A good reference book and when compared to several different versions of the NIV Bible, no problems or misquotes as far as I have found. But a very useful book when attempting to apply scripture to real life situations and making it relevant. When performing a search for a topic, the search results points you to the verse.When you go to the verse, the book and chapter is not readily displayed. You then have to go through several steps to locate the book and chapter that the verse is from. The content gets 5 stars. This kindle version is poorly executed.

The book acts as a good high level introduction to various significant sub-fields inside of computer vision. It is also one of the more up to date books (as of 2012) discussing more recent advances. However, because it is so high level and attempts to cover so much information, it is not a good book to try to learn from alone and provides no practical information on implementation details or problems. The best way to use the book, in my opinion, is to skim through it and learn the keywords to search for and use the references as a starting point. If you are a self learner like myself, one of the more frustrating problems is when you search for the wrong keywords and can't find the material.On the whole the writing quality is good in terms of clarity and insight. There are some spots that I felt that the book did little more than restate what was said by other authors of highly cited papers. While this is not always a bad thing, there were times that I disagreed with statements due to various practical considerations. Yes the original author was technically correct, but in the years since publication very few people actually do that since it's too computationally expensive or turned out to be less stable than advertised.The layout and organization of the book is well done and contains many full color pictures. For a new text book it is also very reasonably priced. I suspect that it would be more expensive to print the book's PDF out in color rather than buying it! I bought the book instead of just skimming through the older drafts (available online from the author's website) primarily because I prefer printed books and to support the authors publication approach.My rating is 4 stars based upon it being a high level introduction. As mentioned before, if you want a practical book that goes into how to implement all the techniques it discusses and issues that will arise, look elsewhere.

I'm returning to CV after a long absence, and this book is perfect for me. I've done three deep topic dives so far, and the book's coverage of each (with additional pointers into the literature) is spot on. The author has generously provided a PDF version online (search for the book title). Still, the physical version of the book is really nice, with large format pages on good paper. Since the book has already paid for itself in time savings, I'm happy to have made the purchase.

This book covers a lot of topics. It provides a brief explanation for each one, normally involving a lot of math, and occasionally an algorithm.Unfortunately, because the descriptions are so short and technical, nothing is ever really explained at an intuitive enough level to really grasp the concept. This part isn't great, but that seems to be pretty standard for most technical textbooks, and if you're using it for a course you generally have a teacher to explain the concept up front and then you can use the book to elaborate on it. Right?That's where this book fails. Not only does it not provide intuitive explanations, it doesn't cover any topic in enough depth to help with any written assignment or exam, and it fails completely to help with any programming assignments.It's a nice book - it's very well written and illustrated, it's just not that helpful. The one good part about it is that it does cover a very wide range of topics. Rather than taking notes externally I just wrote them down in the book in each of the appropriate sections - at least this way I can reference it again and get the intuition and depth I need from it.

A great introduction to Computer Vision, a nice review of the history of Computer Vision, and an enlightening survey of current and ongoing research.Richard Szeliski is a great teacher, at the top of his game, who gives motivation for the problems we may need to solve using Computer Vision.The algorithms are not provided as software code, but as descriptions with plenty of mathematical equations, references to papers, and copious diagrams and color photos.An enjoyable read, there is something for everyone interested in Computer Vision in this book. But although it is very broad, packing 700 textbook-sized pages with information, it does not always go very deep. And there is no source code. So you're on your own if you want to turn the discussed algorithms into working code. It's apparently intended to be used as a textbook, as there are questions at the end of each section. So reading each of the relevant papers and producing working software algorithms is left up to the reader.The example applications are motivating and there are a huge number of paper references (the footnotes section takes up 100 pages at the end of the book, just before the relatively-small 20-page index.)

For anyone looking for comprehensive coverage of all the fundamentals of computer vision, this is the book for you. The style of the book is that he gives you the general concept of a method and the required equations, and then provides you with the title of the paper it is sourced from (which are almost all available online as PDFs) in case you want more detail. Because of this approach, he has managed to fit into 800 pages what it could easily have taken 2000 to explain in fine detail.Don't take this as the book being too vague, because I have yet to need to refer to the papers to understand a concept (although it has been useful when I wanted more information into *how* the result was arrived at). It does help if you have a baseline understanding of how to do general operations on images (e.g. array manipulation in code) and whatnot, but a beginner could still use this book with a little more effort.There's no book that covers this breadth of information on computer vision, so I can't recommend it more highly.

