What a great book! My daughter picked this book as a bday donation for her school library. She got to keep it for 2 wks and literally read it everyday. The pages are nice, glossy, clear, the photos are gorgeous! The size of the book is a hair bigger than a 5x7 photo. She just loves using the index & looking up different species of birds & then finding them in the book to learn about them. We love that they're broken out according to type of birds, like birds of prey for example. She likes the beginning section pages that give a quick summary of the section, for example she'll say "Mom did you know there is 47 species of toucan's?!" That's not an actual fact, I'm generalizing, but she likes to read about the specific qualities of the grouping of birds she's reading about. She has read this book several pages at a time every single day for 2 wks. It is written for an adult, but not too grown up that it's impossible for her to read. The only words she has trouble with are the class/species type words that are tough and a random word in between that she's unfamiliar with.

I'd seen a copy of this book in my local public library, so I was able to determine that it adequately covered the subject before I purchased it. I was pleased that it surveyed birds found worldwide, not only in North America. Also, I knew of David Burnie from other books he'd written, so I was confident in the accuracy of this guide. And, as with all DK titles, it is profusely illustrated. The only fault I can cite is that it doesn't list all families of the orders covered.

This is a great book with some awesome photos. My five year old is in love with all birds and we checked this out at the library and we had to have it for our collection. She we bought it for Christmas and she carried it around for weeks showing us all the different birds. My 17 year old seemed to like it as well.

Great pictures. Book is easy to use. My son (7years) loves looking at it. Text is advanced for him, but he still loves it.

My preschooler was exposed to this book at his school and asked me to buy him his own copy. It's not at all a book geared to kids, but he loves the large pictures and enjoys listening to the descriptions. The book is well organized and concise - it's one of the better general bird guides I have seen.

My 8 year old loves this book.

This 353 page book is not a bird watcher's guide, although yes it has lovely pictures that you could identify birds with. What it is, is a textbook on birds.There are sections on anatomy, flight, migration and breeding(in the wild), habitats, there are 2 pages on bird watching and identification. The major part of the book is a species guide.The pages are glossy and easy to look at, each page in colour with excellent drawings and sometimes small photos. There is a profile chart, similar species and a paragraph or two about the bird.If you wish to learn more about birds or are an experienced, detailed bird watcher then this book would be right for you.

The book provides a general coverage of Kafka's architecture and internal working.It details many configuration parameters that affect clustering, replication, message delivery.It also offers valuable material for system administrators who need to manage and monitor a running cluster.It's not very good for programmers: Java API coverage is partial and inadequate.The chapters are uncoordinated and poorly integrated with some repeated material.Many errors in the code samples and the text.Chapters 3, 4, and 11 discuss the programming API.The first two deal with message producers and consumers, present the Java API for publishing and consuming messages and discuss delivery semantics. They also detail configuration options that can be used to customize message producers and consumers. Security and access control is mentioned but never really discussed. There is not a single full program that can be run but several snippets full of errors.Chapter 11 offers a tutorial introduction to stream processing: what it is and what problems it solves. Three code examples illustrate Kafka Streams, the Stream framework that comes with Kafka and provides a high level abstraction for manipulating data streams. I accidentally purchased this book not knowing there was a basics book that came first. Even though that is the case, I was expecting textbook-like explanations to accounting that I distinctly remember from my classes. It's a nice feeling when someone realizes they need to explain the basics to you, yet they are willing to backtrack to wherever the starting point may be. I still struggle with the CPA terminology and basics, but I would rather read small, casual books than learn from a class or official textbook. Learning accounting outside of school has been much more interesting.

I like how this book gave you the basics of accounting in a easy to understand manner. It went a little further in detail all the while keeping to the point. This book made accounting basics easy to understand for me. A must read for those who are hesitant to jump in to financials and also want to learn more about accounting in their own business. The book includes a lot of examples and bonus chapters. I'm glad I bought it and consider this book an asset. Totally recommend it.

Very well written. Simple and to the point in the language the average person can understand with clear and concise examples.

