I accidentally purchased this book not knowing there was a basics book that came first. Even though that is the case, I was expecting textbook-like explanations to accounting that I distinctly remember from my classes. It's a nice feeling when someone realizes they need to explain the basics to you, yet they are willing to backtrack to wherever the starting point may be. I still struggle with the CPA terminology and basics, but I would rather read small, casual books than learn from a class or official textbook. Learning accounting outside of school has been much more interesting.

I like how this book gave you the basics of accounting in a easy to understand manner. It went a little further in detail all the while keeping to the point. This book made accounting basics easy to understand for me. A must read for those who are hesitant to jump in to financials and also want to learn more about accounting in their own business. The book includes a lot of examples and bonus chapters. I'm glad I bought it and consider this book an asset. Totally recommend it.

Ideas for the Animated Short - Finding and Building Stories by Karen Sullivan, Gary Schumer and Kate Alexander is a book I was looking forward to reading but had my expectations take a beating right from chapter one. From then on it became a chore to read. Despite that, I persevered and breathed a big sigh of relief when I finally reached the last page.Which was disappointing because I took a long time in choosing what animation book to buy on Amazon as part of a two book purchase that included The Animator's Survival Kit by Richard Williams (a book that is considered an essential in any animator's library).What I was looking for was a lively book on idea development with interesting insights and examples from the various professional animators interviewed. Something that would show a real passion for short story telling, how different creatives approach finding inspiration and how they develop their ideas into a story for short film.What I got in Chapter 1 was a history lesson in story construction, structure, themes and character types presented in a very dry, text book like fashion that made you want to poke your eye out with a pencil when you had to endure this stuff back in your school days. Not surprising, I guess, since all three co-authors are teachers.I'm not saying it wasn't great information. In fact the book and accompanying DVD includes a lot of really good information and some excellent short films by both professionals and students. It's just that much of it doesn't live up to the promise of the book's title. This isn't a book about ideas. It's a book about story structure and the building blocks that make up a short, animated story.Everything is broken down and analyzed... and I'm having a tough time remembering exactly what I read because it was tedious and clinical. It's almost like, at every step of developing a story you should have thought about everything to the 'n'th degree at every step and be able to explain the 'why' of everything present in your story.Why is that character in the story? Why did that character do or say that? Why did you choose that location? Why did that happen and not this?The book seems to forget the most important part of story telling is to just get your ideas down first. Get it all out on the page, into your word processor, script writing software etc. It feels like that's the chapter that is missing. At the heart of story telling, even stories for short films, is the fun of telling a story.All of the other stuff this book covers is information that will help you in telling a story - especially when it comes to revising subsequent drafts but a lot of it is not anything you want to think about at the idea stage. If you did you'd squash many potential ideas before they got off the ground and the rest would get lost under a huge magnifying glass of over analysis.What might have saved this book for me is the interviews with various professional artists and other industry experts at the end of each chapter. Unfortunately the questions asked weren't really what I wanted to know - or I was just so thankful to have finished another chapter I struggled to absorb anything I read in the interviews.Even worse, the industry interviews on the DVD ask the same set of generic questions to seven different professionals that is non-specific to their own work. Making them tedious to read (yes read - not video interviews or even audio only - read. Could have just put them in the book).The DVD does contain a video series of acting examples presented by co author, Kate Alexander (which she covers in more detail the book). These lessons are useful to some degree in creating more realistic emotions for your characters. Though when you look at a lot of comedy, animated shorts they rely heavily on cliche and over the top emotion simply because there isn't the time to be more realistic.Possibly the best part of the book and DVD is the Student animations. There are 16 of these and most include behind the scenes sketches, storyboards, modelling and animatics.According to the Preface this book is intended for beginners, covers the basics and is meant to be easy to read (it's definitely not easy to read). If you are completely new to story telling for short, animated films then it is a fairly solid grounding in everything you need to know. It may even prove useful to more intermediate level short film makers looking for more direction in story analysis.For me, the title is misleading and doesn't really explore ideas at all. It's more focused on considerations derived from common story structures, theory, themes and other building blocks than actual ideas.It's very much a text book that I imagine might be on many animation courses reading lists. After reading through it, I can't say I feel energized and enthusiastic to create short animations. I'm just glad to see the back of it.