I’d read the original version of this book quite a few years ago, then gave away the book. Recently, though, I heard Sam Harris speak about the book in his Waking Up iPhone app, so I decided to re-buy and re-read it. Here's my review, which is of this second edition of the book that contains a "Bringing the story up to date" section that was written over forty years after Harding wrote the first edition.My main problem with On Having No Head is the problem that I have with all books about personal spiritual breakthroughs or realizations. In the early days after I turned toward atheism, I was more interested in stories of how someone uncovered the Secret of the Universe. Now I’m much more skeptical about these sorts of stories. Why? Because I've got a better understanding of how the human mind works -- the result of both my own experiences with meditation, and a lot of reading about modern neuroscience and psychology. Here's a short version of what Harding experienced on a walk in the Himalayas, after he realized that he wasn't seeing his head (excerpt for a part of his nose).“It took me no time at all to notice that this nothing, this hole where a head should have been was no ordinary vacancy, no mere nothing. On the contrary, it was very much occupied. It was a vast emptiness vastly filled, a nothing that found room for everything - room for grass, trees, shadowy distant hills, and far above them snowpeaks like a row of angular clouds riding the blue sky. I had lost a head and gained a world…It was self-luminous reality for once swept clean of all obscuring mind. It was the revelation, at long last, of the perfectly obvious.”OK. I have no doubt that Harding had a breathtaking experience. But here's the thing: like he said, his revelation was of the perfectly obvious. Yesterday I jotted down a note about something Sam Harris said in lesson 28 of the guided meditations in his Waking Up course:“You're the space in which everything appears. Everything is already happening. All you are is consciousness and its contents.”These three sentences are pretty much the gist of Harding's book. They indeed are perfectly obvious. Everything in the world, or indeed the entire universe, the Himalayas included, has to appear in our consciousness if we are to be aware of it. How else would we know anything?But here's some facts about the human brain and mind (the mind is the brain in action, basically) that Harding doesn't address in On Having No Head, either because he wasn't aware of them, or chose not to mention them. 1. The brain has no feeling. This allows surgeons to operate on the brain while a patient is conscious. So we aren't aware of what our hundred billion or so brain cells are doing in the same way we feel our muscles contracting, our fingers touching something, or our stomach digesting a heavy meal. 
2. In the quotation above, and elsewhere in his book, Harding speaks of a "vast emptiness" of consciousness. This may be how it feels to us, but that isn't reality. When Harding looked at the view of the Himalayas, his brain was busily piecing together data from his optic nerves, integrating it with past memories/experiences, and presenting him with what he calls a "superb scene." Visual perception isn't a passive mirroring of the world. It involves a lot of brain activity. In the updated part of his book, Harding does speak about some neuroscientific truths: there is no evidence for an independent "self" within the brain/mind, nor does it appear that we humans possess free will, which seemingly would require the aforementioned self that doesn't exist. Here's what Harding says in his Bringing the Story Up to Date section about his final stage of "The Eight Stages of the Headless Way." It's called (8) The Breakthrough.“This amounts to a profound declaration of intent. It is the realization at gut level (so to say) that one's deepest desire is that all shall be as it is -- seeing that it all flows from one's true Nature, the Aware Space here. 
How is this breakthrough actually made? What can one do to bring it nearer?
In a sense, nothing. It's not a doing, but an undoing, a giving up, an abandonment of the false belief that there's anyone here to abandon. What else is there to do?
After all, one's initial in-seeing -- no matter how 'brief' and 'shallow' -- was already total self-surrender: everything here went: or rather, it was clear there's nothing here to go. It was the essential quantum leap from the fiction of egocentricity to the fact of zerocentricity. 
And for sure the faithful day-to-day seeing put in since then -- the seeing that already one is Nothing and Everything -- is a most valuable preparation for the discovery that at the deepest level one already wills Nothing and Everything.” 
Now, Harding goes on to talk about an unconditional surrender to God's will in which we welcome all that the world is bringing to us. But as noted above, his insight also can be framed as a realization that there is no self residing within our psyche, and there is no free will belonging to that nonexistent self.This is fully in accord with how Sam Harris understands the human brain/mind, which explains why Harris is a fan of Harding's book.