Ideas for the Animated Short - Finding and Building Stories by Karen Sullivan, Gary Schumer and Kate Alexander is a book I was looking forward to reading but had my expectations take a beating right from chapter one. From then on it became a chore to read. Despite that, I persevered and breathed a big sigh of relief when I finally reached the last page.Which was disappointing because I took a long time in choosing what animation book to buy on Amazon as part of a two book purchase that included The Animator's Survival Kit by Richard Williams (a book that is considered an essential in any animator's library).What I was looking for was a lively book on idea development with interesting insights and examples from the various professional animators interviewed. Something that would show a real passion for short story telling, how different creatives approach finding inspiration and how they develop their ideas into a story for short film.What I got in Chapter 1 was a history lesson in story construction, structure, themes and character types presented in a very dry, text book like fashion that made you want to poke your eye out with a pencil when you had to endure this stuff back in your school days. Not surprising, I guess, since all three co-authors are teachers.I'm not saying it wasn't great information. In fact the book and accompanying DVD includes a lot of really good information and some excellent short films by both professionals and students. It's just that much of it doesn't live up to the promise of the book's title. This isn't a book about ideas. It's a book about story structure and the building blocks that make up a short, animated story.Everything is broken down and analyzed... and I'm having a tough time remembering exactly what I read because it was tedious and clinical. It's almost like, at every step of developing a story you should have thought about everything to the 'n'th degree at every step and be able to explain the 'why' of everything present in your story.Why is that character in the story? Why did that character do or say that? Why did you choose that location? Why did that happen and not this?The book seems to forget the most important part of story telling is to just get your ideas down first. Get it all out on the page, into your word processor, script writing software etc. It feels like that's the chapter that is missing. At the heart of story telling, even stories for short films, is the fun of telling a story.All of the other stuff this book covers is information that will help you in telling a story - especially when it comes to revising subsequent drafts but a lot of it is not anything you want to think about at the idea stage. If you did you'd squash many potential ideas before they got off the ground and the rest would get lost under a huge magnifying glass of over analysis.What might have saved this book for me is the interviews with various professional artists and other industry experts at the end of each chapter. Unfortunately the questions asked weren't really what I wanted to know - or I was just so thankful to have finished another chapter I struggled to absorb anything I read in the interviews.Even worse, the industry interviews on the DVD ask the same set of generic questions to seven different professionals that is non-specific to their own work. Making them tedious to read (yes read - not video interviews or even audio only - read. Could have just put them in the book).The DVD does contain a video series of acting examples presented by co author, Kate Alexander (which she covers in more detail the book). These lessons are useful to some degree in creating more realistic emotions for your characters. Though when you look at a lot of comedy, animated shorts they rely heavily on cliche and over the top emotion simply because there isn't the time to be more realistic.Possibly the best part of the book and DVD is the Student animations. There are 16 of these and most include behind the scenes sketches, storyboards, modelling and animatics.According to the Preface this book is intended for beginners, covers the basics and is meant to be easy to read (it's definitely not easy to read). If you are completely new to story telling for short, animated films then it is a fairly solid grounding in everything you need to know. It may even prove useful to more intermediate level short film makers looking for more direction in story analysis.For me, the title is misleading and doesn't really explore ideas at all. It's more focused on considerations derived from common story structures, theory, themes and other building blocks than actual ideas.It's very much a text book that I imagine might be on many animation courses reading lists. After reading through it, I can't say I feel energized and enthusiastic to create short animations. I'm just glad to see the back of it.