Story is king.I've that idea drilled into me after watching the behind-the-scenes documentaries and audio commentary from Pixar movies. I even make mp3 audio files out of the DVDs just to listen to the story!I'm reading this book just to learn more about story structure, to understand what makes a good story. As the title suggest, it's targeted at making animated short films. Most of the story principles work for feature length film as well, as shown through the multiple examples in the book.Chapter 1 talks on the core elements that must exist in a story. It also introduces the basic structure of a story.Chapter 2 is on building content for the story, different ways at looking at the stories, and places to start from when searching for ideas.Chapter 3 is on exploring human emotions and motivations, and how these can be used to create a believable character people can relate to.Chapter 4 is on character and set design. There are tips on creating character profiles, designing appealing characters, building functional location sets.Chapter 5 talks specifically on building a story using the story structure introduced. There are techniques in creating conflict between characters and understanding endings.Chapter 6 explains the role dialogue plays, and how to use it in the story effectively.Chapter 7 and 8 are on storyboarding and staging. There are tips on camera moves, pacing, composition and many other production techniques.Every chapter comes with a lot of examples to emphasis the lesson points. And all these lesson points always go back to building that better story. At the end is always an interview with someone in the animation industry relating back to the chapter's subject.After reading this book, it made me appreciate animated movies even more. Story is king. Audience can never forgive a lousy story, even if the film is lavished with state of the art visual eye candies. Story is the only thing that separates the good from the great.The write up isn't too technical. It explains how storytelling works to people not in the industry. My introduction to Ron Baker was through a four-part webinar series, of the same title, sponsored by Intuit Inc. It was not your typical webinar in the sense that Ron went way beyond any normal expectation in staying and answering the participants questions after the normal end. He was very gracious and detailed in all of his explanations and I suspect that his giving mentality is carried over into all of his consulting and business encounters. This is exactly what you will receive when reading this book. Actually, I didn't just read this book... I thought my way through all 335 pages and probably marked up almost every page! Ron gives you the "why," the theory, behind all the "how to" which allows the reader to build their own foundation in restructuring their own business model. We are talking about going from the model where you are selling time to a model where you are giving the client the freedom to placing a value on the outcome of what they will receive from you. This is radical... and it will allow the opportunity to make greater profits than anything that is time based. In fact, your old billable hour becomes the "floor" and not the "ceiling" on any of your new engagements.If you are serious about making an impact in the businesses and lives of your clients then the antiquated "billable-hour" and the "time-sheets" have to go out of your thinking! If any of you hesitated or had to re-read this last sentence then get this book and convince yourself that this radically different approach to doing business is something that you should have done a long time ago. You are no longer a Professional Service Firm, selling services and time, you are now a Professional Knowledge Firm, creating "value" for your customers and giving them an upfront fixed price that they can count on and budget for.In every transaction you have to consider three things: costs, price, and value delivered. No customer will ever care about your costs! Then consider that your customer is determined to get the lowest price for your services, while you are striving to get the highest price possible, so there is no common ground here. The only area where there is common ground is in value delivered. Both you and your customer are striving, in the same direction, to achieve the best value out of that transaction! If you desire to become a master at squeezing every ounce of value out of your engagements then it would be a serious mistake to forfeit learning what Ron Baker has to share in this book.Your clients will be so filled with gratitude that they will not have any reason to look elsewhere because no one listens as well or solves their problems like you do, at a price that they are more than willing to pay!