ON HAVING NO HEAD is a short, funny, and down to earth book—literally pointing at who we really are.It is simple without being at all simplistic. People with a non-dual background would likely find this book easy to understand.Direct Path inquiry uses direct experience exclusively, disregarding the thoughts that explain and interpret. From this perspective, no one has direct experience of actually having a head. That is Mr. Harding’s initial point, but it is not the essence of the message.Point at your head and there is nothing to be seen. This nothing is the space in which everything arises. In non-dual circles, this is not a new concept, though the approach (pointing at your head) most certainly is.I love his sense of humor—it is so very English.If you are open to different perspectives and approaches to the question “Who am I?” ON HAVING NO HEAD offers more than mere philosophy, it offers a refreshing view and a direct technique to apply this view.

A unique way of understanding ourselves with relationship to awareness of the world. Great for any spiritual seeker I gave it five stars because it is a very simple way of understanding ourselves.

As someone who has read spiritual, mystical and esoteric literature avidly for the past 10 years, I have to say this book is incredibly accessible. I've been studying the writings of Sri Ramana Maharshi intensively for the last 2 years, and Harding's book makes the same case for Being-Awareness right here, right now in such simple and clear prose. Thank you Douglas!

I like to meditate on Scripture before going to bed and this works equally as well. To mediate on a word and to learn it's meaning. "I muse over the Word and a fire burned." I'm getting to where I will read the meaning of a Word before I drive, and as I'm driving down the road, I just think on and meditate on its meaning. How peaceful and relaxing and fun! I wish I could express to the uninitiated the pure joy, love, and yes fun it is to muse over the Scriptures and its "true" meanings. To have commentaries such as this that can explain the very Words of God is powerfully and mysteriously exciting! We are made for God's glory so it's no surprise that pondering on His Words is exhilarating. If that's something you do not understand, you have yet to live. Folks who say the Bible is boring have yet to unleash its full power b/c this Word is made for ALL of us, so if you don't understand how exciting it is, you need to figure out what you're doing wrong, and understand what it means to truly love studying the Word of God!

The Vine's expository dictionary is a great and an important study tool. This is the Deluxe version. The difference between the Deluxe and the regular is the beautiful hardcover slip and the red ribbon marker. Now, about the content within, this is a great dictionary. I find myself reading through it often even when I'm not reading the WORD. The definitions aren't long in wordings compared to other Bible dictionaries namely: Thayer's Greek definitions or Zodhiates (which are good as well). Neither are the definitions short, but they are clear and to the point. With Scripture reference covering the Old Testament and the New Testament. Another aspect of this dictionary is that it gives the real Greek or Hebrew word written in front of the English word that is being defined also the (Strong) number, so it can be used easily with other (word study dictionaries).

This original edition of WE Vine's Expository Dictionary is one of the best ever made for serious Bible students and teachers.Like so many great books of earlier generations, the newer editions have been rendered less reliable by publishers and liberal mindededitors. In some instances in these books, entire paragraphs have been omitted or re-written to remove the actual meaning of the author's original work!Search for the best available older editions of these great classics. You can find them in the Used sections of Amazon and other used book sources. Look for the earlier (usually pre-1990's)and un-tampered editions of Strong's Concordance, WE Vines dictionary of New Testament Words, and Thessien's Lectures in Systematic Theology, the Interlinear Greek New Testament an other such foundational studies for pastors, teachers and students. With sales of the 'new editions' languashing, perhaps those who control the copyrights will eventually catch on to actually publish the original and reliable editions once again. Until them, shop the 'Used' sections.

A nice book to accompany my self-bible study. As we all know every translations and or interpretations claim that they are the most accurate or closest to the original manuscripts. In this regard allow me to humbly suggest to accompany the study of bible words with prayer to God to write His words in our hearts and minds and bestow on us the mind of God through His Holy Spirit.

This work in one volume combines Vine's New Testament Expository and the second is of Nelson's Old Testament Expository. It is a good reference for those of us who have no or minimal knowledge of Old Testament Hebrew or New Testament Greek. The Publisher aptly describes this work as, "...easy access to the alphabetized English equivalents of the Greek or Hebrew words from which they are translated."This hard cover expository dictionary includes definitions that expound on meanings by way of etymology, comments, cross referencing, history, technical data, and biblical scripture references. Additionally, an Index at the back provides an English transliteration from Hebrew or Greek to help find dictionary entries.The work also provides a Topical Index alphabetized in English. Strong's numbers used in his Exhaustive Concordance is effective going to Strong's, finding the word entry and comparing details of explanation with Vine's explanation, or, finding a word in Strong's and comparing the number as cited in Vine's to prove Vine and Strong are 'on the same page' and thus, so are you.A very good reference work.

