (SCA-V) are not mentioned, although they are two of the most critical roles. The execution of these roles are also accomplished in eMASS.An essential first element in categorizing systems is DoD information technology (IT) is broadly grouped as DoD information systems (IS), platform information technology (PIT) systems. This is not covered. Nor is one of the main advantages of RMF, reciprocity. Reciprocity is the ability to use authorizations of other similar systems to inherit compliance for security controls to a new system, avoiding redundant time and effort. Additionally, in categorization, there are also now categories of Very Low and Very High in addition to the Low, Moderate and High of the past. There is no mention of the Initial Approval to Test, which provides for testing of the system before production development takes place to prove the system concept is workable.FIPS, NIST and CNSS publications need to include titles, and brief summaries early in the book to avoid confusion and tell what subject matter they include in order to make referencing them easier. There is a glossary in the guide, but no acronym list, which is essential particularly in light of the renaming and adding of roles and processes. Inclusion of a compact disc containing a searchable soft copy of the book would be very helpful in studying the subject.Although this book was very well written for its time, it is very much out of date and needs to be updated along with the test it serves. I would not recommend reading or studying this as it will only confuse someone who is currently involved in or wishes to be involved in modern RMF program Assessments and Authorization processes. I have been told that a new test and training materials are being developed by (ISC)2 to update this certification. It is suggested that candidates wait for the new updated test and study materials before studying for the CAP certification. I hope my review will aid them in this effort. In the mean time I would wait for the new material before voyaging forward on a CAPP certification.

I have done most of the material covered in the book as part of my job in the past. The book was somewhat helpful, but as other reviewers have noted some of the material is outdated or otherwise incorrect. Fortunately by studying with the book as well as rereading the appropriate NIST documents I was able to pass the CAP exam the first time I took it.

It reads like a dictionary and is not focused on exam topics. I have been doing this kind of work for years and have been CISSP since 2001. This book was more confusing than helpful because it is written so badly. It is just long winded vague and their is no effort to map it to a job skill. It is PURELY CONCEPTUAL. It will make reference to a specific NIST document, but it will not put any context to statements, the graphics are average to poor and generally the book puts you to sleep. I recommend a third party book if you are preparing for the exam or a 3rd party class if you are attempting to gain the skills.

I had a hard time reading this book (I made it ~ 20 pages). There are repeated references to DITSCAP and DIACAP terms that are not used in NIST terminology that drove me crazy. Needless to say I didn't read it at all for the exam. Stuck with the primary references (NIST SP Pubs) and still passed the exam. Seemed like he tried to regurgitate what he had in the DIACAP book with a sprinkling of RMF vernacular.

A good study guide and informative. I wish the book also came with some practice tests on CD or something similar. Also, full copies of the most recent policies and publications that are referenced through out the book would have helped immensely instead of having to spend time finding them on my own, from websites that are usually secured from the average user not working from a DoD network.

Its a read like all ISC books, but the content is pretty straight forward and the flow is logical, I will say that as a DoD IA professional there are some inaccuracies in the book, re: the book states that Physical (DoD 8500 PExx etc..) controls are inherited controls, this is not always true, it depends on the task, as an example, on an Army task I was on doing testing and C&A leading to issuance of an ATO all Physical and Personnel controls were NOT inherited, they were considered shared, shared by the site (in this case TRADOC) and Ft Eustis, both entities shared the responsibility and as the accrediting entity we could not write the controls off as "inherited" they either passed or failed-as directed by the Army ODAA, so as with all INFOSEC/IA/Info Security controls, either DoD 8500 or NIST 800.53, they are often very specific to the site environment, task, and branch and variances do exist, it is not always so cut and dry.

Well written book! I've used this book with my students at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) to teach the CAP certification course. There are a few things that have changed and as such should be updated, but that is to be expected in the technology field. The idea is that you use this book as a supplement to the published NIST and FIPS guidance.

It's a beautiful book, but it is not in English and Chinese. Very disappointing.

wonderful book

We bought this at the Seattle exhibition of the terracotta warriors at Pacific Science Center. My daughter loves it. Our edition is only in English. I suspect that the fact that we saw the exhibit together helps pique her interest, but the story is very nice and I don't think that having specific familiarity with the terracotta warriors is necessary for a child to enjoy the book.

Don't buy if you're looking for a bilingual book. Extremely disappointing.

Trish Sebben-Krupka is a chef, culinary educator, cookbook author, and freelance editor. She is the owner of Local Girl Makes Food, a personal chef and culinary education business catering to clients interested in vegan, vegetarian, and eco-friendly diets. Sebben-Krupka is a former corporate chef for the Viking Culinary Center and Carl Schaedel and Co., Inc. She is the author of The Complete Idiot's Guide Greens Cookbook and Idiot's Guides: Canning and Preserving. I wanted to discontinue much of the meat base of my diet, and dairy as well. It is a very well put together "cookbook" with good recipes to follow and based on the items I wanted to eat. Having 200 "whole-food" recipes, it offers a lot, but of course there are cook books with all numbers of recipes and some are mostly just information about the plan. This one impressed me because I am one that, if and when I cook, I have to have a pretty good guide to follow. So a good number of recipes.

It's a great book with nice photos and great instruction and strategy for a novice like me. I gave it five stars because its so solid and resourceful. I would like to see in the next book nutritional values with recipes (ie) sodium carbs fat ECT. I think it be very helpful in so many ways for the people who are in trouble with there health and trying to turn it around. It may change the whole * rating system and make it "six star"... very happy great book !!!!! It's truly an amazing book and my comment is NO way is trying to slight this book. If your looking to make a change to plant based living, this is for you.

My new favorite! I've made several recipes and they have all been amazing! Love the photos, too.

This was a gift for my daughter-in-law who likes to eat healthy. I bought this last year and try to use at least one recipe a week. It's a good change to eat better and I only wish I had this book when I was her age.

Wonderful book. Absolutely every recipe we've tried has been fabulous, utterly bursting with flavor. The plant-based muffuletta is so good that it's become a regular staple in our household and the chili is is by far the best meat-free chili recipe I've found.

I love the informational sections and the recipes I've tried are delicious.

everything i expected. lots of new ideas

The recipes were both vegan and vegetarian and I did like that. They were easy to prepare and good to eat.