Not that this book needs another five star review, but I have a reason for chiming in. I was reading Ron's books starting around 2005 or so, and while I loved the way they made me think about everything. After writing five books that I know of, Ron produced this work, which summarizes everything from previous books and offers a hands-on approach to his value pricing model.Now, Ron is an accountant. This means you have to be able to think about what he is saying in your own context. He cannot give you your context, only his own. This doesn't make what he says any less useful in any professional service. The idea of value creation as a measure of company plus customer profit, and how to apply this concept to define price, is applicable to anyone who uses their brain to make money. On a trip to China I had the opportunity to read from start to finish Ron Baker's Implementing Value Pricing book. Early on, as I read each page, I got the sensation that "I hope this book doesn't end!" The "theories" outlined in this prose are radical and very intelligently conveyed, allowing the reader to grasp these concepts in a methodical manner. As a person with a CI (continuous improvement) ideology of how to approach business (and life), I was enamored with the blend of rational and sensible concepts as delivered by Mr. Baker. Pricing time indeed makes no sense. It is NOT what the customer demands. The Customer demands service and results. Providing a Customer a price up front is respectful and professional. We want them to call us to help them with their needs, not worry about that sinking feeling of calling my advisor and watching the clock.Beyond that, tracking time is wasteful (highly against CI principals). It is inexact and therefore meaningless. As Ron shared with me, we already know our cost. Can't we be smart enough to build a business model that ensures a healthy profit. If we can't, we are in the wrong business. I've just started a new Outsourced Accounting Business. Our goal is to make our value proposition (at premium prices) so that our Customers see us as a necessity in their business and highly dependent on the value we bring to the table. I can assure you I will read this book at least 2 more times. It's like a great movie, you'll catch other insights the more you watch (read) it!I cannot praise Ron enough for delivering to us in the "professions" a mantra of which to follow as we forge forward helping our Customers succeed!Thank you again, Ron.

What a thorough, logical, thought-provoking read. The book takes you through a useful, logical path of reasoning: defining the problem with hourly billing (even considering the positives and the history behind it), why consumers buy anything, and replaces your current knowledge of what you believe is possible with pricing a customer based on services and gives you tools, processes, ideas, and case studies to help you visualize and reason through / unlearn what you currently know about time-sheets. I've never left a review before, but this book calls for it - I would say as a CPA that this should be required reading, at least so you can affirm your beliefs of what you are offering or can offer your clients. It's a wake-up call the industry needs. I had never read a Ron Baker book before, but I'm sold on his ability to provide careful, sound reasoning behind his arguments. Well worth the time and investment.

Downs, a political scientist, doesn't rant. Instead, he considers the ability of these defenses to increase society's awareness of the special fears of individuals "subjected to violence and related forms of abuse on a sustained basis." But he also discusses their failings, focusing primarily on battered-woman syndrome. Relying on a BWS defense, he argues repeatedly, signals an incapacity to employ reason and take responsibility. And when one is officially labeled incapable of being responsible in one context, an individual may "surrender the benefits that accrue to bearing responsibility in another context." Women found to have been afflicted by BWS have fared badly in child custody hearings, he notes. Based on interviews with battered women, experts in the field and prodigious research, Downs concludes that BWS-based defenses are unable to help women who kill in nonconfrontational situations. He suggests reforming the key standards, such as a more flexible standard for imminence along the lines of that used for kidnapping cases, in the law of self-defense. This reasonably accessible work takes the reader through a careful analysis of various syndromes, a legal critique of BWS, and examines the syndrome society from the vantage of political theory and citizenship. A battered woman is not once assaulted and then turns to the legal system that provides protection and assistance. Instead they enter an adversarial system that too often complicates the picture. They not only are left with post traumatic stress disorder, the batterer is usually a coercive controller that dominates finances, uses power games, and can use the court system against the victim. This adds a societal moral injury to the already victimized spouse. We need more works like More Than Victims bringing greater awareness of the layers of difficulties these women face. Congress gave us a gift in the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act that protects those with disabilities especially PTSD during legal proceedings. About the Author

Mark L. Knapp is the Jesse H. Jones Centennial Professor Emeritus and a Distinguished Teaching Professor Emeritus at the University of Texas at Austin. He was the editor of Human Communication Research (1980-83); an Eastern Communication Association Scholar (1982-83); an ICA Fellow (1980); and an NCA Distinguished Scholar. The Mark L. Knapp Award for career contributions to the study of interpersonal communication is awarded annually by the National Communication Association. He received teaching awards from two professional associations and four different universities. He was the President of ICA (1975-76); NCA (1989-90); the Association for Communication Administrators (1996-97); and the University of Texas chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi honor society (2001-03). He chaired the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Texas from 1989-1996 and 2000-2001. Amazing book!!!! Very informative and an interesting read for personal use.

