This book was literally a miracle. I was asked to read and review this book only days after praying to have greater faith. I'm not very religious person and was intrigued with the premise that the OJ Simpson case could prove the existence of Jesus. These two factors lead me to read this book, which I found very interesting. It reminded me of the faith I had lost in this time of global warming, drought and terrorism. It gave me hope!

This book was amazing, brilliantly written. I did not need to be convinced of the reality of Jesus Christ, but this book provides facts and figures that will greatly aid in the defense of my faith. I plan to use it as a resource and have already passed it onto others. If anyone has a heart and mind to know the truth, this book will convince them. It is a combination of depth and simplicity that anyone can understand. Thank you, Larry, for writing it. I pray that God will use it in a mighty way!

This is a small, slim volume you can easily finish in one sitting, even if you're a slow reader like me. The author makes a case for Shinto as a universal religion--not in the sense that it claims universal authority, but in the sense that nature is everywhere, and Shinto is about celebrating, revering, and being integrated within nature. Shinto is non-dogmatic and its practices can be meshed with other religions. Therefore, you can practice Shinto anywhere, and the "meditations" (which is really a misnomer--in the text they are called litanies) are non-specific so can be used by anyone of any faith. The litanies are inspired by various natural elements, grouped by season, such as fire, waterfalls, trees, stones, earth, etc. The book explains basic Shinto concepts that are important to the worldview, such as "celebration" and "observation." These aren't articles of faith but rather ways of relating to life and nature. There is also a section on how to perform misogi (a waterfall purification ritual), though I found it difficult to picture some of the actions in the instructions.One thing about the book was disappointing: the litanies are mostly identical. Each one has a few lines that are specific to the element under discussion, but most of it is repeated for each litany. For example, the litany on trees is 4 and a half pages long, of which only 12 lines or so are unique to trees. And that litany had more specific lines than most. The rest is sort of a call and response pattern prayer focused on purification. Shinto doesn't have a concept of sin, but it does have a belief in impurity or "pollution." Pollution isn't caused by immoral acts, usually, but by coming into contact with unclean situations or substances; however, it can have a negative effect on one's spiritual, mental, and physical health, so there are many purification ceremonies to remedy it. (This isn't explained in depth in the book, I just mention it here for context.) If a reader didn't know this, they might find the emphasis on "purity" and "impurity" to be a little off-putting. For my part, I was expecting the meditations to have more emphasis on nature itself as opposed to the purification of humans. But the author does do a good job of showing how those things are related in Shinto.Each litany is prefaced by a short section on why that particular element is revered, referencing other cultures/religions that have had similar attitudes, e.g., Druids. These introductions are much shorter than the litanies themselves, and I would have liked them to be longer and more detailed, with more in-depth discussion of their role in Shinto.It's not to say that you can't find inspiration for meditation in this book (especially the "discursive" style of meditation where you focus on a word, phrase, or concept and allow insights to arise)--you can easily use the lines that are specific to each natural element and make them the focus of meditation. You likely wouldn't use the rest of the litany in that case. If you are interested in practicing Shinto outside of Japan, or building your own system of "revering the earth", or integrating nature meditation into another faith, you may find this book useful and inspiring. I think this would be especially true if you are inspired by nature but not too familiar with Shinto and thinking of dipping a toe in the water to see if it's a good fit for you. For a potential purchaser I think the question is just whether you want to spend $12.95 (the price at the time I bought it) for a book you will read in one sitting. I feel like the book should have either been much shorter, omitting the repetition and costing much less; or much longer and more detailed. But your mileage may vary.

This was not totally what I was expecting, but that is not a bad thing. I guess I was thinking more of a book of ponderables as opposed to a devotional. That being said, this is the first Shinto related book I have read. Maybe not the best to start with if you are just beginning your journey into Shintoism. Not to say it is a bad book; perhaps as I delve more into Shintoism, I will appreciate it better (I have two or three other books on Shinto to read). But it is a good way to see how a Shinto prayer service (for lack of better terminology) would go.It does explain how one can do these devotionals alone and how the whole waterfall ceremony works, which was very interesting. I would have to say if you are familiar with Shinto, but unfamiliar with the devotional process, pick this up, it will help. If not, shelve this book until you get more familiar.

Because of this, Phillips doesn't believe trolls can be stopped, not until massive cultural overhaul is made. She says herself that she's been accused of being an apologist for trolls, and it is true that the tone of the book sometimes skirts toward troll sympathizing. Though, overall it is still a very readable, and useable resource. A recommended read for anyone who wants to better understand the internet, especially its wicked underbelly (4chan /b/ specifically).

Well argued and well supported. It was a class read but I really enjoyed it and learning about trolling culture. Informative and a light read.

I found this book after reading the author's excellent op Ed about Donald Trump. The book didn't disappoint. It is a model for how to do rigorous and accessible scholarship on media, and I found it's underlying argument soberly compelling: troll space isn't the antithesis of mainstream American values, but an extreme expression of them. Anyone trying to understand the disturbing dynamic of American politics at present could benefit from this book.