Great resource for in-depth bible study. This edition contains both the old and new testament words and are keyed to Strong's numbers.

About the Author

I grew up in a middle class home in a family of six in the small, historic, town of Benicia, California. My father was health conscience before it became popular to be health conscience! He always insisted that we eat plenty of whole, natural foods and very few processed foods. My mom contributed to his philosophy by making homemade breads, cookies and desserts using healthy ingredients. When I had a family of my own, with four boys, I continued those traditions and added a few of my own. We built a log home in the Sierra foothills on a small piece of property where I was able to plant a few fruit trees and grow an organic, heirloom garden. I also canned, dehydrated or froze any excess produce to keep us supplied with wholesome food year round. Eventually, I added a dozen chickens - who were free to roam the backyard, eat grass and peck for bugs - that supplied us with fresh eggs. And, not long after that I began raising alpine dairy goats that kept us supplied with more than enough fresh, sweet milk for drinking and cooking. I often used the milk to make cheese, ice cream and cheese cake for family and friends as well. Along with that, I ordered all of our organic, whole grains in bulk from a natural-food co-op, Azure Standard, who delivered the food to our doorstep each month. By ordering through Azure Standard, I was able to save money and grind my own grains daily to make homemade breads, muffins, pies, cookies, etc. After my sons had grown and started families of their own, I continued my pursuit of eating healthy and began experimenting by using traditional methods of preparing grains such as sprouting, soaking and fermenting. I also switched from hybridized grains like wheat to ancient grains like spelt and einkorn. At one point, I even opened a cafe where I made all of my pancakes, cookies and desserts from scratch using freshly ground, organic grains, sucanat and real butter. Eventually, I decided that I wanted to pass all of my information, recipes and methods onto my sons and grand-children, so I began compiling this cookbook. After many more years, I decided to publish my cookbook and share it with others. Now, I hope that you will benefit from my journey in preparing nutritious foods as much as I have!

What I don't like about this book is the shoddy printing job. From the beginning to page 204, there is a strip about 1/4" wide about 3" above the bottom of the even pages that is blank. Looks like there was a flaw on the printing press that prevented text or graphics being printed in that area. From page 211, this flaw is found on the odd pages.This flaw is especially bad in the 2nd half because that's where the recipes are, and it means there are missing ingredients. Which essentially makes the recipe useless.I am VERY disappointed in this book. The information in the book can be very good, but if I have to guess at what a couple of lines say on most pages, it loses its effectiveness. To have spent so much and get a book with such shoddy printing that makes so many of the recipes unusable leaves a pretty bad taste in my mouth.

I have been off of all wheat products for about a year and had recently tried some einkorn pasta. That was great - had no problems with it and wanted to see if I could make some baked goods utilizing einkorn. After researching books on the subject I found this one - DO NOT SEARCH ANY FURTHER ... the book is outstanding and full of incredible information - waaaaaayyyyyy beyond what I expected. It is not only a cookbook to teach how to utilize these grains, it is a wealth of knowledge about grains, sprouting, oils, water, snacks, desserts, entrees and yes ...... even BEER .....

I was hoping for more recipes with eincorn wheat, but the book was so full of information that I feel that I got way more than I bargained for. I loved her stories and inserts. She packed so much info into this book, that it's like an encyclopedia. I believe that these grains will become more of our daily diet, and eincorn is the star of them all. I would say that this book is a must have for anyone who really cares about their health and diet.

Fantastic Reading! This is an excellant book for those who want to eat and stay healthy. The book has simple to follow instructions, no problems cooking delicious recipes. A must cook book to have in any Cook's Library. I also didn't experience any issues with the publishing of this book such as one the other reviewer stated.. Enjoyed it very much!

I really like this book. Its large with large print and very informative. Lots more to it then just recipes. It isn't just about ancient grains its about living the life. Good read.

Very informative. A nice easy to read reference.

This cookbook is extremely comprehensive and well-researched, and covers so much more than ancient grains. The author writes about many food issues we deal with in modern times, and you learn something on just about every page. She teaches you how you could take care of yourself and your family without relying on the "grid," and she makes you think without being judgmental or causing alarm. The recipes I have tried are delicious. It is a little long-winded now and then, but the author obviously has a lot of experience and knowledge, and writes as though she truly cares. I would highly recommend this book.