The book was the correct book, however, it came in very poor condition. After I returned it I was charged the fu; price of the book stating it was returned in poor condition.

I have the paperback version of this excellent book, and wanted to be able to have it available as a reference during my travels. Much to my disappointment, this is not a Kindle book per se; instead, it is more like a PDF file. You cannot adjust the font (either style or size). You cannot highlight sections of the text. In sum, you cannot interact with this book the way you can with "true" Kindle books.I wish I could offer two separate ratings: one for content and one for format. If I could, I would give it a five-star rating for the former and a one-star rating for the latter. Since I don't have the option, I've opted for the middle of the road three-star rating.This format issue should be clearly noted on the Amazon page featuring this book.

This is my 5th Drummond spy/thriller by Brain Haig, admittedly my favorite! I emensly enjoy Haig's style: Drummond, his JAG hero, is smart, resourceful, gutsy and full of humor. But the best part of Haig's hero is his mild, chauvinistic, conservative humor, which Haig shares with the reader mostly throughout each book. Mostly, I mean, probably 60-70% of each book is an extensive description of Drummond's humorous thoughts. As in all other Drummond series, Sean is forced to team up with a beautiful, but uncommonly conniving female partner, with whom he has to share trust and more than often mistrust. In Man in the Middle, the scene is the post-war days in Iraq, the messy circumstances facing the US Army with terrorists attacks and fumbled US politic as portrays by Phyllis his CIA boss and her superiors.

I am a fan of Nelson DeMille's John Corey books. After having read them all several times, I was ready to move on to a new author. Looking around the internet, I found several sites that recommended Brian Haig, suggesting that he was witty and sarcastic (much like DeMille's character).What I found was nothing short of amazing. Haig's writing is more exciting, better paced, and sometimes even more witty and clever than DeMille's. I ate up all of Haig's books in a matter of days, and will be hard-pressed to find an author I like more.This book (part murder mystery, part political intrigue, part legal thriller) involves the main character's (Lt. Col. Sean Drummond) investigation into a murder in Washington, D.C. that might have political ramifications. As he investigates, he becomes embroiled in a politically charged intrigue that takes him from D.C. deep into the heart of the war in Iraq.Having read my share of mystery's from Poe, Agatha Christie and Conan Doyle all the way to other modern writers like DeMille and Michael Connelly, I am often disappointed when authors give too much away or depend too much on cliche's. I often take bets with myself about who did it or why, and sadly I'm often right.This book, however, has some completely unexpected twists and turns before finding out who did it and why.I highly recommend it.

I pride myself on being able to solve most mysteries on my own as the plot develops. However, plot twist at the end really tricked me. Great read written by a writer that really understands the military and politicians. I believe this story is probably very close to the truth except for the murders that underlay the plot. Not that the government is not capable of murder to cover incredible bad decisions.

The third book I've read of Brian Haig's character, Sean Drummond. Naturally I've compared this one to those 2 and felt that it comes up a little short of the other 2. Don't get me wrong it was still very enjoyable but I felt the storyline struggled just a little and laboured about 2 thirds through. Having said that I'm still up for the nextBrian Haig one I'm going to read.

I love Brian Haig's sense of humor. His character Sean Drummond has a dry wit that makes me laugh out loud. His plots are informative and plausible. This is the 2nd book I had read of his, and I look forward to reading all of his books. I don't remember the last time I enjoyed an author's style so much. If Brian Haig ever does a book signing in Los Angeles, I would be there, just to meet the real "Sean Drummond" in person.

