From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2–The adventures of the lovable black Labrador continue. Huneck's bold and folksy woodcut prints convey a droll sense of humor and dog's-eye view of the world. In this tale, Sally plays chasing games with her friend, Bingo, the cat. When she is injured, her human rushes her to the vet. When she gets home she cuddles with Bingo to tell her about the veterinary escapade. Huneck manages to infuse some humor into this potentially traumatic episode. He also portrays the doctor visit in such a way that kids should feel reassured by it. Animal lovers and Sally's fans will appreciate this offering.–Be Astengo, Alachua County Library, Gainesville, FL Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist
PreS-Gr. 2. The irrepressible canine star of three previous adventures (trips to the beach, farm, and mountains) now faces a dreaded trip to the vet. The brief text, narrated in black lab Sally's voice, relates how she fell over a tree stump and hurt herself while chasing her friend Bingo the cat. Her x-ray shows no broken bones, so Sally is allowed to go home and take her medicine. It's the oversize woodcut prints in Huneck's signature folk-art style that make the book memorable. In the clever pictures, humans are represented only by hands and feet and an occasional torso (no faces), and close-ups, such as one showing a tongue depressor approaching Sally's open mouth, allow kids to look right over the vet's shoulder, making Sally's experience more immediate. Burnt orange and yellow backgrounds (and an orange-colored Bingo) contrast nicely with Sally's black shape, which is speckled with fine white lines that give the illusion of hairs. It's an attractively designed tribute to vets that both dog lovers and Sally's fans will like. Julie CumminsCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

This was a gift to our vet, who has compassionately and tirelessly cared for our many pets over the years. He and his staff loved paging through it, and he took it home for his teenagers to enjoy before putting it among the reading materials in his waiting room. The charming and witty illustrations appeal to all ages, not just the little kids. It is a dear story with some great advice for us all.
Sally Goes to the Vet is just one of the delightful stories by Stephen Huneck. It is a perfect gift to keep on hand for a quick gift to a child. It is also appropriate for any child with a pet.
I used this book to do a presentation at a pre-school - the kids LOVED it. It was a great segue into demonstrating what we do in an examination room as well as their responsibilities as a pet owner. The age group was 3-5 years old and they loved the images - especially Bingo chasing Sally. I recommend this to all of my colleagues to have for visitors to their clinics and to specialty toy stores to carry as part of their library.
perfect
I have a black lab that looks just like Sally. She is a therapy dog and goes to two elementary schools a week. The children that read to her love the Sally books. It is amazing the concern they have for Sally and their interest and questions about going to the vet.

I come from a family of dog lovers and the Sally books are hands down the best. They are beautifully illustrated and the story lines truly capture the thinking and behaviors of man's best friend. Stephen Huneck was a genius and it saddens me that he is no longer with us. I hope his friends and family know how much his stories have touched the lives of me and my children. Buy these books and share the joy and love of having a relationship with a pet with your children.
I love the books about Sally. I have a Black Lab and can relate to every story told by Stephen Huneck. I can appreciate the effort in the artwork, too. I'm picking up my dog at the Vet tomorrow and am taking the book with me to share with them.