Enlightening work on troll culture with historical and folkloric context which allows the reader to better understand the groups who troll and the communities who are trolled.

Very educational. To be 100% academic, the author shed a great deal of light on a tremendously elusive subject. However, she might have gotten a little too close to the subjects and perhaps is a touch soft handed with them. Apart from that, she's a regular Jane Fossey of the amorphic world of online trolling.

I read this book for research purposes and found much to support and augment my research. Beyond that however, this was such a compelling read! I love history, especially the 19th and 20th centuries, and found her assessment of women and their bodies through that time fascinating. Anorexia is present in my family so there is a personal connection as well. This is not a clinical medical book but a really interesting study of a disease, how knowledge of it has evolved and how it is influenced by certain times in history plus the influence of society. If you are interested in the history of anorexia or, on a broader scope, a unique history of women, I highly recommend this book.

Wonderfully written and consumately researched. Go no further for a history of anorexia nervosa.

If you know someone suffering from an eating disorder and think this problem has only been around since the late 70's, reading this book will be a great eye opener. Very diligent research and well organized information. Gives a great history and background to this troubling issue.

Informative but overly detailed

Thanks to the author for such hard work! Anorexia is a disease causing an increased public interest today and, as a result, fouling a variety of rumors. This book sheds light on various aspects of anorexia - both medical and social phenomenon.

I never knew the history of anorexia nervosa, but it would make sense. Throughout history if someone behaved differently then mainstream society, that behavior needed to be studied and possibly cured. Food was not plentiful in the earlier centuries and that would explain why the woman would go without eating. I was very pleased with the detailed insight of anorexia nervosa. I should not have been surprised though, I have read previous literature from Brumberg and was pleased then.

If you're classically minded, interested in how old houses were put together, and want to continue in the spirit of the way homes were meant to be (sense of place, flow, and feeling - my words, not the author's) then this is a great book for you.This book fits nicely in with other books like Russel Versaci's books (Roots of Home; Creating a New Old House) as well as Tim Tanner's books (Early American Country Interiors, Early American Country Homes)- all recommended reading if you're interested in creating a fine home that makes sense in both appearance and flow.This isn't just a book for old houses; the author walks through how houses were originally laid out, lessons that are applicable still today and often ignored.I checked this out from the library so many times I had to buy it. The only critique I have is that the author hasn't written any other books that I've found. It would be great to hear more from Frank Shirley regarding old homes.

This book is a must read for anybody considering additions for older homes, and want them to be both functional and esthetically appealing. It will be especially helpful for persons planning to do any/all of the design work themselves, but is also useful to formulate ideas in cooperation with an architect. It is very well written, and easily understood by anybody. Many beautiful photographs of homes and additions are used to illustrate the author's suggestions. And Frank Shirley has the experience and credentials to make the work very credible.

This book had some good high level thoughts and examples on what to do with old (pre-1940) houses in terms of additions and what not. It has some useful information on materials that were used and what you might encounter. I would have liked to see it dive down into the details a bit more, but for what it is, it is a pretty solid effort and worthwhile read if you are dealing with or interested in the topic.

My favorite book on fishes since I lived on Anna Maria Island in 1952

Great book for my son who loves to study fish.

This is an old school fish book with lots of interesting stories and facts about fish that most guides don't include. The illustrations are unique. I remember it from when I was a kid and was happy to find it here.

Here is remarkable book with about 4000 entries of fish. Each listing has a back and white drawing of the fish, its name, average size, food value, special features (for example, brilliant yellow tail), feed, and the area of the world where this fish is found.The author states that there are over 400,000 kinds of fish in the world, which are all in any good library of scientific books.For a beginner learning about fish, the fundamentals are set down in this work so as to build a foundation to learn more if desired. A researcher will find answers for many questions throughout this amazing collection of entries. It is very through with hard to find information. For example, the first 13 pages are devoted to sharks-diagram of the parts of a shark with description, illustrations and descriptions of man-eating sharks, large sharks mostly harmless, shallow water sharks, deep water sharks, dangerous sharks, unusual sharks, small sharks, medium sized sharks, and so on. Then there is the section of the ray family, and so on.So much research has gone into this book. At the same time, it is appropriate for any age, for any one with a curiosity to know.

Not only do you see what the fish looks like, you'll know where it haunts, what it feeds on, if it's edible, (food-value) and lots of other intersting information in a concise format (basically, a paragraph or two/three per fish).....Anyway, though I'm only experienced with the fish in this region, the information contained is accurate and useful. I believe from that, you may safely assume that the fishes found elsewhere would have accurate information as well.Continuing, aboard our boat we had numerous books. This (and one other -- Florida Fishing by Gordon Lewis) were the two most frequently referenced fish books we owned. My own copy is ragged, taped together and full of notes. Any copy would be a valuable addition to your collection.Buy it!