My recommendation is to buy it, enjoy it, and then read some of his other books like Private Sector, The Kingmaker, and the President's Assassin to see what he is capable of delivering.My guess is that the long delay in the book's release had something to do with editing from a government source because a lot of the inside element in his previous books was what I missed in The Man In The Middle.On the other hand even Martin Cruz Smith (Night Wing), Nelson DeMille (The Generals Daughter) and even Clancy (Clear and Present Danger) had a clunker or two: perhaps when they were trying something slightly different or were just tired of working on it.Nonetheless Brian Haig is still on my A list: Martin Cruz Smith, Michael Connelly, Clancy (if he ever starts writing on his own again), Pat Conroy (I hope that he writes another one), Grisham, and Turow: I put Haig just above Baldacci.

Once again, Haig writes a page turner that is a spy novel, political thriller and whodunnit with the brilliant sarcasm his protagonist, Sean Drummond, does like no other. I've read this one twice and was awestruck twice by the shocking truth revealed at the climax.

I LOVE Brian Haig. He is one of my very favorite authors. Sean Drummond is just a wonderful character. Kind of a smartass and the repartee with the other characters is always good for a little chuckle. I am now reading his newest (The Night Crew) and it is a really fun read. It also makes me wonder how much of the story line is true as the author is a Washington insider.

The Barnes Museum was frought with many challenges. This book goes into detail of all the people who egos and political hunger got in the way of celebrating, promoting and protecting the art. It was sad to see the seaming corruption in my home town so clearly presented. The author did a lot of home work. He worked hard to be a respectful finger pointer.The new museum which has a much more accessible location Ihas all of the problems of the original location in terms of standing back to look at the art. The rooms are small, the guests are plentiful and you can't step far enough back to fully take in the work. The new museum on the Parkway is a contemporary building with the old Barnes house architecturally rebuilt within it. It would have been interesting to the general public to learn more about the dynamics behind that.I also kept expecting to hear from the author with more strength state that the public, the investors and the judges if I remember correctly were fed up with all the ongoing expensive litigation that seemed so constant in it's old location under the control of the Lincoln College.This book was definitely an interning read. I would recommend it.

I heard about Art Held Hostage on a radio talk show and had to head straight to Amazon to get it.I was fortunate to get to see the Barnes Collection when it came to Fort Worth years ago and to read of the real history of the collection was like completing the full circle of knowledge.I have read another book of some art collections but this one really stands above others, being specifically of a collection I really enjoy.The background maneuvering to build the collection was interesting and obtaining the various pieces of art makes for an intriguing read

Interesting story but poorly written and goes off on tangents

Great story about the fighting around the Barnes Collection, with numerous details, cases, etc. Not so much about the collection itself.Still, an easy and enjoyable read.

After seeing the documentary The Art of the Steal i wanted to read about the details. This book is excellent and dives even deeper on this shocking situation. I recommend seeing the documentary first and then reading the book.

I delighted in reading about a cultural hero.

For anyone interested in art collections, the story behind the Barnes and its recent history make fascinating reading. Kept me interested.

I absolutely loved this book. I have read many stories detailing the horrors Jews faced throughout Europe before, during, and after World War II....and expected this story to be similar. It was different...I connected with it far more that other stories of the same genre. Perhaps knowing it was based on the author's family made it all the more moving. It is a book that I finished a few weeks ago, but cannot stop talking about to friends and family. It is a story that has stayed with me. I highly recommend!