Story is king.I've that idea drilled into me after watching the behind-the-scenes documentaries and audio commentary from Pixar movies. I even make mp3 audio files out of the DVDs just to listen to the story!I'm reading this book just to learn more about story structure, to understand what makes a good story. As the title suggest, it's targeted at making animated short films. Most of the story principles work for feature length film as well, as shown through the multiple examples in the book.Chapter 1 talks on the core elements that must exist in a story. It also introduces the basic structure of a story.Chapter 2 is on building content for the story, different ways at looking at the stories, and places to start from when searching for ideas.Chapter 3 is on exploring human emotions and motivations, and how these can be used to create a believable character people can relate to.Chapter 4 is on character and set design. There are tips on creating character profiles, designing appealing characters, building functional location sets.Chapter 5 talks specifically on building a story using the story structure introduced. There are techniques in creating conflict between characters and understanding endings.Chapter 6 explains the role dialogue plays, and how to use it in the story effectively.Chapter 7 and 8 are on storyboarding and staging. There are tips on camera moves, pacing, composition and many other production techniques.Every chapter comes with a lot of examples to emphasis the lesson points. And all these lesson points always go back to building that better story. At the end is always an interview with someone in the animation industry relating back to the chapter's subject.After reading this book, it made me appreciate animated movies even more. Story is king. Audience can never forgive a lousy story, even if the film is lavished with state of the art visual eye candies. Story is the only thing that separates the good from the great.The write up isn't too technical. It explains how storytelling works to people not in the industry. My introduction to Ron Baker was through a four-part webinar series, of the same title, sponsored by Intuit Inc. It was not your typical webinar in the sense that Ron went way beyond any normal expectation in staying and answering the participants questions after the normal end. He was very gracious and detailed in all of his explanations and I suspect that his giving mentality is carried over into all of his consulting and business encounters. This is exactly what you will receive when reading this book. Actually, I didn't just read this book... I thought my way through all 335 pages and probably marked up almost every page! Ron gives you the "why," the theory, behind all the "how to" which allows the reader to build their own foundation in restructuring their own business model. We are talking about going from the model where you are selling time to a model where you are giving the client the freedom to placing a value on the outcome of what they will receive from you. This is radical... and it will allow the opportunity to make greater profits than anything that is time based. In fact, your old billable hour becomes the "floor" and not the "ceiling" on any of your new engagements.If you are serious about making an impact in the businesses and lives of your clients then the antiquated "billable-hour" and the "time-sheets" have to go out of your thinking! If any of you hesitated or had to re-read this last sentence then get this book and convince yourself that this radically different approach to doing business is something that you should have done a long time ago. You are no longer a Professional Service Firm, selling services and time, you are now a Professional Knowledge Firm, creating "value" for your customers and giving them an upfront fixed price that they can count on and budget for.In every transaction you have to consider three things: costs, price, and value delivered. No customer will ever care about your costs! Then consider that your customer is determined to get the lowest price for your services, while you are striving to get the highest price possible, so there is no common ground here. The only area where there is common ground is in value delivered. Both you and your customer are striving, in the same direction, to achieve the best value out of that transaction! If you desire to become a master at squeezing every ounce of value out of your engagements then it would be a serious mistake to forfeit learning what Ron Baker has to share in this book.Your clients will be so filled with gratitude that they will not have any reason to look elsewhere because no one listens as well or solves their problems like you do, at a price that they are more than willing to pay!

Not that this book needs another five star review, but I have a reason for chiming in. I was reading Ron's books starting around 2005 or so, and while I loved the way they made me think about everything. After writing five books that I know of, Ron produced this work, which summarizes everything from previous books and offers a hands-on approach to his value pricing model.Now, Ron is an accountant. This means you have to be able to think about what he is saying in your own context. He cannot give you your context, only his own. This doesn't make what he says any less useful in any professional service. The idea of value creation as a measure of company plus customer profit, and how to apply this concept to define price, is applicable to anyone who uses their brain to make money. And there are many ways to think of a fabrication company as a professional service provider, so no one is entirely excluded.Another selling point for this book is that this is where the nuts-and-bolts of value pricing ended up after all revisions of The Professional's Guide to Value Pricing went out of print. So if you missed that one entirely, if you're new to Ron's work, or if you're a professional looking to radically rethink how you and your company create value, get this book.

On a trip to China I had the opportunity to read from start to finish Ron Baker's Implementing Value Pricing book. Early on, as I read each page, I got the sensation that "I hope this book doesn't end!" The "theories" outlined in this prose are radical and very intelligently conveyed, allowing the reader to grasp these concepts in a methodical manner. As a person with a CI (continuous improvement) ideology of how to approach business (and life), I was enamored with the blend of rational and sensible concepts as delivered by Mr. Baker. Pricing time indeed makes no sense. It is NOT what the customer demands. The Customer demands service and results. Providing a Customer a price up front is respectful and professional. We want them to call us to help them with their needs, not worry about that sinking feeling of calling my advisor and watching the clock.Beyond that, tracking time is wasteful (highly against CI principals). It is inexact and therefore meaningless. As Ron shared with me, we already know our cost. Can't we be smart enough to build a business model that ensures a healthy profit. If we can't, we are in the wrong business. I've just started a new Outsourced Accounting Business. Our goal is to make our value proposition (at premium prices) so that our Customers see us as a necessity in their business and highly dependent on the value we bring to the table. I can assure you I will read this book at least 2 more times. It's like a great movie, you'll catch other insights the more you watch (read) it!I cannot praise Ron enough for delivering to us in the "professions" a mantra of which to follow as we forge forward helping our Customers succeed!Thank you again, Ron.