I will start with the dislikes, move on to the likes, and my own personal thoughts.What did I dislike about this novel?Absolutely NOTHING.What did I like about this novel?1. The characters. Even though I know it's based on a true story, I enjoyed the characters.2. It made me cry, laugh, and cry a ton.3. Finding out more about what the Jewish community really went through in order to survive.4. Well-written. Hats off to Mrs. Hunter. I'm an instant fan.5. The careful research that went into making this a novel.6. The patience Mrs. Hunter must have had. Not many writers want to talk about their family's history. It takes so much time to research and fact-check. Kudos to Mrs. Hunter.7. The ending and the acknowledgement. For the first time, I feel completely satisfied and that's hard to achieve.Now for my personal thoughts.What are you waiting for? Go buy this book already! It will make you laugh, cry, cry some more and it will keep you on the edge of your seat. I won't give anything away. You have to be willing to have a box of tissues nearby. It also makes me thing of my ancestors. What they went through to make it this far. Would I ever write about my family's history? No. I don't have the patience. We cannot deny the painful part of our prior history. We need to learn from it and do better as each generation passes. I cried, I honestly did. It made my stomach churn and drop. But this is a book about sacrifice and love. I know as a mother, I would do anything to save my children. But this family is simply remarkable. Yeah, maybe some parts were dramatized but Mrs. Hunter took me there. I could imagine the horrors her family went through. If this book doesn't make you feel something, I don't know what else to tell you. I plan on buying this book on hardcover and it will remain a treasure for the rest of my life. What we need is a whole lot more love in this world and a lot less hate. Thank you, Mrs. Hunter. Bless you and your beautiful family. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your story. I'm sure it was painful for her to write this. I could only imagine.

I would normally avoid a book written about this dark period of history. But I absolutely loved We Were The Lucky Ones. Beautifully written and fast paced. Each chapter is filled with hope and the amazing strength of spirit of each character. I finished it last night and I found myself thinking about the Kurc family several times today. Terrific read!!

Maybe I wasn’t paying enough attention up front, but when I embarked upon this book I was expecting to read a story that would have fallen into the genre of “historical fiction,” i.e. a fictional account of a fictional family told against the backdrop of the all-too-real canvas of World War II. What I got instead was the astounding, near unbelievable, TRUE account of a Polish-Jewish family’s miraculous survival during this darkest time in human history. It is not until the epilogue/“Author’s Note” that we learn that the author’s Grandfather was in fact one of the main characters in her remarkable story.The author acknowledges that her family elders, quite understandably so, were not eager to discuss the horrors of their past. Given the sparsity of details that were handed down to her, I imagine that a good amount of this epic tale can be chalked up to poetic license, so to speak, and that the writing of this tome entailed a good deal of “fleshing out” of a very skeletal handed-down (and oftentimes not first-hand) account. Nevertheless, the essence of this tale is true, and nothing short of miraculous, awe-inspiring and, indeed, life-affirming.The protagonists here are Sol and Nechuma Kurc, their five young-adult children and their respective spouses. The story unfolds all over the far-flung corners of the globe during and after the Second World War: Poland, France, Siberia, Palestine, Argentina and, lastly, the United States. (Keeping track of the many main characters may have been a bit unwieldy, but the author handily provides a family tree at the book’s beginning, which I found myself consulting time after time.)The aspects of this story that moved me most deeply were:First, one cannot read this book without being struck by the perseverance and determination of the family members to provide for one another and simply to survive at the most elemental level during times of starvation, extreme weather, persecution and all the other privations of war-torn Europe. To say that We Were the Lucky Ones is a testament to the human spirit is to state the obvious.Second, the love this family held for one another and the cohesiveness of the family unit – especially when all else was lost – was something that really touched me. There is a not-so-very subtle message here about what matters most in life. The instances of self-sacrifice (Halina for her parents and Mila for her daughter, to name just a couple) are particularly noteworthy.Third, the family, having immigrated to the Unites States immediately post-war, made the utmost of their lives here, all going on to become successful in their chosen spheres. It strikes me that, as clichéd as it may sound, America is truly the land of opportunity for those who are willing to make it happen. As an American whose own Grandparents came here from Europe, I have to say that the author’s choice to bring this out brought a lump to my throat.I don’t know if it’s even possible to describe a Holocaust story as having a happy ending, but if it is at all possible – considering the devastating losses to the world and to humanity at large - this family’s story had one. In fact, the book lightly touches upon the concept of survivor’s guilt: Toward the end of the book one of the characters muses about how none of them should have survived, and yet (against the odds) all of them did. They were the lucky ones….A word about the unspeakably brave souls who harbored the hunted: people like Halina’s boss who was willing to vouch for her (on more than one occasion), or like the peasant family who hid Sol and Nachuma behind a false wall in their home, or the Mother Superior who ran an orphanage and who was willing to accept the falsehood that little Felicia was “Aryan” in order to spare her life. To paraphrase a sentiment of Anne Frank’s: despite everything, there truly are good people in this world. In a world gone mad, these courageous individuals are true heroes.The sanctity of life and the belief that life is something worth fighting for are not new concepts to Holocaust literature. This book ranks right up there with the best in the lessons it has to impart.All in all, edge-of-your-seat story-telling, with an extremely poignant ending. Definitely recommended.

Rather, based on a full awareness of the issues in the text, he seeks to expound the text properly incorporating some illustrations and application.In this way Davis provides a model for preaching from First Kings - a task which often appears quite daunting. On the one hand he does not get bogged down in details failing to get to what God is actually saying in the text and what we are to do about it. On the other hand he shows that carefully reading the text is necessary in order to grasp what God is saying rather than reading in whatever we want to find. I especially appreciate his sensitivity to structure and flow of thought as well as his careful connections across the covenants.I think pastors will find this volume very helpful in the task of preaching (The Founders Journal)... The Gospel Coalition blog has been rating commentaries, and this one got a very high rating. Since I'm starting a sermon series on Elijah, I got a copy from Amazon. I was surprised, as it is not a typical scholarly/academic commentary, yet it is filled with pastoral insight. Not a lightweight "devotional" commentary, yet one that you'll want to read for the wisdom and exegetical gems gleaned from the text. If you're looking for an analysis of the Hebrew text, go to the Word Biblical Commentary. If you want to understand what the text has to say to real people, this commentary is invaluable. I'd also give high marks to the New American Commentary vol 8 (I & II Kings) by Paul R. House (B&H).

This commentary is wise, pastoral, interesting, and even funny. The picture is just a random sample to give you an idea of the way Ralph Davis writes. I highly recommend anything he has had published. Very helpful. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed in any of Davis' commentaries.

This book by DRD was a tremendous although accidental find for me. I was preaching through the life of Elijah in the summer of 2015 and got this book on the second message or so that I preached. DRD does some excellent background into the history surrounding Elijah and his interactions with Elisha, Ahab, and Jezebel. I would recommend it for anyone who is a preacher or just for personal devotional work.

Davis is a skilled expository with a solid view of Scripture. He takes the text as presented instead of twisting it to reflect modern sensibility. His humor and wit allow him to stand apart from other conservative commentators as he explains the text with knowledge and applies it to everyday life.

Another excellent commentary from Dale Ralph Davis. I absolutely devour his books and consequently have tons of notes written all over the margins of my Bible. Great book from a great teacher--and it helps that he gets me laughing while he's teaching!

This is a commentary that brings many other commentator's to the table, both pro and con to Davis' position. Davis makes the reader so very aware of what is afoot over the vast span of time that 1 Kings covers, and that is what happens when mankind, meddles in 1st commandment stuff. This is timeless in its teaching. Man refusing to believe that God has spoken, that we are to have no other gods before us. When writing of Solomon, Davis notes, "The text is not interested in Solomon's politics but in his affections." This is true for all the characters that follow. When Davis writes, "the problem is not wealth or luxury or high handedness or wisdom or popularity or renown or splendor or achievement but other gods. First commandment stuff," he summarizes the problem and the issue for mankind. This teaching is timeless in its truth. God is sovereign and when we meddle in First Commandment stuff what happens is, and I quote Davis: "What happens when one make first commandment compromises? One meets the anger of the Lord." I highly recommend this book.

Dale Davis has very good insights. I have loved his commentary. Very applicable to life today.

If you have never read Ralph Davis' commentaries, you are missing a real treat! He has a depth of insight and the way he applies the Scriptures is truly fantastic. His academic ability is shown, but he does not over power you with it. His OT commentaries are great for Bible study and seeing how an ancient text applies in the 21st century. If you don't own them, you need to get them today.