What a thorough, logical, thought-provoking read. The book takes you through a useful, logical path of reasoning: defining the problem with hourly billing (even considering the positives and the history behind it), why consumers buy anything, and replaces your current knowledge of what you believe is possible with pricing a customer based on services and gives you tools, processes, ideas, and case studies to help you visualize and reason through / unlearn what you currently know about time-sheets. I've never left a review before, but this book calls for it - I would say as a CPA that this should be required reading, at least so you can affirm your beliefs of what you are offering or can offer your clients. It's a wake-up call the industry needs. I had never read a Ron Baker book before, but I'm sold on his ability to provide careful, sound reasoning behind his arguments. Well worth the time and investment.

Instead, he considers the ability of these defenses to increase society's awareness of the special fears of individuals "subjected to violence and related forms of abuse on a sustained basis." But he also discusses their failings, focusing primarily on battered-woman syndrome. Relying on a BWS defense, he argues repeatedly, signals an incapacity to employ reason and take responsibility. And when one is officially labeled incapable of being responsible in one context, an individual may "surrender the benefits that accrue to bearing responsibility in another context." Women found to have been afflicted by BWS have fared badly in child custody hearings, he notes. Based on interviews with battered women, experts in the field and prodigious research, Downs concludes that BWS-based defenses are unable to help women who kill in nonconfrontational situations. He suggests reforming the key standards, such as a more flexible standard for imminence along the lines of that used for kidnapping cases, in the law of self-defense. This reasonably accessible work takes the reader through a careful analysis of various syndromes, a legal critique of BWS, and examines the syndrome society from the vantage of political theory and citizenship. More than Victims is a good title in that the factors that surround battered women are many layered, complex, and challenge our systems of care. A battered woman is not once assaulted and then turns to the legal system that provides protection and assistance. Instead they enter an adversarial system that too often complicates the picture. They not only are left with post traumatic stress disorder, the batterer is usually a coercive controller that dominates finances, uses power games, and can use the court system against the victim. This adds a societal moral injury to the already victimized spouse. We need more works like More Than Victims bringing greater awareness of the layers of difficulties these women face. Congress gave us a gift in the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act that protects those with disabilities especially PTSD during legal proceedings. About the Author

Mark L. Knapp is the Jesse H. Jones Centennial Professor Emeritus and a Distinguished Teaching Professor Emeritus at the University of Texas at Austin. He was the editor of Human Communication Research (1980-83); an Eastern Communication Association Scholar (1982-83); an ICA Fellow (1980); and an NCA Distinguished Scholar. The Mark L. Knapp Award for career contributions to the study of interpersonal communication is awarded annually by the National Communication Association. He received teaching awards from two professional associations and four different universities. He was the President of ICA (1975-76); NCA (1989-90); the Association for Communication Administrators (1996-97); and the University of Texas chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi honor society (2001-03). He chaired the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Texas from 1989-1996 and 2000-2001. Four of his books are: NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION IN HUMAN INTERACTION; INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION AND HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS; LYING AND DECEPTION IN HUMAN INTERACTION and THE HANDBOOK OF INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION.

Amazing book!!!! Very informative and an interesting read for personal use.

The book was the correct book, however, it came in very poor condition. After I returned it I was charged the fu; price of the book stating it was returned in poor condition.

I have the paperback version of this excellent book, and wanted to be able to have it available as a reference during my travels. Much to my disappointment, this is not a Kindle book per se; instead, it is more like a PDF file. You cannot adjust the font (either style or size). You cannot highlight sections of the text. In sum, you cannot interact with this book the way you can with "true" Kindle books.I wish I could offer two separate ratings: one for content and one for format. If I could, I would give it a five-star rating for the former and a one-star rating for the latter. Since I don't have the option, I've opted for the middle of the road three-star rating.This format issue should be clearly noted on the Amazon page featuring this book.

Great text overall, but the chapters are not broken down and there are no key terms like a standard text. Reads like a standard book, not a textbook used for classes.
